Ever since the Star Wars prequel trilogy came to an end there’s been talk of a live action TV series set between the two trilogies. George Lucas worked on it for years, and it’s even been said there are over 100 scripts completed for the show.
However the problem has always been cost. While the fact Lucas owned effects masters ILM meant they could do it cheaper than virtually anyone else, the cost of putting a galaxy far, far away was still too much. However now the Disney has bought Lucasfilm, things may finally get going on the show.
Disney also owns US TV network ABC, which is the channel developing the Marvel S.H.I.E.L.D series, and it appears they’re already thinking about whether they can also bring Star Wars to television. “It’s definitely going to be part of the conversation,” ABC president Paul Lee tells EW. “We’d love to do something with Lucasfilm, although we’re not sure what yet.”
As that statement suggests, it’s very early on yet and no official talks have taken place, so it’s a long way from Star Wars actually coming to TV – and if it does, there’s no guarantee it’d be the same series Lucas was working on.
Lee adds, “It’s going to be very much up to Lucasfilm how they want to play it. We got to a very special point with Marvel, where we’re in the Marvel universe and very relevantly so. We’re not doing The Avengers, but SHIELD is part of The Avengers.” He hopes some sort of similar arrangement can be worked out for Star Wars.
Don’t expect this to happen anytime soon, but it’s good to hear a live action Star Wars TV show is still in the mix.
