It may be 12 years since Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon hits cinemas, but despite the time delay it’s been announced that The Weinstein Company is backing a sequel to the 2000 wushu blockbuster, with production tentatively scheduled to begin in May, according to Deadline.
Ronny Yu is in talks to direct from a screenplay provided by John Fusco (Young Guns, Hidalgo). Here’s what the writer had to say about the project, based on the popular Chinese fiction series Wu Sia, “This was an opportunity to explore a lifelong passion I’ve had for Wu Sia, and if there wasn’t continuing source material, I would never have gotten involved.”
The script is based on Silver Vase, Iron Knight, the fifth book in the Crane-Iron Pentalogy by Wang Du Lu. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was based on the fourth book in the series. Silver Vase, Iron Knight follows the Yu Shu Lien character portrayed by Michelle Yeoh in the original.
It isn’t clear which Crouching Tiger stars, if any, will reprise their roles for this follow-up.
Director Ang Lee will not be a part of the project, and many will be concerned about a sequel helmed by Yu, who’s now best known for directing the likes of Bride Of Chucky and Freddy Vs. Jason, but the Hong Kong native did started out making action films in his own country, so he knows how it works.
