Indie filmmakers are having to be ever more innovative about getting their films made and out to people. Crowd-funding is becoming increasingly popular, but even there it’s sometimes a good idea to think outside the box.
Gay actor Craig Daniel Adams and his partner Bruno Collins have launched an IndieGoGo campaign not to fund their actual movie, Four:Play, but to raise cash for four ‘vignette’ short films that will introduce the characters and themes of the rom-com.
The eventual movie, which is written by Adams and directed by Colloins, is described as a ‘Romantic Comedy which centres round two couples, Michael (David Paisley) & Jay (Arron Blake), and Leo (David Ames) & Sam (Craig Daniel Adams). The film takes place the evening before and morning of the former couple’s Wedding. Both couples wake up, hungover and questioning whether or not they have had a foursome, the previous night. The film then goes on to discuss the importance of trust, love and family in a modern relationship, all whilst our boys are subjected to crazy mothers, overly accepting fathers and bitchy best friends – with a little Viagra problem thrown in for good measure!’
The vignettes introduce the characters. The first features Leo & Sam in an online magazine video feature/interview about young love. The Second has Michael & Jay in a glossy magazine style interview about their upcoming nuptials, while in the third we are introduced to Albin (Darren Lee Murphy), as he attempts to film an online dating video.
Interestingly all of the main male actors are openly gay, something that doesn’t often happen, even in LGBT movies. The filmmakers didn’t set out to ensure that happened – it’s just the way it turned out! Sugar Rush actress Olivia Hallinan has also recently joined the cast of the vignettes.
The filmmakers have reached their initial £2,000 funding target, but are hoping for more to ensure these shorts are the best they can be. The campaign ends of May 27th, and then the vignettes will shoot on the 18th, 19th and 25th of May.
Hopefully the shorts will be a success and we’ll get to see the full film sometime relatively soon.
