The idea of adapting the videogame franchise Uncharted has been doing the rounds of Hollywood for a long time, with the likes of David O. Russell and Neil Burger coming and going from the director’s chair. However now a new director may be able get things back on track, as Deadline reports Horrible Bosses helmer Seth Gordon is in negotiations to direct.
The most recent draft of the screenplay was written by David Guggenheim. The studio liked it so much they’ve also hired him to write the action sequel Bad Boys 3. The likes of Cormac Wibberley, Marianne Wibberley, Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer have previously worked on the screenplay.
The Uncharted videogame follows a descendent of Sir Francis Drake, Nate Drake, a treasure hunter who thinks he has learned the whereabouts of El Dorado, the fabled golden city. As well as having to battle competing treasure seekers, he also has to do battle with mutated descendants of Spaniards and Nazis, who want to stop Nate getting to his goal. As the game was designed to feel like an Indiana Jones style big summer movie, it’s unsurprising Hollywood is thinks a film version might be a success.
No cast is currently attached (mark Wahlberg was previously attached but he’s no longer involved) but the studio hopes to start production sometime this year.
