Those interested in film theory will know there’s often talk of most film being shot from a male point of view, but it’s sometimes difficult to truly understand how far that extends (except with extreme examples such as the way Michael Bay shoots women) as it’s so common it just seems to be the way things are.
That’s what’s so interesting about this new video Buzzfeed came up with, which swaps the male and female roles around in movies such as Wild Things, Twilight, Basic Instinct and Titanic. It’s a great way to show how cinema views men and women differently in most situations, and how there’s a presumption of a straight male viewer.
That’s very true of Wild Things, where in the original a lesbian tryst is very blatantly presented as being for the voyeuristic pleasure of straight men, but you change it to two guys making out, and how we view both the men and the watching woman changes completely.
And while I’m sure straight guys might be a bit uncomfortable with the naked painting scene in Titanic with the guy in the nude – personally I’m all for it (and yes, I know that makes me a bad person).
Take a look above and see what you think.
