Natalie Portman is going to to old west, as THR reports that she’s attached to star in and produce the Jane Got a Gun for director Lynne Ramsay (We Need to Talk About Kevin). And just having Ramsay involved suggests this won’t be your average western.
The project is about a woman who must defend her farm from her outlaw husband’s gang, after he manages to return home, clinging to life after a gunfight. The wife seeks the help of an ex-lover when the gang shows up on their land.
Brian Duffield wrote the screenplay, which landed on The Black List of the best unproduced screenplays and has sparked a bidding war at Cannes between financiers, foreign sales agents, and studios. The project may end up being funded by a combination of studio funds, private equity firms, and foreign pre-sale deals.
