The Oscars may be getting a little bit more musical this year, as the openly gay duo, Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, has signed up to produce the show. They’re no stranger to a little bit of camp, having produced movie musicals like Hairspray and Chicago, the recent remake of Footloose, as well as TV’s Smash. On the Broadway stage they’ve produced the likes of the successful restaging of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.
‘We are very excited to collaborate with Hawk [Koch, President of AMPAS] and everyone at the Academy to produce this year’s Oscars,’ Zadan and Meron said in a joint statement. ‘We hope to utilize our experience in producing features, TV and theater to bring something fresh and special to this incredible awards show.
‘When we filmed The Bucket List, we made our own personal bucket list, and producing the Oscars was #1. It’s truly a great honor.’
GLAAD has welcomed the duo’s appointment, with the group’s President Herndon Graddick saying, ‘For decades, Craig Zadan and Neil Meron have been fearless in bringing powerful and entertaining stories to screens, and will undoubtedly bring that same level of passion and skill for storytelling to the Oscars.’
We’ll be able to see what the duo bring us with their Oscar extravaganza on February 24, 2013. They say there are already a few people in mind to host, and they’re also thinking of bringing back musical numbers.
