A couple of years ago there was a lot of talk about a remake of Escape From New York, which even got as far as a fairly detailed plot synopsis and concept art being released, with Gerard Butler, Tom Hardy, and Jeremy Renner circling the Snake Plissken and Breck Eisner directing. However the movie fell apart of budget and script problems, but now Joel Silver is starting over as he still thinks it’s a good idea to remake the John Carpenter movie (although many other would disagree).
EW reports that Silver is teaming up with Studiocanal for the film, which will give an entirely new take on the plot. There’s little info on exactly what that new take is, although it’s said it feature origin elements looking at what happened before Escape From New York, and is being developed with a trilogy in mind.
The original starred Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken, a one-eyed convict in a future where New York has been turned into a maximum-security prison for the most dangerous criminals. Snake is tasked with rescuing the President of the United States (Donald Pleasence), who is being held captive by a dangerous inmate (Isaac Hayes) after his plane crashes into the city.
The remake is currently at a fairly early stage, so don’t expect to see it anytime soon.
