When Neon Trees lead singer Tyler Glenn came out earlier this year, he joined the ranks of openly gay people who grew up in the Mormon faith. Now he wants to help share the stories of people like him, as he’s teamed up with fellow gay Mormon Kendall Wilcox to launch a Kickstarter to help fund a documentary called Far Between.
They hope that, ‘With your donations we will tell the definitive story of what it means to be LGBT and Mormon and why it matters to the American experience today.’
Wilcox has collected over 200 interviews in the hope that Far Between can start changing the way people talk about LGBT issues and the The Church Of Jesus Christ Of The Latter Day Saints. The popular perception is that gay Mormons either voluntarily turn their back on the faith completely or are forcibly kicked out. While this is true for many, there are also plenty of shades of grey, including those who still follow the precepts of the faith but outside the main arms of the church.
The interviewees include Glenn, who remains proud to be a Mormon, but faced a difficult journey accepting his sexuality and how to reconcile it with his faith. You can see what Tyler has to say below, along with a fundraising video, below.
Although the documentary is close to its initial $50,000 goal, that’s just the bare bones Far Between needs to finish the film. It is hoping that over the next few days it can raise even more to ensure the film can be the very best it can be. If you want to help out, head over to Kickstarter.
