The documentary Corpus Christi, first debuted at film festivals back in 2012. It’s taken a while but now a US DVD and VoD release has been set, with Breaking Glass Pictures bringing it out on October 14th.
To give us a taste, a new trailer has been released, which you can watch below.
At the core of the documentary is an LA staging of Terrence McNally’s 1998 play Corpus Christi. Pretty much every production of the play has proved controversial, as it depicts Jesus and his disciples as gay men, Christ performing a same-sex marriage, and Judas betraying him due to romantic jealousy. It’s original Broadway production was met with protests and it’s been pretty much the same wherever it’s been staged, becoming a major target in the ever intensifying culture wars of homosexuality.
The LA staging wasn’t without its controversies either, but it led to a US tour and eventually headed to Corpus Christi, Texas, which doesn’t just share a name with the play, but is also McNally’s hometown. The film also looks at the protests and reactions against it, comparing the play’s message of universal love to the blind bigotry it’s been met with.
