Perhaps the most memorable moment of the Oscar ceremony was when a nicely buff Neil Patrick Harris re-enaced a scene from Birdman, stripping down to his underwear, wandering around backstage before appearing in a state of undress in front of the star-packed audience.
However from the moment it happened there were some wondering if he’d had some padding assistance, as he certainly didn’t seem lacking in the crotch department.
It hasn’t taken long though for Neil to step forward and defend his package, telling Live! With Kelly and Michael about how that skit came to happen. He said, “No enhancements, but I’ll tell you what happened. They always want you to be in funny costumes as the host… I’m not one for crazy costumes. I don’t love it, but the Birdman bit seemed funny, and so we thought it’d be a fun thing to do, and it seemed appropriate at the time.
“So we did the dress rehearsal, and I just had the pair of regular underwear on,” he continued. “But the lights! They see through things! So the Academy or the network or someone said we had to do something so you couldn’t tell my religion. So what they did was they had to take a second pair and sew it to the first to make it so that you couldn’t sort of see through it.
“But, no sock!”
So I suppose it was sort of padded, but not in the way we might expect. And for those still thinking there might have been a sock down there, you just have to remember that if you’re as skinny as NPH, it’s not too surprising it sticks out more.
