There’s been increasingly grumblings about how relentlessly straight the world of movies superheroes are – which take place in a universe where not even minor characters are LGBT. While things have been a little better on TV (in shows such as Arrow and Agents Of SHIELD), none of the central characters have been gay.
Now though, Warner/DC is planning to release an animated series via CW Seed, which will centre around a gay character – Freedom Fighters: The Ray. The trailer, released around the time of Comic Con, passed up by when it first released, but we thought we’d post it now after being tipped off by Instinct.
The central character in the show is Ray Terrill, a reporter who discovered a group of government scientists working on a secret project to turn light into a weapon of mass destruction. Before he could report on his findings, the project head exposed Ray to a “genetic light bomb.” The bomb failed to kill him and instead gifted Ray with light-based powers. With these abilities, Ray realised he could go beyond reporting on injustice – he could take action to help stop it.
However, things are slightly turned on their head compared to other shows set in the Arrowverse, is it takes place in a parallel universe where the Nazis won World War II. The result is that in that world, the likes of Green Arrow, Flash, and Supergirl help prop up the Reich, while The Ray and his friends Black Condor, Red Tornado and other fight for freedom.
Take a look at the trailer below. The show debuts on the CW Seed streaming service in the US this Autumn.
