While conventional thinking suggested stop-motion animation was pretty doomed after CG movie took off, Ardman and a new company called Laika have battled against that idea and proved it still has a place on cinema screens. Laika worked on Corpse Bride, Coraline and the upcoming ParaNorman, and now Variety reports they’re working on a movie version of Philip Reeve’s book Goblins.
The animation director from Fantastic Mr Fox, Mark Gustafson, will helm the film, although it sounds like it’s farily early days as no voice cast has been revealed.
Here’s the synopsis of the book, ‘This is a wild world of magical creatures and heroic adventure from the extraordinary imagination of Philip Reeve. The squabbling goblins who live in the great towers of Clovenstone spend their time fighting and looting. Only clever young Skarper understands that dark magic created by a vanquished sorcerer is rising again. From the lands of men come fortune-seekers – and trolls, giants, cloud-midens, boglins, swamp monsters, tree-warriors and bloodthirsty goblins are swept into a fabulous magical conflict to thrill all fantasy fans.’
