George Clooney Plans Smothers Brothers Pic

December 12, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

The Smothers Brothers have never really penetrated over to this side of the pond, but their comedy antics in the 60s have made them legends in the US. Now Deadline reports that George Clooney wants to make a movie about them. It actually fits his style more than you might think, as the brothers’ story has a political edge.

Clooney and his production parter, Grant Heslov, have acquired the rights to David Bianculli’s book, Dangerously Funny: The Uncensored Story Of The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, for a biopic about the infamous comedy duo. Brian Hecker and Craig Sherman hwill write the script, which will follow brothers and 60s comedians Tom and Dicky Smothers, who went from family-friendly merrymakers to counterculture rabble-rousers. They were the first to introduce hippie ideals into the mainstream, and their act eventually got them on Richard Nixon’s enemy list, which saw their popular CBS variety show being canceled.

At the moment Clooney is only down to produce, but it’s believed he’s eyeing the movie as a directing project.

Not only will Tom Smothers and Dicky Smothers need to be cast, but actors will also be needed to portray a young Steve Martin and a young Rob Reiner, who were both writers for The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour .

Guy Ritchie May Direct Man From UNCLE

December 9, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

After Steven Soderbergh dropped out of directing The Man From UNCLE a couple of weeks ago, it seemed that with difficulty finding a star and the helmer dropping out, the whole project was in jeopardy. However Warner Bros is sticking with it, as Deadline reports Sherlock Holmes director Guy Ritchie has signed on to produce the movie alongside his partner Lionel Wigram. Ritchie is apparently eyeing it as a directing project, but that hasn’t been confirmed yet.

The film is adapted from The Man from UNCLE TV series that ran from 1964 to 1968. The show followed the United Network Command for Law Enforcement (U.N.C.L.E.), which protected Earth from the evil organization Technological Hierarchy for the Removal of Undesirables and the Subjugation of Humanity (THRUSH). Soderbergh was keen to keep the 60s setting, but it isn’t known if that will change with Ritchie.

With production unlikely to to happen for a few months at least (Soderbergh planned to shoot in January), there’s the possibility George Clooney may come back onboard, as he only dropped out because his back surgery clashed with filming.

See Brad Pitt, Jessica Chastain & More Take On Cinematic Villains

December 8, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Every year around awards season, the New York Times uses its muscle to get a bunch of top actors to dress up and pose for unsual pictures, all related to a different theme. This year’s theme is ‘Touch Of Evil’ and it sees everyone from Brad Pitt to George Clooney taking part, dressed up as some of cinema’s greatest villainous archetypes.

We’ve gathered together some of the images below, but you can get a better look over at the NYTimes site, along with videos of the stars, which sadly aren’t embeddable. It’s incredible how they get all these people to take part, and it makes for some great shots.

Channing Tatum To Be Man From UNCLE?

November 15, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Another day, another person rumoured to be be replacing George Clooney in Steven Soderbergh’s planned Man From UNCLE movie. According to Deadline, after rumours emerged recently about Bradley Cooper and Ryan Gosling, the director is now eyeing Channing Tatum to star in the movie.

Tatum hasn’t officially been offered the role yet, but the director and actor having just been working together on the film Magic Mike, so they already have a relationship to build on.

Interestingly, Deadline also give the reason Clooney dropped out. Many were surprised George bailed as he’d been involved with the film for years (he was the one who brought Soderbergh on board), but  apparently it’s because he’s due to have surgery and wouldn’t have be able to handle the stunt work.

The 60s TV show the film is based on revolves around two agents for the United Network Command for Law and Enforcement (U.N.C.L.E) – Napoleon Solo and his Russian counterpart, Illya Kuryakin, who are committed to saving the world from the evil forces of the Technological Hierarchy for the Removal of Undesirables and the Subjugation of Humanity (T.H.R.U.S.H.). They were played by Robert Vaughn and David McCallum in the original show.

Scott Z. Burns (World War Z) is on scripting duties, with Soderbergh keen to keep the classic 60s setting of the TV show. The movie is expected to go into production early next year, so they need to find actors for the two main roles pretty soon.
