Taylor Swift, Jennifer Hudson, James Corden & Ian McKellen In Talks For Cats

July 22, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

For a very long time there’s been talk about turning Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats into a movie. For various reasons – not least that despite its massive stage success it’s a very odd show, with very little plot and a far greater reliance on dance than mainstream cinema is often comfortable with. However, now it’s moving forward thanks to Tom Hooper (Les Miserables, The King’s Speech) coming on board to direct.

Now it’s starting to fill out the cast, with Taylor Swift, Jennifer Hudson, James Corden, and Ian McKellen all set to star, according to THR. They will all be members of the ‘jellicles’ a group of cats preparing for a ball where they will decide which of them will be given a new life. Hudson will play Grizabella (singer of the show’s most famous song, Memory), McKellan will be Old Deuteronomy, while Swift is likely to play the flirtatious Bombalurina. It’s not clear who Corden will be.

The current plan is for Hooper to shoot the live-action movie (rather than an animated film that often seemed to be Hollywood’s preferred option for Cats) in the UK later this year, with a script by Lee Hall (Billy Elliot). It should be in cinemas next year.

Ian McKellen Will Be The Good Liar Alongside Helen Mirren

March 13, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ian McKellen has had a long and successful professional relationship with director Bill Condon, which has include Gods and Monsters (for which McKellen received his first Oscar nomination) and the more recent Mr. Holmes. The duo are now planning to get back together for an adaptation of Nicholas Searle’s novel, The Good Liar. Helen Mirren is also onboard as the other main lead, according to Deadline.

Searle’s novel is about, ‘career con artist Roy Courtnay (McKellen), who can hardly believe his luck when he meets well-to-do widow Betty McLeish (Mirren) online. As Betty opens her home and life to him, Roy is surprised to find himself caring about her, turning what should be a cut-and-dry swindle into the most treacherous tightrope walk of his life.’

Jeffrey Hatcher wrote the script for the movie, which should shoot later this year. There’s no news on when it might arrive in cinemas.

Ian McKellen Is Planning A Series Of LGBT Heroes Short Films & He’s Looking For Help

June 24, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ian McKellen has got a new project. Alongside with Vicious producer Gary Reich and The Brooklyn Brothers agency founder Jackie Stevenson, he is planning a series of four short films – under the banner LGBT Heroes – made by and about the LGBT community. THR reports that they’re hoping to get top notch filmmakers and actors involved in the initiative.

While Facebook has already stepped forward to partner with the film series and stream the first movie, McKellen is looking for other brands and broadcasters to help with some of the other films. The actor has previously resisted working with brands in his career, saying of Coca-Cola’s Dasani water’s attempt to recruit him for its British launch, he says, “I thought, ‘I can’t. I feel I’m selling my soul, and my soul is worth more than this.'”

However, he thinks it makes sense for this project, partly because of how brands have been supporting the LGBT community. “I’ve been impressed with gay rights all over the world, how much commerce wants to be involved,” McKellen says, “Hollywood, to crudely sum it up, has tended to deal with fantasy, tended to deal with escape. Branding has to be up to date otherwise. [Brands] come up with a response to the world as it really is. It’s a much different approach to anything that Hollywood would do.”

They are hoping to get directors Wachowskis and Tom Ford to direct two of the four films, while McKellen will appear on at least one of them, with other currently unknown actors also attached.

Those behind the project want those interested in getting involved – including brands, actors, broadcasters and anyone else with ideas – to contact them via LGBTheroes.info.

Gay Short Film Showcase: Ian McKellen Looks Back On Growing Up When Being Gay Was Illegal

April 8, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There are events marking 50 years since the decriminalisation of most gay sex (in private) in England And Wales going on up and down the UK this year. One of the most prominent is a major exhibition at Tate Britain, Queer British Art 1861-1967, which runs from April 5th to October 1st 2017.

To go alongside that, Random Acts has partnered with Tate to present six films in response to Queer British Art. These provide glimpses into LGBTQ lives through intimate portraits of six individuals. The films use differing styles of storytelling, with each queer filmmaker bringing their own creative approach.

The first of those has now been released online, and in it ‘Scott Chambers gives an emotional performance evoking the feelings of a young Ian McKellen, as the acclaimed actor narrates his account of growing up in a time when there was no possibility of being out as a young gay man.’

It’s a short and moving look at what it must have been like to realise you are gay at a time when it wasn’t just stigmatised but when expressing it was actually illegal. Take a look at the short film below. [Read more…]

Hating Peter Tatchell Documentary Seeks Funds To Take A Look At The Gay Rights Activist

October 4, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

peter-tatchell-ian-mckellenNo other British gay rights activist is as well known as Peter Tatchell, who for several decades has been an extremely prominent voice speaking out for gay equality and other human rights issues. However, part of the reason he’s so well known is because of what a controversial figure he’s been, with his forthright opinions and direct action upsetting as many people as it inspired.

That’s been true inside the gay community too, with Tatchell at times being voting by other gay people as amongst their most hated figures (partly because the media often portrayed him as the voice of the entire UK gay community, even though many disagreed with both his opinions and his tactics). However, he undoubtedly gave voice to gay rights issues in ways few others managed, raising awareness along the way.

Now a documentary, Hating Peter Tatchell, plans to take a look at the man and his life, with narration from the inimitable Sir Ian McKellen. To do so it’s launched a Kickstarter, hoping to raise £10,000.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Filmmaker Chris Amos discovers why Peter Tatchell for decades a public hate figure, is still being targeted by hate campaigns and smears by the far right and far left. Over the past decade, Peter has gone from being one of the most despised public figures in Britain to one of the most loved. His unique brand of human rights activism has brought him media and public scrutiny.

‘Hating Peter Tatchell charts his 50 years of human rights activism and the immense personal price he has paid: the hate mail, death threats and violent assaults – with the latter resulting in brain and eye damage. This film documents his triumphs and tribulations which have impacted British politics and the politics of other countries as far reaching as Russia, Zimbabwe and South Africa.

‘It includes challenges to, and encounters with, Tony Blair, Robert Mugabe, Mike Tyson, the African National Congress leadership and successive Archbishops of Canterbury. This is a true story of overcoming adversity and of incredible personal achievement: how one man can bring marginal human rights issues into the mainstream to create positive change.’

Take a look at the fundraising video and trailer below, and if you’d like to help, head over to Kickstarter. [Read more…]

Ian McKellen Says He Thinks ‘Gay Men Are More Masculine Than Straight Men’

September 4, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ian-mckellenThere’s a lot of talk about the intersection of masculinity/femininity and sexuality, with many still feeling male homosexuality as being feminine, and even some gay people feeling that bottoms are less masculine, or that they must put comments about the need for masculinity on their gay dating profile. Now Ian McKellen has stepped into the debate, suggesting he thinks that gay men are more masculine than their straight counterparts.

After all – it involves two men, so is that more masculine that having a man and a woman?

In an interview with The Evening Standard featuring McKellen and his BFF Patrick Stewart, Ian says, “I’ve probably played even more military men than Patrick. Gandalf is a soldier, Magneto is a soldier, Richard III, Coriolanus, Macbeth. And I think the reason is because I want my revenge on them all…The people who start wars, perpetuate them and glory in them. ‘God save our gracious Queen, send her victorious?’ I’m sorry. What does that mean?… If that’s what masculinity is then I don’t want any part of it at all.”

McKellen then adds, “I think gay men are more masculine than straight men. Because, guess what? They love other men!…So when bully boys say: ‘Faggot!’ you say, ‘That’s right, I’m with the boys.’”

It’s not a comment that academics will be using in years to come as a profound statement on gender theory, but he’s sort of got a point, even if it ignores a lot of the issues.

Ian McKellen Suggests Oscars Diversity Problem Also Extends To Gays & Women

January 25, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ian-mckellenIn the last couple of weeks there’s unsurprisingly been a lot of anger and frustration at the fact that out of 20 acting nominees in this year’s Oscar, no people of color are represented (mirroring what happened last year), and the likes of Straight Outta Compton and other films concentrating on non-white characters were completely shut out. However, Ian McKellen has stepped forward to suggest that the problems with diversity at the Oscars don’t just extend to people of color, but also affect women and gay people too.

In a new interview with Sky News, McKellen says, “The Oscars have a very special place in the lives of American actors, even more so than here. As a representative of the industry they are in, the film industry is receiving complaints that I fully sympathise with.”

“It’s not only black people who have been disregarded by the film industry, it used to be women and certainly gay people to this day. These are all legitimate complaints, and the Oscars is the focus of these complaints at the moment.”

He certainly has a point, with only one female having ever won the Best Director gong, and few ever being nominated. No openly gay actor has ever won an Oscar either (although admittedly a decent amount have been nominated for playing gay characters).

However while the focus has been on the Oscars themselves and the diversity issues of the Academy’s membership (they are predominantly white males, with an average age of 62), to a large extent it is symptomatic of Hollywood itself. While some black (male) actors have become huge stars, most still face severe limits on the type and number of roles they’re offered. Similarly female actors are often trapped in stereotyped supporting roles in the biggest films, while openly gay people are often seen as too much of a commercial risk (particularly in regards to how they might affect box office in everywhere from homophobic countries to the American Mid-West) meaning they rarely get offered genuinely massive roles.

It often seems to be two steps forwards one step back in Hollywood, as for a supposedly liberal industry, it’s incredibly conservative both in terms of what it thinks will be commercial and what it will take a ‘risk’ on, which makes it an uphill battle to ensure proper Hollywood diversity.

Mr. Holmes (DVD Review)

October 25, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Ian McKellen, Laura Linney, Milo Parker, Hiroyuki Sanada
Director: Bill Condon
Running Time: 104 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: October 26th 2015 (UK)

You’d be forgiven for thinking that a movie about an aging Sherlock Holmes would be about the famed detective back on the case solving a murder and recapturing his glory days, but Mr. Holmes is something slightly different.

Holmes (Ian McKellen) is in his 90s, living in a remote cottage after leaving his illustrious career behind 35 years before. His main company is his cook/housekeeper, Mrs. Munro (Laura Linney), her son Roger (Milo Parker) and the bees that he keeps. He’s not trying to recapture his glory days, he just wants to be able to properly remember them, as creeping senility keeps making him to forget things, including what really happened on his final case.

He knows that the ending to the tale isn’t what Watson wrote in his successful books about Sherlock, but he’s having trouble remembering exactly what it was that led him to leave his former life behind. [Read more…]

Ian McKellen Encourages Gay Actors To Come Out, As The Closet Is ‘A Really Nasty Place To Live’

October 22, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ian-mckellenWhile it’s traditionally thought that actors are either going to make it in the movies when they’re young or not at all, it certainly wasn’t true for Ian McKellen, who as a young actor gained an impressive reputation on the stage but didn’t get many film roles.

Then, in 1998 in response to Maggie Thatcher’s anti-gay policies, he came out, which many at the time thought was career suicide. However as he points out on a new THR podcast, the opposite was true and he started scoring great movie role, something he partially credits to coming out helping improve his acting skills, aiding his versatility..

“It all happened after coming out,” he says. “I had no idea this silly thing was a weight on my shoulders.”

“That’s my message to anyone in this town who thinks ‘I’ve got to stay in the closet to be successful in films’. I didn’t.”

He also has a message for the current crop of actors worried about coming out, saying, “Do you want to be a famous movie star who has love scenes with ladies and in private be an unhappy gay? There’s no choice. Forget the career, dear. Go and do something else … A closet’s a really nasty place to live, you know? It’s dirty, it’s dusty, it’s full of skeletons. You don’t want it. Open that door — fling it wide and be yourself.”

The quick look at his IMDB [age shows that he really did see an explosion in his screen credits after coming out, and he has since scored two Oscar nominations and become one of the most beloved septuagenarians on the planet, thanks to the likes of X-Men and Lord Of The Rings – all while being out, proud and never afraid to talk about his sexuality.
