Frank (DVD Review)

September 13, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Michael Fassbender, Domhnall Gleeson, Maggie Gyllenhaal
Director: Lenny Abrahamson
Running Time: 95 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: September 15th 2014 (UK)

Michael Fassbender is a top actor who can have his choice of roles, so it initially seemed bizarre that he wanted to make a movie where he spends the vast majority of the runtime with a giant papier-mâché head covering his face. However as I watched more of the movie, I began to realise what an interesting role it must have seemed from his perspective.

For a start it means he has to create a performance and a character with just his body and voice, something he does an extremely good job of. It’s also gives him a chance to play a surprisingly interesting person as it begins to reveal more and more about the man inside the head. [Read more…]

First Pics Of Channing Tatum In White House Down Arrive

November 6, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The battle of the rival movies about the White House being taken over by terrorisst has started, with the first images from White House Down arriving via EW (and scanned by the fine folks at HeyUGuys).

Roland Emmerich directs the film, which is about a young Secret Service agent (Channing Tatum) who gets put to the ultimate test when a paramilitary group invades the White House and takes everyone hostage. Jamie Foxx, James Woods and Maggie Gyllenhaal also star.

The film will be going up against Olympus Has Fallen, which has a broadly similar plot, but has Antoine Fuqua directing, with Gerard Butler and Morgan Freeman starring. That movie is trying to get a jump on White House Down, with a spring release, while Emmerich’s movie hits US cinemas in June and is currently scheduled to hit the UK in September.

Maggie Gyllenhaal Circles White House Down

June 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Sony’s plans to get White House Down into production as quickly as possible continue apace, as just yesterday we reported Jamie Foxx was in talks to join Channing Tatum in the movie, and now Maggie Gyllenhaal has joined the steadily growing cast of director Roland Emmerich’s film.

The movie is about a paramilitary group that takes the White House hostage. Jamie Foxx is in talks to play the President, while Channing Tatum is portraying a Secret Service agent who tries to stop the takeover. Maggie Gyllenhaal will play another Secret Service agent, who is assigned to protect the President.

Roland Emmerich is directing from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt (The Amazing Spider-Man). It’s believed it will shoot later this summer. (Source: Deadline)

New Hysteria Trailer – Maggie Gyllenhaal helps invent the vibrator

April 16, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The complicated sexual mores of the Victorians have always been of interest to slightly prurient tastes, and Hysteria gives a bit of a comic look at the odd contradictions of the time. Here’s the synopsis: ‘Maggie Gyllenhaal and Hugh Dancy star in this cheeky romantic comedy about the invention of the vibrator. Victorian London is brought to life in vivid colour as a young doctor (Dancy) struggles to establish himself while confronting the gutsy daughter of his boss (Gyllenhaal). Rupert Everett and Felicity Jones play supporting roles.’ The vibrator was originally developed to help treat ‘female hysteria’ (believe it or not, back then many doctors manually stimulated ladies to orgasm, which was viewed as a purely medical practice to treat nervous conditions, and not sexual at all). No UK release date is currently set.
