The Miseducation of Cameron Post Trailer – Chloe Moretz is sent to a gay conversion camp

July 10, 2018 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Gay conversion is in the sights of the film industry this year, with two high profile movie’s about the controversial and much reviled practice due to arrive. One is Boy Erased, Joel Edgerton’s movie based on Garrard Conley’s memoir about how he was sent to a gay conversion camp as a teen. The other is the Sundance Grand Jury Prize award-winning The Miseducation of Cameron Post, which has released it’s first trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Based on the celebrated novel by Emily M. Danforth, The Miseducation of Cameron Post follows the titular character (Chloë Grace Moretz) as she is sent to a gay conversion therapy center after getting caught having sex with the prom queen. Run by the strict Dr. Lydia Marsh (Jennifer Ehle) and her brother, Reverend Rick (John Gallagher Jr.) — himself an example of how those in the program can be “cured” — the center is populated by teens “struggling with same-sex attraction.” In the face of outlandish discipline, dubious methods, and earnest Christian rock songs, Cameron forms an unlikely gay community, including the amputee stoner Jane (Sasha Lane) and the Lakota Two-Spirit, Adam (Forrest Goodluck). In creating a family on her own terms, she learns what it means to empower herself and have confidence in her identity.’

Desiree Akhavan (Appropriate Behaviour) directs the movie, which is due out in New York on August 3rd and Los Angeles on August 10th. It’ll be out in the UK on August 31st. Take a look at the new trailer below. [Read more…]

Gay Conversion Movie The Miseducation Of Cameron Post Wins Sundance’s Top Awards

January 28, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

One of the best reviewed movies coming out of this year’s Sundance Film Festival is undoubtedly The Miseducation Of Cameron Post, and last night it picked yp the festival’s top award, the Grand Jury Prize. Set in 1993, the film stars Chloe Moretz as a teenager who ‘is caught having a sexual encounter with the prom queen. Cameron is then forced into a gay conversion therapy center by her conservative aunt and uncle, who are her legal guardians.’

Accepting the award, Moretz said, “On behalf of the entire ‘Cameron Post’ team we want to dedicate this to the LGBTQ survivors of sexual conversion therapy. We just wanted to make this movie to shine a light onto the fact that it is only illegal in nine states out of the 50 states in this country to practice sexual conversion therapy.”

Directed and co-written by Desiree Akhavan (director of the excellent Appropriate Behaviour), the film has been praised for its depiction of gay conversion, while ensuring the script is peppered with biting humour and a real interesting in understanding even the characters doing the ‘converting’. The film, which also stars Jennifer Ehle, John Gallagher Jr. and Quinn Shephard, doesn’t have a release date yet, but should be in cinemas later this year.

Moretz is well known for her support of LGBTQ issues, which partially stems from her having two gay brothers.

Chloe Moretz Set To Star In Drama About Gay Conversion Therapy

November 21, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

chloe-moretzA few months ago Chloe Moretz dropped out of all the movies she was attached to and suggested she wanted to take time out. However it quickly turned out that rather than not making movies, she wanted to take a break from making decision based on what it would do for her career, and instead get involved in projects that are important to her.

Now she’s found another of those projects, as THR reports that she’s set to star in The Miseducation of Cameron Post, which takes a look at the issues surrounding gay conversion therapy.

The movie is based on Emily Danforth’s coming-of-age novel, which ‘is set in 1993 and follows a girl forced into gay conversion therapy center after getting caught with the prom queen.’ The film will see ‘Moretz as Cameron, an orphan who’s taken in by her ultra-conservative aunt. American Honey breakout star Lane will play Cameron’s friend and fellow “disciple” at the conversion therapy clinic to which they are sent. The cast also includes John Gallagher Jr. (Short Term 12), Forrest Goodluck (The Revenant) and Jennifer Ehle (A Quiet Passion).’

Desiree Akhavan will direct. She is best known for the excellent Appropriate Behaviour about the life of a bisexual Iranian-American, who’s looking for a new direction in life. She also recently signed on to be the lead in the UK comedy series, The Bisexual.

Gay-themed projects are certainly close to Moretz’s heart, as she has previously talked about how seeing her two gay brothers come out and get bullied for their sexuality helped motivate her to fight for LGBT and other rights.

Appropriate Behavior (Cinema Review)

March 6, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Desiree Akhavan, Rebecca Henderson, Halley Feiffer, Scott Adsit
Director: Desiree Akhavan
Running Time: 86 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: March 6th 2015 (UK)

Appropriate Behavior is a proper audience divider. Desiree Akhavan’s Shirin is narcissistic, self-obsessed and shallow, but convinced she’s deep, complex and misunderstood. However, how you take the film depends on how self-aware you think it is. Is it on Shirin’s side and lauding the life of the tragically hip, or is it well aware of her shortcomings and essentially satirising it?

I’d safely say it’s the latter, but I can see why have assumed the former, as the film’s humour is dry as a bone and so it’s not too shocking some viewers have missed it. [Read more…]
