Hunger Games: Catching Fire Gets Jeffrey Wright as Beetee

September 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Lionsgate has announced that Jeffrey Wright has been cast in the role of Beetee in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, helping to round out the cast for the movie, which begins shooting soon. Hailing from District 3, Beetee earns the nickname ‘Volts’ because of his electronics expertise.

Critically acclaimed and known to theater, film and television audiences alike, Wright won Tony Award in 1994 for his work in Tony Kushner’s epic Angels in America and reprised his role(s) in Mike Nichols’ 2003 mini-series adaptation of the play, earning both a Golden Globe and an Emmy for his groundbreaking performance. Since then he has played memorable roles in films as diverse as Basquiat, Source Code, Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, W., Syriana and Cadillac Records.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire begins as Katniss Everdeen has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. As they embark on a ‘Victor’s Tour’, Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) – a competition that could change Panem forever and thrusts former champions back into the arena.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire will be directed by Francis Lawrence, with a release date of November 22nd, 2013 already set.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Gets Lynn Cohen as Mags

August 3, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

With The Hunger Games: Catching Fire featuring a Games where former champions must go up against one another, there’s a lot of new cast members who need to be cast. Now the movie has its Mags, as Variety reports that Lynn Cohen has been cast in the role. Mags is an eighty year old Hunger Games victor from District 4, and also a former mentor to the dashing Finnick Odair.

Known to New York theatre audiences for decades, Cohen has also appeared in films such as Steven Spielberg’s Munich and Charlie Kaufman’s Synecdoche, New York, as well as Sex and the City and its sequel. She can next be seen in They Came Together, with Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler.

Mags in one of the more interesting of the former champions, as she wasn’t actually chosen for the new Games, but essentially decided to sacrifice herself to save others, as she knows she far too old to win another Hunger Games. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire will be directed by Francis Lawrence. It’s set to shoot later this year, ahead of its release on November 22nd, 2013.

Hunger Games: Mockingjay Officially Split In Two

July 11, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After a lot of speculation, Lionsgate has officially confirmed that the final installment of The Hunger Games franchise will be split into two movies. The studio announced that The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 will be released on November 21st, 2014, with The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 ending the series November 20th, 2015.

Lionsgate has been thinking about this for a while, but needed to ensure it could get the key actors to agree to an extra movie before officially announcing the move. Splitting the last story in a major novel-to-film franchise has almost become common practice as of late, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows into two parts, and Summit doing the same with Stephenie Meyer’s The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire goes into production next month, which is set for release on November 22nd, 2013. Francis Lawrence is directing the sequel, although it’s too early to tell if he will be back for this two-part finale. (Source: Variety)

Jena Malone Joins The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

July 4, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last week it appeared Lionsgate had decided on actress Zoe Aggeliki to play Johanna Mason in the highly-anticipated sequel The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, but it appears that’s fallen through, as THR reports that Sucker Punch’s Jena Malone is in early talks for the role.

Johanna Mason is a loner who is said to have no family and friends back home in District 7. She tries to form an alliance with Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) during the 75th Hunger Games, where the field is comprised of former winners. The character is known for her proficiency with an axe, and for her ability to manipulate others into trusting her. However she has a very prickly relationship with Katniss.

Francis Lawrence is directing from a screenplay by Simon Beaufoy and Michael Arndt. Production is slated to begin in late September.

Mia Wasikowska Eyed For Catching Fire

June 25, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While some of the rumours surrounding The Hunger Games: Catching Fire casting have proved to be more reliable than others, the latest reports via The Playlist say actresses Mia Wasikowska and newcomer Zoe Aggeliki are the top candidates to portray former Hunger Games champion Johanna Mason.

The character hails from District 7, and it is said she has no friends or family back home. She becomes an ally to Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) during the 75th Hunger Games, although she has a rather pricky relationship with Katniss.

Director Francis Lawrence is said to be keen on finding the right actress for the role, whether she’s an established talent like Mia Wasikowska, or a fresh face like Zoe Aggeliki. There is speculation that Zoe Aggeliki may sign on in the next few days, but that is not set in stone yet. The actress will make her feature debut next summer in R.I.P.D., where she plays the avatar of Ryan Reynolds’ character, Nick. She also landed a role in Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, as Silena Beauregard.

Shooting on Catching Fire starts later this summer, so the role will have to be cast soon.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Seeks Philip Seymour Hoffman

June 13, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In the last couple of weeks, most of the speculation for new actors joining The Hunger Games: Catching Fire has surrounded the role of the handsome Finnick Odair, but there are other new characters to be cast as well. One of the more interesting is Plutarch Heavensbee, the new head of The Hunger Games (after the previous one was executed).

Now THR reports that the part has been offered to Philip Seymour Hoffman. There is no word yet on whether the actor has accepted the offer, or if negotiations have begun. It is a slightly bigger commitment than usual for Hoffman, as he would have to agree to appear in the third Hunger Games movie, Mockingjay, as well.

In Suzanne Collins’ novel, Plutarch tries to subtly show Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) that he is on her side, although he treats her and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) like any other Tribute in public, although his true role is not revealed until the end.

Francis Lawrence is directing Catching Fire from a screenplay by Michael Arndt (Little Miss Sunshine). Shooting is due to run from July through December in Atlanta, Georgia.

Director Francis Lawrence Offered Hunger Games Sequel

April 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Once Gary Ross officially confirmed that he wouldn’t direct Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire, there’s been a lot of speculation over who would replace him. Lionsgate has been scrambling to find a replacement so that the movie can keep with its plan to shoot this autumn (something that’s vital as Catching Fire needs to wrap by December so Jennifer Lawrence can move on to X-Men: First Class 2).

Now Variety reports that I Am Legend director Francis Lawrence has been chosen by Lionsgate to helm Catching Fire, with a formal offer expected to be issued imminently. Bennett Miller (Moneyball) was the other front runner, and both directors met with the studio yesterday before Lionsgate made their final choice. Other directors being considered included Tomas Alfredson, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Cary Fukunaga, and Duncan Jones.

Hunger Games stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Liam Hemsworth are all returning for the sequel, which already has a release date set of November 22nd, 2013.
