Abigail Spencer Joins Joss Whedon Produced In Your Eyes

January 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It appears Mad Men star Abigail Spencer has lined herself up a role to star in the supernatural romance In Your Eyes, which has been written by Joss Whedon, who is also producing, according to Vulture.

Speaking to Spencer at the Art of Elysium gala in Los Angeles at the weekend, Vulture got the actress to confirm that she was set to star in the film, which she describes as, “It’s the most romantic film in the history of time. It’s a supernatural romance.”

Brin Hill is directing the low-budget movie, which centres on two people who are preternaturally or supernaturally connected, despite being polar opposites. The movie is being made by Whedon’s Bellwether production company, which he set up to make micro-budget features outside the studio machine. Joss’ first film for the company is a new version of Much Ado About Nothing, which he directed towards the end of last year.

Joss Whedon Producing In Your Eyes

November 1, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Joss Whedon is one ridiculously busy man. Not content with taking on The Avengers, it was revealed last week that he’s also managed to find the time to shoot a new, low-budget take on Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing which he planning to take on the festival circuit next year.

If that weren’t enough, Deadline reports that he’s also written and is planning to produce In Your Eyes, which Brin Hill will direct – or at least he wrote it a while ago but is only now moving forward. The movie will be the second film (after Much Ado) from Whedon’s new micro-studio Bellwether which will embracce ‘a DIY ethos and newer technologies’ to make small indie movies.

Not a vast amount is known about the plot, other than that it’s ‘a metaphysical love story about two seemingly polar opposites who are deeply connected in ways neither could have ever imagined’. Whedon says, “When I wrote In Your Eyes, I didn’t have the wherewithal (or the moxie) to make it without an established production house. I believe, as I did then, that it’s a pretty timeless romance, and now, with the creation of Bellwether Pictures (and Brin Hill’s elegant, passionate take on the piece), I have the opportunity to prove it. (I also have a 37% increase in moxie.) I love this team and I can’t wait to see them bring In Your Eyes to life.”

Joss Whedon Reveals Much Ado About Nothing

October 25, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

You’d think that with The Avengers on his plate Joss Whedon would have enough to do to fill his time. However, he’s apparently not content with just the superheroes, as he’s also found time to shoot a new version of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, filled with actors he’s worked with on his TV shows and films.

Hints about the movie were first tweeted over the weekend by the likes of Firefly actors Nathan Fillion and Sean Maher, along with links to a website – muchadomovie.com. However at the time nobody was certain exactly what it was, with some speculating it was a web series (like Whedon’s Dr. Horrible), other saying it was some sort of joke and still more betting it was a real movie, even though they weren’t sure how Whedon would have had time to make it, or if he did, how he kept a secret.

However, now Bellwether Pictures – a micro-studio Whedon has set up to produce ‘small, independent narratives for all media, embracing a DIY ethos and newer technologies’ – has revealed more info. Apparently the new take on Shakespeare’s classic was filmed in just 12 days on location in Santa Monica. the film features a stellar cast of beloved (or soon to be beloved) actors – some of them veterans of Shakespearean theater, some completely new to the form. But all dedicated to the idea that this story bears retelling, that this dialogue is as fresh and intoxicating as any being written, and that the joy of working on a passion project surrounded by dear friends, admired colleagues and an atmosphere of unabashed rapture far outweighs their hilariously miniature paychecks.

Shot in glorious black and white by Jay Hunter (Paper Heart, Dollhouse), the film stars Amy Acker (The Cabin in the Woods, Alias) and Alexis Denisof (How I Met Your Mother, Angel) as Beatrice and Benedick, the world’s least likely lovers headed for their inevitable tumble into love. As Joss Whedon puts it: “The text is to me a deconstruction of the idea of love, which is ironic, since the entire production is a love letter – to the text, to the cast, even to the house it’s shot in.” The supporting cast includes Nathan Fillion (Castle, Waitress) as Dogberry, Clark Gregg (The Avengers, Iron Man) as Leonato, Fran Kranz (The Cabin in the Woods, Dollhouse) as Claudio and Reed Diamond (Franklin & Bash, Moneyball) as Don Pedro. The film should be completed by early spring and headed for the festival circuit.

It’ll be interesting to see what Whedon’s managed to come up with.
