Vampire Academy (DVD Review)

July 21, 2014 By Tim Isaac 5 Comments

Starring: Zoey Deutch, Lucy Fry, Danila Kozlovsky, Dominic Sherwood, Gabriel Byrne
Director: Mark Waters
Running Time: 104 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: July 14th 2014 (UK)

There have been a vast array of films in the last few years that have bid to be the new Twilight or Harry Potter. While Vampire Academy may not have ever been likely to have hit those heights, there were hopes it could carve out its own niche. Instead it pretty much sank without trace, partly because it’s so busy trying to be other popular franchises – or perhaps parodying them – that it never becomes anything on its own.

The film’s mythology follows three races of being – the Moroi, who are a mortal, largely benevolent magical race but who have to live on blood; the Strigoi, who are the evil, immortal vampires of myths; and the half-bloodsucker Dhampir, a warrior race who protect the Moroi. [Read more…]

Vampire Academy Trailer – From the makers of Mean Girls & Heathers

November 25, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

With the end of Twilight, are young adults still interested in bloodsuckers? Vampire Academy is hoping so. Now a new trailer has arrived, which suggests that despite the dreadful name it might not be too bad – although it appears fans of the books are in two minds about whether it looks like it’ll be able to capture the novels.

You’d have hope we’d get something decent from Mean Girls helmer Mark Waters and Heathers writer Daniel Waters, who’ve adapted Richelle Mead‘s popular series of books for the big screen.

The film tells the tale of Rose Hathaway, a 17-year-old girl who has a mental and spiritual bond with her vampire best friend Lissa. The two girls attend a special school for Vampires who struggle to retain some humanity while other Vampires become more feral. Zoey Deutch (Beautiful Creatures) and the Australian Lucy Fry playing Rose and Lissa, with Russian star Danila Kozlovski as Dimitri.

The film’s due out early next year. [Read more…]

Director Mark Waters Takes On Vampire Academy: Blood Sisters

February 4, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

mark-watersMark Waters has had a fair amount of success in the family/teen film arena, with movies such as Freaky Friday, Mean Girls, The Spiderwick Chronicles and Mr. Popper’s Penguins, and he’s sticking to that area for Vampire Academy: Blood Sisters, according to Deadline.

The movie is based on the first volume in Richelle Mead’s bestselling young adult series of Vampire Academy books. The books ‘tell the tale of Rose Hathaway, a 17-year-old girl who has a mental and spiritual bond with her vampire best friend Lissa. The two girls attend a special school for Vampires who struggle to retain some humanity while other Vampires become more feral’.

The two main roles have already been cast, with relative newcomers Zoey Deutch (Beautiful Creatures) and the Australian Lucy Fry playing Rose and Lissa, as well as Russian star Danila Kozlovski as Dimitri.

Twilight backers Summit are behind the movie and will he hoping this can match the success of their most popular franchise. Mark Waters’ brother Daniel is writing the script – and he’s a good choice as his most famous screenplay is the excellent teen flick Heathers.
