Hacksaw Ridge Trailer – Andrew Garfield stars in Mel Gibson’s return as a director

July 28, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

hacksaw-ridgeMany thought that after his last set of outbursts a few years ago, Mel Gibson had blown it so badly that he’d never be allowed on a film set again. However, he’s has a few small movie roles, and is now returning to the director’s chair with Hacksaw Ridge, 10 years after his last outing behind the camera, Apocalypto.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘HACKSAW RIDGE is the extraordinary true story of Desmond Doss [Andrew Garfield] who, in Okinawa during the bloodiest battle of WWII, saved 75 men without firing or carrying a gun. He was the only American soldier in WWII to fight on the front lines without a weapon, as he believed that while the war was justified, killing was nevertheless wrong. As an army medic, he single-handedly evacuated the wounded from behind enemy lines, braved fire while tending to soldiers and was wounded by a grenade and hit by snipers. Doss was the first conscientious objector awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.’

The movie will be out towards the end of the year. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Andrew Garfield Is Going To Hacksaw Ridge, With Mel Gibson Likely To Direct

November 21, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Andrew-GarfieldAre we due for another Mel Gibson meltdown? Last time he decided enough time has passed for him to be allowed to move back into the public eye (admittedly the world didn’t end when he appeared in Expendables 3), he had another very public scandal that meant he had to go back into hiding again. He’ll be hoping that doesn’t happen again.

Now he’s in talks to direct his first film since Apocalypto eight years ago, Hacksaw Ridge, with Andrew Garfield in talks to star, according to Deadline.

The movie based on the true story of Desmond T. Doss, who despite being a conscientious objector during World War II he managed to win the Congressional Medal of Honor (the first conscientious objector to do so). Doss refused to kill enemy soldiers but still served as a Army medic during the Battle of Okinowa.

In 1945 President Harry S. Truman gave him the Congressional Medal of Honor in 1945 for saving so many lives. Hacksaw Ridge refers to the location of a brutal two-week stretch of the Battle of Okinawa, where American troops fought Japanese soldiers on rocky cliffs.

The fact Deadline suggest that negotiations with Gibson are “moving forward delicately and slowly”, suggests there are plenty of issues to iron out, not least of which will be the backers seeking assurances that their won’t be another implosion that could affect the film.

Mel Gibson’s Maccabees Movie Put On Hold

April 12, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last year it was announced that Mel Gibson was working on a movie about the Jewish story of The Maccabees. From the first announcement, many wondered whether it was a genuine interest in the story or an attempt at damage limitation following renewed claims of anti-Semitism, which led to Gibson’s interest.

Now though, the project has stalled, with Warner Bros. saying that the latest version of the script lacked “feeling” and “a sense of triumph,” according to TheWrap. The studio is now said to be “Analyzing what to do with the project,” but at the moment it’s been put on the shelf.

It’s been a hot potato from the beginning, with many Jewish groups furious at the very idea of Gibson’s involvement, especially if he were to also star as Judah Maccabee, who led his brothers in revolt against the Seleucid Empire, ruled by Antiochus Epiphanes who had forbidden Jewish practices, and whose victory is celebrated at Hanukkah.

However it’s not just Jewish groups who are angry now, as the movie’s screenwriter, Joe Eszterhas, has launched an angry tirade at Gibson, accusing him of numerous instances of anti-Semitism while working on the film, and saying the only reason Mel was interested in the film was because he thought he could use it to convert Jews to Christianity. You can read more about that here.

The Maccabees movie may still live on – it’s a great story – but it’s tough to imagine Gibson directing it.
