Ralph Fiennes Plans Film About Bisexual Dancer Rudolph Nureyev

June 27, 2015 By Tim Isaac 2 Comments

ralph-fiennes-rudolph-nureyevWith Coriolanus and The Invisible Woman Ralph Fiennes has shown he doesn’t just have talent in front of the camera, he’s a pretty good director too. Where to order Kamagra, here https://www.hksurgeon.com/kamagra/ cheapest Sildenafil no prescription. While Fiennes also starred in both those movies, he now plans to make a film he won’t also appear in, about legendary dancer Rudolph Nureyev.

Screen Daily says that it’s not known what the exact plot will be, but that ‘the film is understood not to be a biopic but instead charts a specific incident in the life of the celebrated dancer who defected from the Soviet Union to the West in 1961, despite KGB efforts to stop him.’

He’s certainly a figure who did plenty of things you could make an interesting movie about, not least his defection and a dancing career that made his one of the most famous ballet practitioners in history. It may also take in his sexuality. Nureyev largely had relationships with men (although he did date women as a young man, and there are rumours about his seducing prominent ladies during the height on his fame), mostably with fellow dancer Erik Bruhn, with whom he had an on-again-off-again relationship for over 25 years. However if the movie takes place before Nureyev defected that relationship won’t feature, as they didn’t meen until Rudolph went West. It’ll be interesting to see how his sexuality features in the movie.

Sadly the great dancer died of AIDS in 1993, aged 53.

New The Invisible Woman Trailer – Plus a poster for Ralph Fiennes’ Dickens flick

November 20, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ralph Fiennes got plenty of plaudits for his directorial debut, Coriolanus, and for his second venture he’s moving from Shakespeare to Dickens with The Invisible Woman – it’s not based on a Dickens tale, but it is about him.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Felicity Jones (Breathe In, Like Crazy) stars as Nelly Ternan, the woman with whom Charles Dickens (Ralph Fiennes) had a secret decade-long relationship. They are joined by a stellar British cast including Kristin Scott Thomas (Four Weddings and a Funeral, I’ve Loved you So Long) as Nelly’s mother – marking the first occasion Fiennes and Scott Thomas have appeared together on screen since the Academy Award® winning The English Patient in 1996 – alongside Tom Hollander (In the Loop, Pride & Prejudice) as author and friend of Dickens, Wilkie Collins, and Joanna Scanlan (‘The Thick of It’, Notes on a Scandal) who delivers a heart-breaking performance as Dickens’ long-suffering wife, Catherine.

‘Nelly (Felicity Jones), a happily-married mother and schoolteacher, is haunted by her past. Her memories, provoked by remorse and guilt, take us back in time to follow the story of her relationship with Charles Dickens (Ralph Fiennes) with whom she discovered an exciting but fragile complicity.

‘Dickens – famous, controlling and emotionally isolated within his success – falls for Nelly, who comes from a family of actors. The theatre is a vital arena for Dickens – a brilliant amateur actor – a man more emotionally coherent on the page or on stage, than in life. As Nelly becomes the focus of Dickens’ passion and his muse, for both of them secrecy is the price, and for Nelly a life of “invisibility”.’

The film’s out in the UK February 7th 2014. [Read more…]
