Since he moved into film, Rob Zombie has stuck to extreme horror such as The Devil’s Rejects, House of 1,000 Corpses and his Halloween films, but now he’s out to prove there are more strings to his bow, as Deadline reports he’s set to write and direct the hockey drama Broad Street Bullies.

The film is about the Philadelphia Flyers hockey team, which evolved from a cellar-dwelling expansion team into a team that racked up victories and penalty minutes in equal measure during the 1970s. While it’s certainly not exploitation horror, it does follow Zombie’s style of bringing the extremities of 70s filmmaking back to cinema, with this film allowing him to show the aggression of the ice, as seen in the 1977 sports classic. Slap Shot.

The Flyers were renowned for their violent style of playing, which thrilled crowds and had a huge impact on the sport – many would say to its detriment as a competitive sport, but making it more thrilling to watch.
