Jamie Foxx Up For White House Down

June 7, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Sony only bought the screenplay for White House Down a couple of months ago, but they’ve already attached Roland Emmerich to direct and are moving fast to get the film in cinemas as quickly as possible. Now they’re starting to cast the movie, with Variety reporting that Jamie Foxx is being eyed to play the president in the film.

The story is described as Die Hard set in the White House, concentrating on a paramilitary takeover of the President’s official residence. Not too many other details about the script are known, except that Channing Tatum is set to play a Secret Service agent who leaps into action to protect the Commander In Chief.

Foxx is yet to receive an offer for the movie, but Emmerich is very keen on him and it’s thought the actor is open to the movie.

Independence Day Going 3D Summer 2013

June 1, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

With Titanic 3D having grossed $344 million around the world, it seems Fox is looking into what other titles in its back catalogue it can post-convert in the hope of making a bit more cash. Now they’ve announced that the studio and director Roland Emmerich, in conjunction with Stereo 3D (which did the work on Titanic), will produce a three-dimensional version of Independence Day, which will be released worldwide on July 3rd, 2013.

To be honest I have reservations about whether this will be a success. With some films like Titanic and Jurassic Park, a post-conversion 3D makes sense, but while Independence Day was a big hit in 1996, I’m not convinced it’s retained enough popularity to make a re-release a major success. Perhaps I’m wrong, and Fox may be using the conversion to see whether it’s worth backing the pricey sequels Roland Emmerich has long had in the works.

Fox has also set several other dates, with Steven Spielberg’s epic Robopocalypse shifting to April 25, 2014 (ID43D now occupies its former release date), while on May 23rd, 2014 the studio unleashes Dawn of the Planet of the Apes worldwide. July 18th, 2014 meanwhile sees the release of the X-Men: First Class Sequel, to be directed by Matthew Vaughn.

Channing Tatum Circling White House Down

May 15, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Channing Tatum is getting ready to show off his action man skills, as he’s in talks to star in Sony’s action-thriller, White House Down, according to THR. Last month Roland Emmerich was in early talks to direct, and has now been confirmed to take the helm.

The story is described as Die Hard set in the White House, concentrating on a paramilitary takeover of the President’s official residence. Not too many other details about the script are known.

Sony is moving fast, as they only bought the script in March, but as it was the largest script sale this year, with James Vanderbilt (The Amazing Spider-Man) getting $3 million for it, you can see why they’d want to ensure a speedy return on their investment. No production schedule was revealed, but it shouldn’t be too long before it’s shooting.

Roland Emmerich May Be Up For White House Down

April 3, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Roland Emmerich vowed to stop blowing up the world after 2012, but people weren’t that interested when he turned to questioning the authorship of Shakespeare’s plays in Anonymous. So what to do next? Well it appears he’s mulling a dip into thriller territory, as Deadline reports he’s in talks to helm White House Down, based on James Vanderbilt’s (The Amazing Spider-man) script that Sony bought last week for over $3 million.

It’s one of the biggest spec script sales of the last couple of years and so Sony is keen to lock in a director and get moving as soon as they can.

Emmerich has blown up the White House a few times, but this time he’ll be going more Die Hard, as the script focusses on a paramilitary takeover of the famous building. It’s not as overblown as 2012 or as overly-dramatic as Anonymous, so let’s hope it works out for Emmerich.
