Christoph Waltz Up For Fact-Based Thriller True Crimes

June 8, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

christoph-waltzDouble Oscar-winner Christoph Waltz has signed up to star in the fact-based European thriller True Crimes. While there’s no director attached as yet, THR suggests the film may end up reuniting Waltz with Carnage helmer Roman Polanski.

The project is based on a 2008 New Yorker article by David Gann, which was about the mysterious case of Polish writer Krystian Bala, who became the prime suspect in a murder . The death had been a cold case for years, with some describing it as the perfect crime. Bala wasn’t even a suspect until he published a novel that described a murder strikingly similar to the one that had confounded local police for years, complete with details the authorities thought only the killer could know.

Waltz is set to play Polish police officer Jacek Wroblewski, who re-opens the case and is sucked into an underworld of sex rings and drugs. The tone of the story has been compared to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Brett Ratner, John Cheng and David Gerson are producing the thriller. There’s no news on when it might shoot.

Roman Polanski To Direct Venus in Furs

September 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Roman Polanski has revealed that he intends to direct a film version of David Ives’s play Venus in Fur, a Broadway and off-Broadway success that received a Tony nomination for Best Play and won one for Nina Arianda as Best Actress.

Roman Polanski will work on the erotic black comedy while awaiting completion of the screenplay for D., based on the historic Dreyfus scandal, which Roman Polanski will direct as well. While Polanski has usually worked in English, Venus in Fur will be filmed in French and will star Emmanuelle Seigner and Louis Garrel.

“I’ve been looking for a chance to make a film in French with Emmanuelle Seigner for a long time,” says Roman Polanski, who previously directed Emmanuelle Seigner in Frantic and Bitter Moon. “Reading Venus in Fur I realised the moment had arrived. I got so fired up to put this brilliant black comedy on film that I decided to fit it in before D., whose screenplay and pre-production will demand a few more months. Louis Garrel and Emmanuelle Seigner will make for a stunning duo.”

The movie will be independently financed and will begin filming in Paris this November. (Source: EW)

Roman Polanski Plans Political Thriller D

May 10, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Roman Polanski’s criminal troubles seem to be on hold at the moment, and so he’s busy planning his next film, which Variety reports will be called D, and based on the Dreyfus affair ofthe late 19th Century. Robert Harris, who worked with Polanski on The Ghost, will write the script.

D is about a 1894 incident in which French Army Officer Alfred Dreyfus was wrongly convicted of passing along secrets to the German enemy. Dreyfus was one of the few Jewish officers in the French Army at the time, which added a whole new angle to a scandal that had him wrongfully imprisoned for 12 years.

While Polanski is Jewish himself and therefore has some personal connection to the story, there will undoubtedly be some who will wonder whether he’s looking at the imprisonment and persecution of Dreyfus as an allegory for his own legal troubles, which most recently saw him under house arrest in Switzerland, awaiting deportation to the US on underage sex and fugitive charges. He was eventually freed, although he’d still be locked up if he ever goes back to America.
