Laurence Anyways (Cinema)

November 30, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Melvil Poupaud, Suzanne Clement, Nathalie Baye
Director: Xavier Dolan
Running Time: 168 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: November 30th 2012

After directing his first film, I Killed My Mother, at the age of 19 and following it up with the pretty good Heartbeats, many people have been wondering what Xavier Dolan would come up with next. The answer is Laurence Anyways, about 10 years in the relationship between Fred (Suzanne Clement) and Laurence (Melvil Poupaud).

At the outset they are just a normal man and woman who love each other and suffer the usual ups and downs of relationships. However Laurence can’t hold something in any longer and after two years with Fred he tells her that he’s transsexual and wants to start living as a woman. Inevitably this causes problems, with Fred initially wondering whether she should just leave – especially as her sister seems to think is the only solution. However they stay together, but the transition proves tough on both of them, and not solely because of Laurence becoming a woman. [Read more…]

Crush Of The Day: Xavier Dolan

November 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Xavier Dolan is pretty sickening. He’s good looking, young (just 23), queer and has already directed three feature-length movies, as well as starring in several more. The French-Canadian started out as teenage actor, appearing in the likes of Martyrs. However when he was just 19 he managed to persuade backers to give him the cash to make his feature debut as a director with I Killed My Mother (J’ai tué ma mère), which he also wrote. The film went on to win three awards during the Director’s Fortnight program at the Cannes Film Festival and brought him much acclaim.

Dolan followed that with Heartbeats (Les Amours Imaginaires), about two friends – a man and a woman – who become increasingly infatuated with a mysterious young man. His third movie, Laurence Anyways, arrives in UK cinemas on Friday (November 30th), which stay with LGBT themes, as it’s about the relationship between a male-to-female transsexual and her lover. While Dolan doesn’t star in that one, we still thought it was a good excuse to find some cute pics of him to crush on.

Xavier is already busy putting together his next movie, Tom à la ferme, which follows a man whose lover dies, and he must then meet the dead boyfriend’s family, who weren’t aware their deceased relative was gay.

But for now, just enjoy the pics (which grow if you click on them). And below that I’ve embedded Dolan’s paint-infused sex scene from I Killed My Mother. [Read more…]

Caleb Landry Jones Cast In Xavier Dolan’s Latest Gay-Themed Flick

October 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Queer filmmaker and actor Xavier Dolan made headlines when he directed his first movie, I Killed My Mother, when he was just 19. He’s since followed that with Heartbeats and Laurence Always. Now the 24-year-old is planning a new one, Tom a la ferme, and Variety reports he’s signed X-Men: First Class star Caleb Landry Jones to appear in the film.

The French-Canadian movie is about a young man called Tom (to be played by Dolan), who’s gripped by grief after the death of his boyfriend. When he meets his lover’s family, he discovers that the man’s mother wasn’t aware of her son’s sexuality or his relationship with Tom. The film then details their issues getting to know one another.

It isn’t clear which role Caleb will play, although it is known that while most of the movie will be in French, Jones has an English-language role.

Doland will direct from a script he wrote with Michel Marc Bouchard. Shooting begins in the next few days in Montreal.
