Dan Stevens Will Be The Beast In Disney’s Live-Action Beauty And The Beast

March 5, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

dan-stevensJust yesterday we said when we were reporting that Luke Evans was in talks to play Gaston in Disney’s live-action Beauty And The Beast, that it wouldn’t be long until the film had found its beast, but it happened quicker than we thought, as THR reports that Dan Stevens has entered negotiations for the role.

Looking at Stevens’ lovely face it seems rude that he’d ever be classed as a Beast, but presumably there’ll be plenty of makeup to ensure he looks suitably hairy for the role.

As we mentioned yesterday, it’s not known how close the film will be to the 1991 animated movie, or indeed if it’ll be a musical, but Emma Watson (who’ll play Belle) ahs previously said on Facebook, “It was such a big part of my growing up, it almost feels surreal that I’ll get to dance to ‘Be Our Guest’ and sing ‘Something There.’ … Time to start some singing lessons.”

Since leaving Downton Abbey, Stevens has been building his film career with movies such as Night At The Museum 3, A Walk Among the Tombstones and The Guest, but this will be his biggest role yet, even if he is hidden behind a lot of fur.

Bill Condon is set to direct, with the movie due to shoot later this year.

Luke Evans Set To Be Gaston In Disney’s Live-Action Beauty and the Beast

March 4, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Luke-EvansIn late January Emma Watson was officially announced as Belle in Disney’s planned live-action version of Beauty And The Beast. Now Variety reports that she’s got someone to bother her Luke Evans has signed up to be the prancing, primping, egotistical ladies-man Gaston.

The fact Gaston is in the movie further suggests that Disney is planning to hew fairly close to the animated version, which isn’t too surprising considering the live-action stage version of that 1991 movie became one of the longest running shows in Broadway history.

Watson will play the independent young woman who ends up being locked in the castle of a prince, who has been cursed due to his selfishness to become a beast. While they initially hate one another, soon a bond begins to grow. Gaston is the self-obsessed hunter who decides that Belle should be his girlfriend, and isn’t impressed when she turns him down, or when he discovers she actually likes her hairy captor more than she likes him.

What the film doesn’t have yet is a beast, but it presumably won’t be long until it finds one.

Bill Condon is set to direct, with production due to kick off later this year.

Emma Watson Confirmed For Disney’s Live-Action Beauty And The Beast

January 26, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

emma watsonFor the last few years Disney has been looking into their animated back catalogue to see which of their movies they can take into the live-action arena, resulting in films like Maleficent and the upcoming Cinderella.

They’ve also been working on a new version of Beauty and the Beast, and back in 2012 it was suggested Emma Watson might play the lead. However since then it’s not been clear if she would indeed be the movie’s Belle, with many believing she had left after rumoured director Guillermo Del Toro stepped away.

However now Disney has officially announced her casting in the movie, which Bill Condon will direct.

So far there’s no release date set and no news on the exact direction the film will take the classic tale of a young woman and her unexpected romance with a fearsome man who’s been transformed into a beast.

Bill Condon Directing Live-Action Beauty & The Beast For Disney

June 6, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

beauty-and-the-beast-1991The successful opening of Maleficent must have given Disney confidence that their plan to make live-action movies based on classic fairy tales is a good idea. They already have Cinderella coming next year, Alice In Wonderland 2 will go into production this summer, The Jungle Book is in development and now it’s been revealed they’ve developing Beauty & The Beast, with Dreamgirls and Twilight: breaking Dawn helmer Bill Condon directing.

Variety broke the news, adding that Evan Spiliotopoulos (Ouija, Hercules) is writing the screenplay. There have been no specific story details released, so it’s not known if it will stick close to the House Of Mouse’s 1991 animated classic, or whether it will follow Maleficent’s trick of showing a different side of the story.

It’s not clear either if this version will bring any of the Oscar winning songs across to live action. However Condon has plenty of musical experience, such as directing Dreamgirls and writing the screenplay for Chicago, so it’s possible.

The animated version one of the few animated movies to receive an Oscar nomination for Best Picture, grossed over $375 million worldwide and spawned a massively successful stage version. It therefore has plenty of precedent for success.
