Trans-Themed Sitcom Boys Meets Girl Won’t Be Back For A Third Season

October 1, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

boy-meets-girl-tv-slideThe BBC broke new ground with Boy Meets Girl, a sitcom with a trans lead characters played by a trans actress. However, it’s been revealed that after two season, the show is coming to an end.

The BBC says, “We are tremendously proud of BBC Two’s Boy Meets Girl, but after two series feel the story has reached a natural end point. We would like to thank the creative team behind the show and of course the entire cast.”

While the story did reach a feeling of conclusion at the end of Series 2, it felt more because the makers knew there was a chance they wouldn’t be back for another set of episodes. It is a great shame though, as the show has been well received by critics and viewers, but there weren’t enough viewers to keep the BBC making more.

Rebecca Root, who played Judy, the 40-years trans woman who gets into a relationship with 20-something cisgender Leo, certainly feels it could have gone further. She tells Chortle, “Everyone’s really sorry that the show’s come to its end. We’re all very disappointed. The way I see shows going is that you establish your territory with the first series, you consolidate with the second and then you develop things in the third series – you can then open it up and really get into the meat of the story.

“I felt that while series two didn’t have quite the same tone as series one it was establishing a level. We were all looking forward to series three to get going… I felt that they were selling us a bit short by pulling it after two.”

Hopefully though, this won’t be the end of the BBC exploring trans issues, as while it has stated it needs to do better to serve the community, it’s recently revealed that Riley Carter Millington, the first trans actor to play a trans character in soap opera Eastenders, has also been dropped. With that and Boy Meets Girl going, it’s got a bit of a void to fill.

Boy Meets Girl – Series 2 (DVD Review)

August 14, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Denise Welch, Harry Hepple, Jonny Dixon, Nigel Betts, Rebecca Root
Director: Various
Running Time: 180 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: August 15th 2016 (UK)

Boy Meets Girl broke new ground last year as the first British sitcom with a transgender lead character, played by a transgender actress. It quickly showed that it was more than just a bit of token inclusivity by the BBC, with its witty and warm look at the blossoming love between 20-something Leo (Harry Hepple) and 39-year-old Judy (Rebecca Root).

Now it’s back for a second season, with six more episodes following Leo, Judy and their eccentric families. In the first episode, Leo decides it’s time to up the ante by proposing to Judy, with the rest of the series covering the run-up to their wedding. As well as plenty of worry about venues and whether Harry’s mother, Pam (Denise Welch), is being too pushy, there are quite a few other issues to deal with. [Read more…]

Boy Meets Girl Trailer – Take a first look at the BBC’s new trans-themed sitcom

August 21, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

boys-meets-girls-bbc2-slideA year or so ago the BBC put out a talent call for ideas for ideas that included trans* people and lives, as they had realised that while their public service remit means they are supposed to reflect all parts of British society, this is one area they’d pretty much ignored.

One of the main things to come from this effort is the upcoming sitcom Boy Meets Girl, which made a few headlines when it was announced due to the unfortunately rare fact that it cast a trans* woman, Rebecca Root, in one of the lead roles, rather than handing it to a cisgender actor.

Boy Meets Girls was created by Trans Comedy Award winner Elliott Kerrigan, alongside Simon Carlyle and Andrew Mettam. As well as Root, the series stars Harry Hepple as the ‘boy’ of the title, as well as the likes of Denise Welch, Janine Duvitski, Nigel Betts, Lizzie Roper and Jonny Dixon.

Boy Meets Girl has been compared to Gavin & Stacey, focussing on the developing relationship between Leo and Judy. However this isn’t a show that’s only about the issue trans* people face in the dating world, as there’s also a mini May-December thing going one as Leo is 26 and Judy is 40, and both have plenty of other things to negotiate.

Now the first 30-second promo for the show has been released, which you can take a look at below. The show will air in the UK later this year on BBC2. [Read more…]

BBC Releases First Pic From Upcoming Transgender-Themed Sitcom Boy Meets Girl

February 4, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

boy-meets-girls-tv-showAmazon’s Transparent has gained huge amounts of acclaim since it was first released, but what the transgender-themed show forgot was to have any major characters played by trans* actors. The BBC isn’t going to make that mistake as it’s commissioned Boy Meets Girl, which has just started shooting, and stars trans* actress Rebecca Root in one of the two central roles.

It’s her first major role and a bit of a change of pace, as Root has previously spent much of her time as a voice coach working with other trans* people.

To mark the start of filming the first image has been released, which you can see above.

The show came about after the BBC launched a talent search to create more shows based around trans* people. Boy Meets Girls was created Trans Comedy Award winner Elliott Kerrigan, alongside Simon Carlyle and Andrew Mettam.

However this isn’t a show that’s only about the issue trans* face in the dating world, as there’s also a mini May-December thing going one as Leo is 26 and Judy is 40, along with plenty of other things to negotiate.

BBC Commissioning Editor Kristian Smith comments: “Boy Meets Girl is a heart-warming romantic comedy that draws on the glorious differences that shape all of us. It’s a brilliant thing to be able to support comedy that is not only funny, but can also promote affirming messages of humanity and acceptance.”

The show will premiere on BBC2 in the UK later this year.
