Ang Lee Flirting With Angelina Jolie’s Cleopatra

January 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ang-leeThe idea of directing a movie about Cleopatra, with Angelina Jolie starring, has certainly fired up the interest of some top directors, with the likes of Paul Greengrass, James Cameron and more recently David Fincher all flirting with the project. However after Fincher dropped out last summer, the film has been waiting for someone to pick it up again.

Now THR reports that Ang Lee is showing interest, with the director himself stating that, “I’m about to read the script. It just feels right to me after all the other types of films I’ve done. What does it have in common with any of them? They’re all totally different! That’s what makes this perfect.”

Of course if he hasn’t read the script, he’s a long way from actually signing on, but I’m sure there are a lot of people who’d like to see what an Ang Lee directed Cleopatra would look like. Brian Helgeland wrote the first draft of that screenplay, before Eric Roth stepped in to do a rewrite in late 2011, working from Stacy Schiff‘s biography Cleopatra: A Life.

Producer Scott Rudin has previously described the film as, “It is a completely revisionist Cleopatra, a much more grown-up sophisticated version… She’s not a sex kitten, she’s a politician, strategist, warrior. In the Joseph Mankiewicz movie, Elizabeth Taylor is a seductress, but the histories of Cleopatra have been written by men. This is the first to be written by a woman. It felt like such a blow-the-doors-off-the-hinges idea of how to tell it, impossible to resist.”

Even if Lee signs on, it may be tough to get the greenlight on the film, as it’s bound to be expensive and historical epic tend to be financially risky endeavours.

David Fincher Drops Out Of Cleopatra

August 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The idea of making a movie about Cleopatra with Angelina Jolie starring certainly has the ability to attract major directing talent, but it’s having difficulty keeping hold of them. It was first announced with James Cameron attached to helm, but he had to drop out when he signed a huge deal with Fox that meant he had to concentrate on Avatar sequels.

He was briefly followed by Paul Greengrass, before David Fincher came onboard to help develop the movie in March 2011. The film will be based on Stacy Schiff’s biography Cleopatra: A Life, which presents the Egyptian queen more as a strong politician than the seductress she’s normally presented as. Eric Roth has been rewriting the script and in interviews Ficher has been talking up his excitement over the project. However now he’s dropped out, according to Vulture, although there’s no reason been given as to why he’s passed on the project.

The movie isn’t dead though, as producers are now looking for a new director, with Ang Lee apparently one of possibilities, although at this point he hasn’t actually received an offer or started negotiations. We’ll have to wait and see what happens next.

Cleopatra (Blu-ray)

February 12, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Rex Harrison, Hume Cronyn
Director: Joseph L. Mankiewicz
Running Time: 251 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: January 30th, 2012

If you ask someone about Cleopatra, they’re more likely to talk about how it famously went over-budget and nearly bankrupted 20th Century Fox than they are the movie itself. It’s known for its incredibly difficult production (you can read more about that fascinating story here), being a flop (which it wasn’t, incidentally) and for being the first movie where the main star pocketed $1 million upfront for a single movie.

Indeed Elizabeth Taylor ended up with a lot more than that. Her contract meant she got paid extra for every day production overran compared to initial projections,  so after an illness nearly killed her, production moved from England to Italy, the director and actors around her changed and other overruns added months to the production, it meant she got paid millions. Cleopatra is famous for perhaps being the most expensive movie ever made, if adjusted for inflation, and Elizabeth Taylor may well still be the best paid actress ever for a single movie, by the same measure.
