G.B.F. (Cinema/VoD)

March 21, 2014 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Starring: Michael J. Willett, Paul Iacono, Megan Mullally, Sasha Pieterse, Evanna Lynch
Director: Darren Stein
Running Time: 92 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: March 21st 2014

There have been several attempts at making gay-themed teen comedies, but most have failed in one way or another. Either the acting was abysmal or more commonly the script lacked wit and direction, feeling more dumb and dull than entertaining and memorable. G.B.F. is certainly a step up from those, with more polished production values, a great cast (including a fair few recognisable faces) and a script with both charm and wit. [Read more…]

G.B.F. UK Trailer – Does everyone need a gay best friend in Darren Stein’s comedy?

February 4, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We enjoyed G.B.F. (Gay Best Friend) when we caught it at the Iris Prize Festival, and now Peccadillo Pictures is setting out to let the rest of the UK get a look at the comedy. It’s due in British cinemas on March 21st, on demand March 22nd and on DVD April 7th. But before then you can take a look at the new UK trailer, (which was initially released via DigitalSpy).

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Meet Tanner (Michael J. Willett) and Brent (Paul Iacono). They are two gay best friends.  Brent longs for the spotlight and believes that coming out will make him instantly popular as this year’s must-have teen girl accessory; North Gateway High’s very first G.B.F. (or Gay Best Friend). Tanner on the other hand, would rather fly under the radar and finish high school without ever being noticed.

When things don’t go according to plan and Tanner is outed instead of Brent, the two boys go from B.F.Fs to instant frenemies. Enter the three most popular girls in school — queen-of-mean bombshell Fawcett, drama club diva Caprice, and sweet, Mormon good-girl ‘Shley, who launch an all-out social war to win Tanner’s status-enhancing friendship.

‘Featuring an all-star cast including Desperate Housewives’ Andrea Bowen, Will & Grace’s Megan Mullally, Orange Is The New Black’s Natasha Lyonne and Harry Potter’s Evanna Lynch. From the director of cult 90s teen movie JAWBREAKER comes this comic send-up of American high school clique culture in the vein of MEAN GIRLS and AMERICAN PIE’ [Read more…]

G.B.F. Clip Debuts – Fresh look at the LGBT teen comedy says ‘You’re A Gay Now’

November 20, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We enjoyed G.B.F. when we caught it at the Iris Prize Festival (you can read our review here), but it hasn’t gone on general release yet. Now a new clip has debuted, alongside the news that in the US the comedy will be available exclusively on DIRECTV from November 22nd through December 19th, before it debuts in cinema this January!

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In G.B.F., social warfare erupts when three high school clique queens battle for supremacy: drama diva Caprice (Xosha Roquemore), Mormon princess ‘Shley (Andrea Bowen) and blonde fashionista Fawcett (Sasha Pieterse). When unassuming Tanner (Michael J. Willet) is outted, he finds himself cast as the hottest new teen-girl accessory: The Gay Best Friend. The clique queens immediately pounce and makeover Tanner into their ideal arm candy, forcing him to choose between popularity and the true friends — including his own B.F.F. Brent (Paul Iacono) — that he’s leaving behind.’

Take a look at the new clip above. You can watch the trailer here. [Read more…]

G.B.F. – Iris Prize 2013 Review

October 16, 2013 By Scott Elliott Leave a Comment

Starring: Michael J. Willett, Paul Iacono, Megan Mullally, Sasha Pieterse, Evanna Lynch
Director: Darren Stein
Running Time: 92 mins

An American high school’s three popular girls vie with one another to win the most fashionable prize of all – the Gay Best Friend. This is much to the chagrin of newly-outed Tanner, who becomes the school’s ‘official’ gay guy, and finds himself and the relationships of those closest to him tested by the new-found power and status thrust upon him.

Described as ‘Mean Girls meets Clueless’ G.B.F isn’t short of style, or the usual collection of high school movie tropes, all brought together in a slick and sweetly sexy coming-of-age movie. [Read more…]

Fun New G.B.F. (Gay Best Friend) Poster Debuts As The Movie Premieres

April 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

gbf-poster
G.B.F. looks like one of the few 2013 LGBT-themed movies with real mainstream crossover potential, with the film taking the tropes of the teen comedy and giving things a bit of a gay twist. Darren Stein’s (Jawbreaker) film premièred at the Tribeca Film Festival on Friday, and with it came the film’s pretty-in-pink poster, which you can see above.

You can watch the trailer here.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘G.B.F. tells the story of two closeted best friends, Tanner (Michael J. Willett, United States of Tara) and Brent (Paul Iacono, The Hard Times of R.J. Berger). Brent longs for the spotlight and has a plan that will make him the most popular kid in school. He believes that coming out will make him instantly popular, as the newest must-have teen girl “accessory”: The G.B.F. (Gay Best Friend). Tanner on the other hand, would rather fly under the radar and graduate from high school without ever being noticed.

‘When things don’t go according to plan and Tanner is outed instead of Brent, the two boys go from B.F.F.s to instant frenemies and the three most popular girls in school — queen-of-mean bombshell Fawcett (Sasha Pieterse, Pretty Little Liars), drama club diva Caprice (Xosha Roquemore, Precious) and sweet, Mormon good-girl ‘Shley (Andrea Bowen, Desperate Housewives) launch an all-out social war to win Tanner’s status-enhancing friendship.’

Hopefully it’ll get a more general release later this year.

A few weeks ago we posted a behind-the-scenes look at the new comedy G.B.F. Well, now it’s time for the trailer, which makes the movie look like it’s going to be a lot of fun. The film premieres at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 19th, but you can get a taste of the movie above.

Take A Look Behind-The-Scenes Of The Movie G.B.F. (Gay Best Friend) & Help Fund It

March 12, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

G.B.F. (Gay Best Friend) is set to premiere at Tribeca next month, but it’s still looking for completion funds by launching a crowd-sourcing campaign to raise $30,000 to complete the movie, get it to festivals, pay for the music and help with marketing costs. And to help see if you want to be part of the film, they’ve released a behind-the-scenes look at the movie, which you can watch above.

The film has a great cast including queer actor Paul Iacono (The Hard Times of R.J. Berger), Megan Mullaly (Will & Grace), Michael J. Willett (United States of Tara), Natasha Lyonne, Rebecca Gayheart, Jonathan Silverman and Horatio Sanz.

Megan Mullally & Paul Iacono On For Darren Stein’s Gay Teen Movie G.B.F.

October 2, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Shooting has begun on the fun sounding gay-themed teen film G.B.F. – Gay Best Friend – with Jawbreaker director Darren Stein helming the movie, according to Variety. The plot is about the social warfare that erupts when two gay high school boys realise they must become GBFs to the most popular girls in school to improve their social status.

The great cast includes Megan Mullally, Natasha Lyonne, Rebecca Gayheart, Jonathan Silverman and Horatio Sanz, with younger characters played by Paul Iacono (who recently came out himself), Michael J. Willet (United States of Tara), Andrea Bowen (Desperate Housewives), Sasha Pieterse (Pretty Little Liars), Xosha Roquemore (Precious) and singer-actress Joanna ‘JoJo’ Levesque.

G.B.F. is now shooting in Los Angeles, the San Fernando Valley and Pasadena/Glendale.

Hopefully projects like this point the way for the future, where more LGBT-themed movies can attract decent casts and offer the sort of fun plots that will draw in a large audience.
