With Project X outperforming expectations and scoring a $20 million opening in the US, it’s not surprising that a sequel is moving forward, especially as the film didn’t cost a huge amount to make. THR reports that Warner Bros. has made its move, hiring Michael Bacall to write a treatment for a follow-up.
Project X is about three social outcasts (Thomas Mann, Oliver Cooper, Jonathan Daniel Brown), who decide to throw a party they hope will make them popular with the cool crowd at their high school. However, things go wildly out of control.
It isn’t known if Warner Bros. has deals in place with the actors to return for a sequel. Oliver Cooper and Jonathan Daniel Brown made their feature debuts in Project X, and Thomas Mann had only appeared in It’s Kind of a Funny Story before Project X. It’s not certain the sequel will ever get made, as it depends on how much producers Todd Phillips and Joel Silver respond to Michael Bacall’s treatment, as they have sequel approval.
