New Southpaw Trailer – Jake Gyllenhaal beefs up and gets into the ring

June 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

southpaw-poster1After getting skinny for the excellent Nightcrawler, Jake Gyllenhaal has been hitting the gym massively and beefed up to the max for the boxing drama Southpaw. Now a new trailer has arrived, which you can watch below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From acclaimed director Antoine Fuqua (TRAINING DAY) and starring Academy Award® nominated Jake Gyllenhaal (NIGHTCRAWLER, BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN) comes a story of tragedy, loss and the painful road to redemption… Billy “The Great” Hope (Gyllenhaal) is the reigning Junior Middleweight Champion whose unorthodox stance, the so-called “Southpaw,” consists of an ineloquent, though brutal, display of offensive fighting…one fueled by his own feelings of inadequacy and a desperate need for love, money and fame. With a beautiful family, home and financial security, Billy is on top both in and out of the ring until a tragic accident leaves his wife dead and sends him into a downward spiral.

‘His days now an endless haze of alcohol and prescription drugs, his daughter taken by Child Services and his home repossessed by the bank, Billy’s fate is all but sealed until a washed up former boxer named Tick agrees to take the bereaved pugilist under his wing so long as he agrees to his strict ethos. Relentless and utterly committed to a fighter that thinks as much as he throws punches, Tick rebuilds Billy into a new man: one that is agile, fearsome and uncompromising in the ring while thoughtful, loving and disciplined outside of it. Now, as he works to regain custody of his daughter and mounts a professional comeback, Billy must face his demons head-on as he learns that, sometimes, your greatest opponent can be yourself.’

The film hits cinemas in July. [Read more…]

Southpaw Trailer – Jake Gyllenhaal gets ripped to play a boxer

March 27, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

southpaw-movie-pic1Believe it or not, this ought to have been Eminem. When Southpaw was originally put into development the rapper was going to star, with the story being a metaphorical take on his life. However after Eminem left the film lived on and now it’s Jake Gyllenhaal who’s got completely ripped to play a boxer in the movie.

Eminem is still involved though as a producer and it was through his Youtube that the trailer was released.

Jake Gyllenhaal Is Super-Ripped & Shirtless In The First Pic From Southpaw

November 29, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jake-gyllenhaal-southpawIt looks like Jake Gyllenhaal is bidding to join the Robert De Niro and Christian Bale club of actors who are happy to completely transform they body for a role. Sfter losing huge amounts of weight for Nightcrawler, he’s now turned his torso into a vascular mass of rippling muscles for Southpaw.

The first pic has arrived via Deadline, which seems deliberately designed to make us goggle at the 15 pounds of pure muscle the actor packed on for the movie.

Oddly though, if everything had gone to the original plan, this wouldn’t be a pic of Gyllenhaal, it would be Eminem, as when it went into development it was designed as a boxing film that was an allegory for the rapper’s own life.

However that all changed and now it’s Jake who is ‘Junior Middleweight Champion Billy “The Great” Hope, a lefty champ who loses everything in a personal tragedy and is forced to fight his way to redemption.’

Rachel McAdams, Forest Whitaker, 50 Cent and Naomie Harris co-star with Antoine Fuqua directing. Southpaw will be in cinemas sometime next year.

Lupita Nyong’o & Rachel McAdams Up To Join Jake Gyllenhaal In Southpaw

May 15, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Lupita-NyongoSouthpaw started out as a vehicle for Eminem and it was sold as a vaguely metaphorical looking at his life through boxing. While that idea fell through the film lived on Eminem’s departure, and last November  Jake Gyllenhaal attached himself to the lead role.

Now the movie is further coming together as Deadline reports that Rachel McAdams, Lupita Nyong’o and Forest Whitaker are being courted for the movie, which Antoine Fuqua is set to direct.

The film is about a boxer who wins a welterweight title and then suffers a tragedy, forcing him to put his life back together to earn his young daughter’s respect. Nyong’o is set to be a social worker who cares for Gyllenhaal’s daughter, with the presumption being that McAdams will be the love interest as she’s described as the female lead.

Southpaw has certainly been through the Hollywood miller as it first came together at DreamWorks, before moving to Sony, MGM and now The Weinstein Company.

Fuqua is set to direct from a screenplay by Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter. Production is slated to begin sometime next year.
