Star Trek: Discovery Trailer – The franchise is coming back to TV, but it’s looking very different

July 23, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After several delays which have meant it won’t be released until almost a year after it was originally due, Star Trek: Discovery is on its way, starting on September 25th. To tie in with its ppearance at Comic Con, a trailer has been released, which shows this is not like the TV Star Trek we’ve seen before.

It’s big, it’s expensive, it’s explosive and has a much more intense and dangerous feel than earlier incarnations of the franchise. It’s not too surprising, as those behind the show have often spoken of how thye were breaking the mould, such as having an ongoing plot rather than completely separate instalments, and that it would allow major characters to disagree and dislike each other, which rarely happened in earlier shows.

While some purists are likely to be upset, there are a few nods to them, such as the appearance from classic Original Series character Harry Mudd (Rainn Wilson), who will be a recurring character in the show. Largely though, it concentrates on Sonequa Martin-Green as Michael Green (who will be the central character), Jason Isaacs as Captain Lorca and Michelle Yeoh as Captain Georgiou.

The show will also feature Star Trek’s first regular gay character, an astro-botanist played by Anthony Rapp. However, he doesn’t feature much in the trailer.

The show will begin streaming on CBS All Access in the US, and Netflix in the rest of the world, starting on Spetember 25th. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Michelle Yeoh & Sonequa Martin-Green Appear In First Look At Star Trek: Discovery

May 17, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

If all had gone to the original plan, we’d have already seen the first episodes of Discovery, Paramount’s first foray in TV Star Trek since Enterprise went off air in 2005. However, various delays mean it won’t be arriving until later this year (no exact date has been announced yet).

With TV companies currently shopping their latest wares to potential advertisers and the media, the first character picture from the new Star Trek series has arrived, giving us our first glimpse at Michelle Yeoh‘s Captain Philippa Georgiou and Sonequa Martin-Green‘s First Officer Michael Burnham. Not too much is known about how they fit into the overall plot, but Burham is the First Officer on a ship called Discovery, while Georgiou commands another ship.

It has been said that the show is seen through the eyes of a female character who isn’t a captain, so it may be that it’s Martin-Green who is the focus of the show. Others involved include Jason Isaacs as Discovery’s captain, and Doug Jones playing a science officer who’s a member of an alien species new to the Star Trek universe. Also onboard is Anthony Rapp as astromycologist Lt. Stamets, who will be Star Trek’s first regular gay character.

Star Trek: Discovery will be released via CBS: All Access in the US, and Netflix in the rest of the world.

George Takei Thinks Star Trek: Discovery’s Gay Character Is How It ‘Should Have Been Done’

December 13, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Earlier this year George Takei let it be known that he wasn’t too impressed with Star Trek Beyond revealing that in that incarnation if the Trek universe, Sulu is married to a guy. In Takei’s thinking, the character had always been straight in the Original Series and movies, and so making him gay, even in an alternate timeline, wasn’t right.

At the time, he said he would welcome more LGBT representation in the franchise, but felt it should be done with a new character. He’s very happy then, that in the upcoming Star Trek: Discovery, Anthony Rapp will be playing a major gay character.

Last Saturday Takei was presented with the ICON Award at the Unforgettable Gala, which honors Asians in entertainment. There he said (via Variety) of Rapp’s character, “I’m eager to see him.”

He added, “When I was informed they were making Sulu gay, I said, ‘It’s wonderful that they can deal with the gay issue. But honor Gene. It’s not about me. It’s about Gene’s vision and respect him and respect the characters that he created.’ But be as imaginative and creative as Gene was., Create a new character and make him or her gay with the issues he or she might have to deal with in the 23rd century. That would be exciting. That would be paying tribute.”

Instead, “…They made Sulu gay. They said it was a tribute to me, so I appreciate that part. But now Gene is really going to be honored by Star Trek: Discovery having that original character, played by a wonderfully talented actor. I think it is the way it should’ve been done.”

Not too much is known about Rapp’s character, other than that he called called Lt. Stamets, ‘an astromycologist, fungus expert and Starfleet science officer on the starship Discovery’. The show will debut next May.

Anthony Rapp To Play Gay Lead Character In Star Trek: Discovery

November 30, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

anthony-rappThey’re finally starting to pull the cast together for the upcoming Star Trek: Discovery. Things have been delayed a little, as originally the first episodes were due out in January, but not they’re expected some time in May 2017. So who will be heading to the set? Well, it’s been revealed that Michelle Yeoh and Doug Jones have both been cast, as has Rent’s Anthony Rapp, who will be playing the majot gay character co-creator Bryan Fuller announced would be part of the show back in August.

The official Star Trek website confirms that, ‘Jones will play Lt. Saru, a Starfleet science officer and an alien species new to the Star Trek universe. He is a respected actor with a large following of sci-fi and horror fans as a result of his creature performances in the likes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Hellboy, Legion, Pan’s Labyrinth and The Strain.

‘Yeoh is set to play Captain Georgiou, the Starfleet captain aboard the starship Shenzhou. She is an internationally known actress and action star whose many credits include Tomorrow Never Dies and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

‘Rapp will beam aboard as Lt. Stamets, an astromycologist, fungus expert and Starfleet science officer on the starship Discovery. He is best known for his stage work in such Broadway productions as Rent, You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown and If/Then, and also counts among his films credits School Ties, A Beautiful Mind and Rent.’

Some had though that when Yeoh was first rumoured a few days ago, she would be the show’s main character, as Fuller had said the show would be seen through a female character’s eyes, who won’t be the captain. However it doesn’t appear Yeoh will be that character, unless the announcement she’s the captain of another starship hides the fact she’s end up on the Discovery and no longer a captain.

Not too much more is known about Rapp’s character, although it has been confirmed that Stamets will be gay. Whether he’s in a relationship isn’t known, or indeed how his sexuality will figure into the series. We’ll have to wait another six months to find out!

The series will be available to stream via CBS: All Access in US and Netflix in the rest of the world next May.

Star Trek: Discovery Will Have An Openly Gay Character & A Female Lead

August 11, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

star-trek-discoveryFor the first 50 years of its existence, Star Trek pushed to boundaries on things such as race, but it never had an on-screen gay character. That’s certainly changing, with John Cho’s Sulu revealed to have a husband in Star Trek Beyond, and now it’s been revealed there will be a gay character in the new TV series, Star Trek: Discovery.

The show, which will air on CBS: All Access in the US and Netflix in the rest of the world, has been outing promoting itself at with a Television Critics Association panel, where showrunner Bryan Fuller (Pushing Daisies, Hannibal) was asked about the possibility of a homosexual character. He replied, “absolutely we’re having a gay character.”

It was one thing Fuller was apparently adamant about, as he worked on Star Trek: Voyager, and still has a folder of the hate mail they got when it was rumoured Jeri Ryan’s character, Seven Of Nine, was going to be a lesbian. Talking about the progress made since then thanks to the likes of Will & Grace, he added, “I think we’ve come a long way since then; gay rights have come a lot further in that time than racial issues and women’s issues.”

Women’s issues are also something the new show may put centre stage, as it was also revealed that the lead character on the show would be a woman, although unlike earlier Star Trek series, the main character won’t be the captain of the ship. Instead it will be a subordinate, likely to be a Lt. Commander. The show will take place 10 years before the original series, and will be set in the same timeline as the earlier television series, rather than the Kelvin timeline of the recent movies. Discovery – Season 1 is due to be released next year.
