Director Marc Webb Coming Back For The Amazing Spider-Man 3

February 26, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

amazing-spider-man-2-poster5Marc Webb jumped up the Hollywood food chain with The Amazing Spider-man, and while he agreed to sign on for a second Spidey movie, it wasn’t known if he would be interested in making more. However now Variety reports that Webb has been confirmed to The Amazing Spider-Man 3, which is already set for release on June 10, 2016.

Amazing Spider-Man 2 writers Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Jeff Pinkner are returning to write the script for the third adventure, with Matthew Tolmach and Avi Arad producing.

Andrew Garfield is already contracted to be back as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, and last October is was reported that Paul Giamatti will return as Aleksei Sytsevich aka. The Rhino. Chris Cooper, who plays Norman Osborn in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, has also hinted that he will be in part three. However no other cast members have been confirmed.

With Spider-man becoming a lynchpin for Sony Pictures (to the point where some investors feel they’re relying on it too much and ought to find some other major franchise) they are also expanding the Spider-Man universe, with The Sinister Six and Venom spin-offs. It’s believed they hope to release a Spidey related movie every year.

Mary Jane Watson Cut From The Amazing Spider-Man 2

June 20, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

shailene-woodleyWhile Mary Jane Watson wasn’t in The Amazing Spider-man, she was supposed to be in the sequel, with Descendants star Shailene Woodley taking the role. However it now appears her scenes have been cut.

Entertainment Weekly recently spoke with actress Woodley about her role in the upcoming YA adaptation Divergent, and it was actress herself who revealed that she has been bumped from The Amazing Spider-Man 2. She says, “Of course I’m bummed. But I’m a firm believer in everything happening for a specific reason….based on the proposed plot, I completely understand holding off on introducing (Mary Jane) until the next film.”

Woodley’s role in the movie was only going to be small – indeed she only shot for three days on the movie – leading into an expanded role in Amazing Spider-man 3.

Director Marc Webb comments, “I made a creative decision to streamline the story and focus on Peter and Gwen and their relationship. Shailene is an incredibly talented actress, and while we only shot a few scenes with Mary Jane, we all love working with her.”

While the character of Mary Jane Watson is still expected to appear in the third adventure, it appears she may be recast and that Woodley is out. Indeed, some are speculating that with Sony wanting Spidey movies in 2014, 2016 and 2018, potential conflicts with Woodley’s schedule on Divergent and any sequels to that movie are behind why she’s been dropped from the second Spider-man film and will be recast for the third and fourth. We’ll have to wait and see whether Woodley does indeed get replaced.

Sony Officially Announces The Amazing Spider-Man 3 & 4

June 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

amazing-spider-man-2-suitThe Amazing Spider-man 2 may not arrive in cinemas until May 2nd next year, but Sony obviously has a lot of confidence in it – as well as their ability to turn it into an on-going story – as they’ve already set release dates for The Amazing Spider-man 3 & 4.

Jeff Blake, Chairman, Worldwide Marketing and Distribution for Sony Pictures, announced that the next two films in the story of Peter Parker will be released on June 10, 2016, and on May 4, 2018, respectively. That’ll certainly keep Andrew Garfield busy.

Commenting on the announcement, Blake said, “Spider-Man is our most important, most successful, and most beloved franchise, so we’re thrilled that we are in a position to lock in these prime release dates over the next five years.”

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci & Jeff Pinkner, with a previous draft by James Vanderbilt. It’s not known if any of them are working on the new sequels, although it is believed Vanderbilt was originally hired with a plan for a series of Spidey film. However, as his script was taken over by others, they may no longer be following his ideas.
