After five very entertaining episodes the first season of Alicia J. Rose’s The Benefits of Gusbandry comes to an end with Episode 6, which sees gay River and straight Jackie dealing with their exes. It turns out River isn’t Jackie’s first gusband (gay husband) and River has previously had another swife (straight wife), and running into them is bound to be awkward.

Over the course of the season, the duo have become friends very fast, but it turns out they’ve still got a bit to learn about one another. As they find out, they have at least one thing in common that they probably wish that they didn’t. Throw in some medical marijuana and an art show where the past keeps crawling out of the woodwork, and there’s a perfect storm for both River and Jackie to have a very difficult time.

The gay-straight BFF relationship between Jackie and River continues to bloom in the fourth episode of The Benefits of Gusbandry. But how did they get to be the people they are?

Well, River’s sweaty pits and some pot brownies result in them reminiscing about high school, where River (who had a very good beard for a teenager according to this episode) had his first female friend who knew he was gay, while Jackie had her own ‘gateway gay’.

The notes for the show add, ‘Inspired by real-life relationships with creator Alicia J. Rose’s own “Gusbands” (a.k.a: gay best friends), The Benefits of Gusbandry centers around best friends Jackie, played by Brooke Totman (MADtv, The Groundlings) and River, played by Kurt Conroyd (Birds of Neptune, Fox Searchlight’s Wild) – two one-of-a-kind characters approaching 40 and follows them as they find something special in one another, navigating the modern world with a no-punches-pulled and occasionally filthy comedic purview, finding true love in a most unexpectedly platonic way.’

A lot of you seemed to enjoy the first couple of episodes of The Benefits of Gusbandry, which we posted last month, and now it’s time for the two-part episode three, which you can watch below. If you’re still wondering what ‘gusbandry’ is, it’s a ‘gay husband’, which is what Jackie accidentally got after she went on what she thought was a date, but which the guy thought was just about friendship as he’s gay. Luckily they discovered they had a lot on common.

In Part 1 of Episode 3, ‘River and Jackie make a pact to swap places in the dating world and make each other over for their new online profiles’. In Part 2 ‘River and Jackie go on their dates and wind up deepening their friendship in some unexpectedly tawdry ways.’
