The Maze Runner (Blu-ray Review)

February 8, 2015 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Starring: Dylan O'Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Will Poulter, Ki Hong Lee, Aml Ameen
Director: Wes Ball
Running Time: 108 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: February 9th 2015

After the success of The Hunger Games it’s not too surprising that Hollywood rushed to put similarly themed movies into production, such as Divergent and now The Maze Runner.  While nearly all the knock-offs of Twilight, and indeed Harry Potter, were pretty rubbish, The Maze Runner isn’t bad at all.

Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) wakes up in a metal cage that’s rising out of the ground. He has no idea who he is or how he got there but finds himself thrust into the strange world of The Glade, where every month for three years a new young man has arrived, also with no idea what they’re doing there. A society led by Gally (Will Poulter) has arisen, bound by rules supposed to keep them alive. [Read more…]

Director: Wes Ball
Running Time: 113 mins
Certificate: 12A
Release Date: October 10th 2014 (UK)

With any teen action/fantasy film, there are always going to be comparisons to the very obvious Twilight, Divergent and the box office Phenomenon that is The Hunger Games – all film franchises adapted from highly acclaimed books aimed initially at the teen market.

Like many of these successful franchises, The Maze Runner is a trilogy also with prequel to follow, this one written by James Dashner.

The plot? Well to no real surprise, again we have a lead character thrown into a situation out of their control, where they have to battle against all odds for survival using sheer willpower and strength of character – also seen in past classics Lord Of the Flies and Battle Royale. [Read more…]

New The Maze Runner Trailer – Dylan O’Brien is thrust into the heart of a labyrinth

July 29, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Maze-Runner-Poster2-slideA lot of people have been overlooking The Maze Runner, viewing it as simply one more young adult novel adaptation to ass to the list of films that slip past with few people paying much attention. However reports coming out of Comic Con suggest it could actually be something a bit more interesting.

That’s certainly backed up by this new trailer, which looks surprisingly cool and intense, and seems to have learned lessons from Hunger Games that you can get away with being quite dark.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Based on the best-selling young adult thriller, THE MAZE RUNNER is set in a post-apocalyptic world, where Thomas is deposited in a community of young men after his memory is erased. After learning they’re all trapped in a maze, Thomas joins forces with fellow “runners” to not only escape the maze, but solve its riddle and reveal the chilling secret of who brought them there, and why.’

Dylan O’Brien, Will Poulter, Kaya Scodelaria, Thomas Brodie-Sangster and Patricia Clarkson star. It’ll be out in cinemas in October. [Read more…]

The Maze Runner Gets The World’s Most Literal Poster, Featuring Dylan O’Brien & Will Poulter

July 28, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Maze-Runner-Poster2People around the world have probably been wondering what The Maze Runner is all about, so 20th Century Fox has come up with a poster to make things clear – in the movie there will be a maze, and people will do some running. Who would have thought?

It’s actually not a bad image though, even if it does seem a little to literal for our tastes.

Dylan O’Brien And More In First Images From The Maze Runner

July 3, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

maze-runner-pic1
Things are getting a bit literal in these first images from The Maze Runner, as they mainly seem designed to show that it’s set in a maze and involves some running. However they do give us an idea of young adult novel adaptation, which stars Dylan O’Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Will Poulter, Thomas Brodie-Sangster and Patricia Clarkson.

Teen Wolf’s O’Brien plays Thomas, who wakes up in a strange place known as The Glade, with no recollection of how he got there. He must work together with a group of teenagers, who also don’t remember how they ended up in there, to figure a way out – every morning a door opens and they attempt to work out the riddle of the maze that lies beyond. Things get even more complex when the first girl (Kaye Scodelario) turns up in The Glade, with a message that could change everything.

A February 14th, 2014 release date has already set. (Images via MTV)

The Maze Runner Concept Art Has The Glade Looking Pretty Epic

May 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

maze-runner-concept-art
The Maze Runner is one of the young adult adaptations that’s rushing to fill the hole left by the end of Twilight, and on the evidence of the first piece of concept art that’s been released (via EW), it’s going to look pretty cool. It’s certainly an impressive looking stone labyrinth.

Teen Wolf’s Dylan O’Brien will portray Thomas, who wakes up in a strange place known as The Glade, with no recollection of how he got there. He must work together with a group of teenagers, who also don’t remember how they ended up in there, to figure a way out – every morning a door opens and they attempt to figure out the riddle of the maze that lies beyond. Things get even more complex when the first girl (Kaye Scodelario) turns up in The Glade, with a message that could change everything.

Commenting on the image, “It was for me, really. I like writing images,” says director Wes Ball, who previously worked as a special effects designer. “I started daydreaming about what it’s like to be at those doors and looking up at those walls.”

Thomas Sangster, Will Poulter, Aml Ameen, and Kaya Scodelario are co-starring. A February 14th, 2014 release date has already set.

Teen Wolf’s Dylan O’Brien Takes The Lead In The Maze Runner

April 19, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Dylan-OBrien-teen-wolfThe cast of The Maze Runner has been steadily growing in the last few weeks, but its been missing its main character. That’s now been remedied, as Deadline reports that Teen Wolf star Dylan O’Brien has landed the part.

The actor will portray Thomas, who wakes up in a strange place known as The Glade, with no recollection of how he got there. He must work together with a group of teenagers, who also don’t remember how they ended up in there, to figure a way out – every morning a door opens and they attempt to figure out the riddle of the maze that lies beyond. Things get even more complex when the first girl turns up in The Glade, with a message that could change everything.

Thomas Sangster, Will Poulter, Aml Ameen, and Kaya Scodelario are co-starring. Wes Ball is directing from a script by Noah Oppenheim, with rewrites by Grant Myers and T.S. Nowlin. Production is scheduled to begin in Baton Rouge, Louisiana this May. A February 14th, 2014 release date has already set by Fox.

Will Poulter Offered Lead In Maze Runner Adaptation

March 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

will-poulterThose in the US may recognise Will Poulter from The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, but us Brits may well have seen him in the likes of Son Of Ranbow, Wild Bill and even TV’s School Of Comedy.

Now 21-years-old, he’s long shown a lot of promise, which may be coming to fruition, as we’ll see him later this year opposite Jennifer Aniston in We’re The Millers, and now Deadline reports that he’s circling the lead in the planned adaptation of James Dashner’s young adult novel, The Maze Runner.

The Maze Runner is the first book in James Dashner’s sci-fi trilogy. The story follows a boy named Thomas who wakes up in a strange place called the Glade with no memory aside from his first name. The Glade is an enclosed structure populated by other boys, and is surrounded by tall, stone walls that protect them from monsters called Grievers that live in the Maze, which surrounds them.

Every day, some of the kids, known as Runners, venture into the labyrinth trying to map the ever-changing pattern of walls in an attempt to find an exit. As soon as Thomas arrives, unusual things begin to happen and the others grow suspicious of him. The Maze seems familiar to Thomas, but he’s unable to make sense of the place despite his extraordinary abilities as a Runner. When the first girl arrives in the Glade, she brings a message that she will be the last one to ever arrive in the Glade, as the end is near.

The book has been compared to The Hunger Games and Divergent, so there are big hopes for the film version, and if it succeeds it could certainly give Poulter’s career a big bump – assuming he signs on, of course.
