The Wizard of Oz Going 3D In 2013 For Warner’s 90th Anniversary

October 4, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Although there have been quite a few 3D conversions in the last few years, they’ve nearly all been of fairly modern movies. However now Warner Bros. is planning to celebrate its 90th anniversary next year (it was established April 4th, 1923) by bringing 1939’s The Wizard Of Oz to cinemas and Blu-ray with a third dimension added.

The film is currently being restored and will be released on Blu-ray 3D in either September or October of next year, with a cinema release mooted for shortly before that. The studio also announced a number of massive Blu-ray and DVD collections to celebrate their diverse catalogue.

Warner Bros. boasts the largest film library in the world – 6,800 feature films. The library includes 22 Academy Award-winning Best Pictures (the most in Oscar history), and leading franchises such as Harry Potter, Batman, The Lord of the Rings, The Matrix and Superman.

Although the announcements only currently confirm US releases, hopefully they’ll all come to the UK too.

New to Blu-ray titles will inclide The Jazz Singer, all three James Dean films (East of Eden, Rebel Without a Cause, Giant), Cabaret and Academy Award Best Picture Winners Grand Hotel (1932), Mrs. Miniver (1943), and Driving Miss Daisy (1990). There’ll also be The Best of Warner Bros. 100 Film DVD Collection, which includes all 22 of Warner Bros. library’s Best Picture Winners and two new documentaries, on 55 discs presented in book style premium packaging. The Best of Warner Bros. 50 Film Blu-ray Collection includes 50 movies and the two new documentaries on 52 discs. It will introduce several new-to-Blu-ray film titles, including Grand Hotel, Mrs. Miniver, and Driving Miss Daisy.

There will also be various other collection, including a Superman box set encompassing both the films and TV series Warner has made, and a big box featuring most of Clint Eastwood’s directorial output. (Source: THR)
