The zombie apocalypse has left the humans fighting against a horde of shambling corpses. R (Nicholas Hoult) is one of those zombies, except he’s beginning to wonder if there’s more to life than stumbling about groaning. When he ‘meets’ Julie (Teresa Palmer), a beautiful human survivor, R falls in love. He sets about trying to charm her, as best a rotting corpse can, and soon finds he’s undergoing more than just a change of heart.
The first zombie films had a message to deliver, the same is true here. But on top of this, Warm Bodies is refreshing, original, and one of the wittiest films you’ll find. [Read more…]
Despite the box office usually being fairly open over the Oscar weekend, it was a particularly bad time for new movies, as the Dwayne Johnson action flick Snitch just missed out on the top spot, taking $13 million to place second. That allowed Identity Thief to return to the top, adding another $14 million, to take its total so far in American to $93 million.
Despite some truly atrocious reviews, audiences’ love of John McLane won out over the weekend, with the movie topping the US box office with $25 million from Friday to Sunday and $33 million since it was released last Thursday.
The Melissa McCarthy and Jason Bateman grossout comedy Identity Thief may have been faced with some vitriolic reviews, but US audiences obviously didn’t care as the film significantly outperformed expectations, taking $36.5 million in its first three days in cinemas. It’s one of the best starts ever for an R-rated comedy, suggesting the film should have strong legs over the coming weeks.
Nobody seemed sure quite how well Warm Bodies would do at the US box office, but it turns out audiences were up for some zombie fun over the Superbowl weekend, as the Nicholas Hoult starring movie took $20 million in its first weekend to top the chart. It’s considered a pretty good opening for a relatively cheap movie that could easily have been ignored.
From the producers of Paranormal Activity, Insidious, and Sinister comes Dark Skies: a supernatural thriller that follows a young family living in the suburbs. As husband and wife Daniel and Lacey Barret (Keri Russell and Josh Hamilton) witness an escalating series of disturbing events involving their family, their safe and peaceful home quickly unravels. When it becomes clear that the Barret family is being targeted by an unimaginably terrifying and deadly force, Daniel and Lacey take matters in their own hands to solve the mystery of what is after their family.’
It’s heroes vs. villains in this new GI Joe: Retaliation poster. Channing Tatum (Duke) Bruce Willis (Joe Colton), Dwayne Johnson (Roadblock), Adrianne Palicki (Lady Jaye), and Ray Park (Snake Eyes) represent the good guys, with Ray Stevenson (Firefly), Byung-hun Lee (Storm Shadow), and Elodie Yung (Jinx) on the baddies side. The 3D movie hits cinemas in March.
R (Nicholas Hoult) is a zombie. After a zombie apocalypse, he shambles across an America filled with collapsed buildings, rusted cars, shattered windows, and abandoned high-rises. He can only grunt or moan and craves human brains to get high on their memories. After eating the brains of a suicidal teen, R is overcome with love for the teen’s companion, Julie Grigio (Palmer). R rescues Julie from his zombie pack and takes her back to his lair. She eventually leaves, and R follows her back to Citi Stadium, the largest remaining human refuge. It hits cinemas February 8th.
Steven Sobderbergh lines another star-filled thriller, this one with Rooney Mara, Channing Tatum, Jude Law and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Side Effects is about a woman (Mara) who turns to prescription medication to deal with her anxiety over her husband’s (Tatum) release from prison. She begins to take a new brand of anti-depressant, prescribed by a doctor (Jude Law), who seems to have more than a professional interest in her. Before long, everything spirals badly out of control, when it appears a murder has been committed. The film is set for release in the UK on March 15th, 2013
