Does Disney’s Zootropolis Feature A Married Gay Couple?

May 11, 2016 By Tim Isaac 2 Comments

zootropolis-quad-slideThere’s been a bit of a movement online recently that in the sequel to Frozen, Disney should give Elsa a girlfriend, following many years os people pointing at that while animation has gotten slowly more diverse, Disney’s output has remained pretty heterosexual (although there was a brief hint in Frozen that sauna owner Oaken was gay). However, now a Reddit thread suggests that there’s decent evidence that the House Of Mouse may have included a married gay couple in the recently released Zootropolis (known as Zootopia in the US).

In the movie, the young rabbit hero, Judy Hopps, moves to a city full of animals in the hope of becoming the first bunny to become a police officer. In her new apartment, she has two noisy antelope neighbours called Bucky and Pronk. While the movie is far from explicit – and the characters could have just been roommates – there is one strong hint they are actually married.

While there has previously been suggestions that they are gay, there hasn’t been a huge amount of evidence, but a viewer spotted that in the credits they are listed as Bucky Oryx-Antlerson and Pronk Oryx-Antlerson. That could mean they are brothers, but the double-barelling of the surname is suggestive that they’ve actually a couple. It is all pretty subtle and far from the more open LGBT characters in the likes of Paranorman, but it is perhaps at least a small step in the right direction.

New Zootropolis Trailer & Clips – Take your best look yet at Disney’s city full of animals

January 30, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

zootropolis-slideWhile we’ve had a couple of promos for Disney’s Zootropolis (which in the US is called, Zootopia, but for some reason has a slight name change in the UK), they’ve more been extended clips than anything else. However, we’ve now got a proper trailer as well as some more clips.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The modern mammal metropolis of Zootropolis is a city like no other. Comprised of habitat neighborhoods like ritzy Sahara Square and frigid Tundratown, it’s a melting pot where animals from every environment live together—a place where no matter what you are, from the biggest elephant to the smallest shrew, you can be anything. But when optimistic Officer Judy Hopps (voice of Ginnifer Goodwin) arrives, she discovers that being the first bunny on a police force of big, tough animals isn’t so easy.

‘Determined to prove herself, she jumps at the opportunity to crack a case, even if it means partnering with a fast-talking, scam-artist fox, Nick Wilde (voice of Jason Bateman), to solve the mystery. Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Zootropolis,” a comedy-adventure directed by Byron Howard (“Tangled,” “Bolt”) and Rich Moore (“Wreck-It Ralph,” “The Simpsons”) and co-directed by Jared Bush (“Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero”).

The movie will be in UK cinemas in March. [Read more…]

Zootopia Trailer – Sloths take their time in Disney’s world of talking animal movie

November 23, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

zootopia-trailer-slideWe had a teaser for Disney’s Zootopia a few months ago, but that didn’t really tell us a huge amount the movie. Now we get a little more, with a trailer which is essentially an extended clip from the film. It gives us a taste of the plot, and also let’s us know that in a world of talking animals, sloths aren’t the animals to talk to if you want a speedy response.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The modern mammal metropolis of Zootropolis is a city like no other. Zootopia Teaser Trailer – First footage from the Disney animation

June 11, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

zootopia-character-pic1-slideYesterday we posted the first image from Disney’s Zootopia, and now that’s been followed by a teaser trailer that introduces us to more of the movie’s animal society, although here they seem to exist in some sort of Matrix training zone.

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Zootropolis,” a comedy-adventure directed by Byron Howard (“Tangled,” “Bolt”) and Rich Moore (“Wreck-It Ralph,” “The Simpsons”) and co-directed by Jared Bush (“Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero”), opens in cinemas Spring, 2016.

“It’s a nod to the great Disney animated animal films we all grew up with, but with a funny, contemporary twist,” said director Rich Moore (“Wreck-It Ralph,” “The Simpsons”).” Our artists and animators did tons of research to integrate true animal behaviours into each of our characters. The world of Zootropolis is fantastic, infused with international flavour that will be relatable to everyone.”’ [Read more…]

First Proper Look At Disney’s Animated Zootopia

June 10, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

zootopia-character-pic1This year we’re getting two Pixar films, but to make room for that Disney animation has no big summer or autumn movie this year, but they’re gearing up for a March 2016 release on Zootopia.

While there’s been some concept art released before, now Disney has brought us the first proper picture of the two main characters, a fox and a rabbit, which, as you can probably tell, live in a highly anthropomorphised world.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In the animal city of Zootopia, a fast-talking fox who’s trying to make it big goes on the run when he’s framed for a crime he didn’t commit. Zootopia’s top cop, a self-righteous rabbit, is hot on his tail, but when both become targets of a conspiracy, they’re forced to team up and discover even natural enemies can become best friends.’
