Youthful Daze Web Series Reveals Lead Character Is Gay In Latest Episode

June 4, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The web series Youthful Daze is well into its Second Season but it’s still got a few surprised in store, as in the latest episode it’s been revealed that one of the lead characters is gay.

As the press release says, ‘It’s a new school year at Westfield Prep, and when Tommy Dinato (Ethan Daniel Corbett) comes back to town, it’s clear that he has a past with Drew Castle (Bryan James). Not until a heated argument turns into a heated make out session do we learn that their history is a romantic one. No one knows about their relationship or the fact that either of them might be gay. But since the whole thing is caught on a camera phone, their secret might not be safe for long. The storyline continues with new episodes every Sunday night on www.YouthfulDaze.com.’

Creator Bryan James comments, “Creating and expanding a teen drama series world into a larger scope for season two it only seemed logical to develop story lines that could reach a wider audience and to tell stories that are powerful about love in all forms. Everyone on Youthful Daze is committed to telling long term storylines about love that exists between male characters. We hope the audience will embrace the show and enjoy all aspects of the series. It is time for more good shows to become easily available to a under served demographic that does not pander to or label it’s gay characters as supporting parts with little to do and tells gay storylines front and center the same in a genre that should showcase the straight storylines and the gay ones with no hang ups or discrimination in execution. We are a soap opera that has something for everyone.”

Take A Look At An Hour Of Footage From The Gay Rights Fight Of The 70s

June 3, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x0lGI9gBxzk

There was Stonewall in 1969 and then the AIDS epidemic in the early 80s, but for many people the history of gay rights in between those seminal moments is a bit of a mystery. However what happened in the 70s is vital to moving from gay sex being illegal to more and more places allowing same sex marriage.

Now you can get a great overview of what happened in terms of the gay rights battle in the 1970s in the US – from the odious homophobia of the likes of Anita Bryant to the emergence of a previously unthinkable sexual freedom – via 70 minutes of TV clips from that era.

It also features fascinating footage from some of the very first gay pride marches, battles over anti-gay ballot measures and the assassination of Harvey Milk.

It’s a great way to learn about both what was happening back then, as well as the way way the media dealt with homosexuality – normally with a great deal of discomfort or by treating gay people as if they were conducting a scientific investigation into Martians.

Brothers Episode 1 – The web series about four trans men debuts and is looking for funding

June 2, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In the past few years there have been some big changes for trans people, not least that social and technological changes (not least social media) have made it easier for them to tell their own stories and control their own narratives, rather than it having to be filtered though non-Trans media.

Even so, trans people in fiction still tend to be written, directed and even plated by cisgender people. Brothers is a bit different, as the web series is the brainchild of trans writer/director Emmett Lundberg, with the main four men the show is about, all played by trans guys.

The premiere episode has now been released, which you can watch above. To get the other seven eps of the first season in the can, the show has launched an Indiegogo campaign, with the hope of raising $60,000. You can read a little more about the show below, then head to Indiegogo to help out.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Meet Jack, Davyn, Aiden and Max.

‘Jack, a transgender man living in Brooklyn, has recently started sleeping with a cisgender* man after exclusively dating women his entire adult life. His friend Davyn is on the verge of proposing to his longtime girlfriend, Amy. Aiden, the youngest of the group – pre-testosterone and pre-surgery – is aiming to raise money for his top surgery as the date approaches. Max, the eldest, has been on hormones longer than both Jack and Davyn, but hasn’t had the financial resources to obtain his top surgery.

‘There is a definite lack of trans masculine stories being told; stories that reflect us and the people we know. This is where you come in. BROTHERS follows the daily lives, the ups and down, ins and outs of what it means to live as a transgender individual in today’s urban society.

‘Do you know a Davyn? Are you an Aiden? These are our friends, our teachers, our coworkers, our husbands, our BROTHERS.’

Caught Inside Short Documentary – Looking at the taboo of being a gay surfer

May 31, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

What’s it like to be in the ‘manly’ world of surfing, but to be gay? Despite the stereotype of it surfing being filled with chilled out dude, the short documentary Caught Inside suggests it’s still a place where homosexuality is rarely spoken about.

The seven-minute doc follows ‘ three gay surfers who have all recently come out in a sub-culture where they say homosexuality is still a taboo.’

It’s an interesting subject and one that should be more fully explored in the upcoming Out In The Lineup, which completed a successful Kickstarter campaign at the end of last year. That doc follows two gay surfers as they travel the world finding the best waves.

My Gay Roommate – Season 3, Ep 4: Touched By An Angel – What happened after the coming out?

May 7, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

At the end of Season 3, Episode 3 of My Gay Roommate, there was a bit of a surprise when one of the characters came out and pounced on our intrepid homo hero Nick.

Now it’s time to see what happened next, which starts out with a bit of morning after glow.

But how will Nick’s new roomie Ed handle the fact that his room-mate and his cowboy friend are now bum chums?

There’s a bit of tension, but there’s also plenty of time for silliness, the slightly surreal and an appearance by Tony Award Winner Wilson Jermaine Heredia.

SCISSR: A Lesbian Web Series Pilot Episode – Four lesbians. Twelve relationships. One iPhone app

May 6, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3nQ8_13ZRY

The pilot episode of the lesbian-themed web series web series SCISSR has arrived, which you can watch right here.

Creator Lauren Augarten told us, ‘As the creator of SCISSR: A Lesbian Web Series, which stars trans actress Jamie Clayton (who was in Out Magazine’s top 100, 2011) I wanted to let you know that we’ve just launched our pilot episode online. This is her first role playing a cisgender character. As well as Jamie, the show stars three lesbian actresses. It was just accepted into the LA New Media Film Festival, where it will have it’s theatrical premier in May. ‘

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Aviva, Corey, Emily and Niamh are four twenty-something lesbians from very different backgrounds.  Aviva (Lauren Augarten) has just come out and is hoping to connect with the other lesbians online, while Corey (Paulina Singer) has just gone through a traumatic breakup and is ready to swear off women altogether and Emily (Kelly Sebastian) is constantly looking for the next best thing. Navigating life and love in Brooklyn is easy for none of them, but when they meet through an iPhone app, the girls realize they have much more in common than they originally thought.’

It’s interesting to have Clayton in a cisgender role, especially considering the controversy over cis actors such as Jared Leto in Dallas Buyers Club playing trans roles. So should we be aiming for a complete mix where cis can play trans and vice versa, or should actors have to stick to one or the other? Any thoughts? [Read more…]

Not Looking Episode 5 – The first season of gay-themed web series comes to an end

April 8, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Not Looking started out as a one-off parody on HBO’s Looking, but thankfully they quickly realised it would be worth turning into a series. The results has been that over the last few weeks we’ve had great fun Drew Droege, Justin Martindale and Jason Looney as they deal with the vagaries of gay life.

Now it’s time for the final episode of the first season.

As with episode four, there’s time for another cameo from Lance Bass, along with a few laughs. A few plot strands get tied up, but enough is left open if they decide to make Season 2 – and let’s hope they do.

Hollywoodland Gay Web Series – Willam Belli and co. can’t find anything to like

April 4, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We all know a gay or two who is an expert on what they don’t like and why, and where nothing is beyond dissection to say exactly why it’s terrible, despite what the rest of the world might think.

That’s taken to the extreme in the first episode of the new gay-themed web series Hollywoodland, from writer/director Joseph Baken.

This episode is described as being ‘One sketch in a series about the people who live in Hollywood’. This one features Baken alongside Willam Belli, Michael Airington, and Justin Kelly, playing a group of gay friends who are pretty much incapable of doing anything, simply because there’s nothing that they like – even their own kid’s dance recital.

Take a look at the episode above. [Read more…]
