Crush Of The Day: Xavier Samuel

August 29, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Aussie actor Xavier Samuel hits UK cinemas on Friday in A Few Good Men, so it’s a perfect time for a bit of photo retrospective. Before he found Hollywood success playing Riley in Twilight: Eclipse, Xavier had a bit of a history playing gay in both the entertaining surfing drama Newcastle and the short movie Drowning (which was featured in the collection Boys On Film 6: Pacific Rim).

He’ll soon be seen in the likes of Plush, Bait and Drift, and we’re sure he’ll look very pretty in all of them. Click on the pics below for larger versions, and as a bonus we’ve got a vid of him in the buff from Newcastle at the bottom of this post. [Read more…]

Avengers Assemble Alternate Opening – The film could have had a more sombre start

August 29, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Avengers Assemble could have started on a slightly bleaker note, with New York covered in rubble and SHIELD’s Maria Hill bemoaning what happened, and then the rest of the film told in flashback. Marvel has now released this opening, ahead of the movie’s DVD/Blu-ray release on September 17th. Although I’m glad this didn’t make it into the movie, it’s interesting as it would have set a different tone and also has the kind of self-knowing attitude Joss Whedon is known for. Take a look.

Would Queer As Folk Have Been Made Today?

August 28, 2012 By Lewis Shepherd Leave a Comment

In 1999 a Channel 4 series not only changed the landscape for homosexuality on television but television in general. Queer as Folk introduced viewing audiences to the lives of a group of gay men living in Manchester that regularly frequented the infamous Canal Street.

But after making such an impact on audiences the world over, and after all the series was re-made for an American audience (which ran for five seasons), it makes you wonder whether this type of programme would get commissioned now.

It’s been more than 10 years since we last saw Stuart, Vince, and Nathan and all the other characters popping up on our screens, but the impact they left is phenomenal. Before the show gay men had representation on television – after all Dale Winton and Julian Clary were extremely popular – but this was the first time a group of gay characters were central to an entire series, and not just a few extra characters added on at the end.

The US version of Queer As Folk ran five seasons

Since the show left the airwaves it paved the way for multiple gay characters and storylines in a whole variety of different shows. It isn’t unusual these days to turn on any soap opera and see several gay characters, something that wasn’t really seen before the turn of the new millennium, which was just after Queer as Folk. Gay men and women now had a significant part in soaps, dramas and comedy shows, allowing the public to see that gay people are everywhere and that we’re just normal people.

However, whereas we do get multiple gay characters frequenting the Rovers Return or the Queen Vic, gay specific shows seem to be very few and far between. There was Sugar Rush on Channel 4 that came around in 2004, and now we have Lip Service, which was first introduced in 2010, but that means that in the 11 years between Queer as Folk and Lip Service there was only one other UK television show that focused primarily on gay characters.

Maybe it’s because there just aren’t people out there writing these kinds of programmes now or maybe they feel that after Queer as Folk there wasn’t much more to be done – I mean who would want to take on the amazing Russell T Davies? But it could also have something to do with attitudes. In the last few years there have been multiple complaints made to Ofcom regarding gay people on screen in shows such as Coronation Street, Eastenders and Torchwood, but why is this? Surely attitudes have become more diverse in the last 10 years since Queer as Folk came out, or maybe due to the lack of gay central shows people are forgetting about the impact that was made a decade ago, or maybe it’s as simple as people were a little bit more open and curious back in the 90s.

Queer As Folk was a surprise ratings hit

It does appear that given the length of time between these gay central shows and the complaints received about soap operas, that if Queer as Folk were to be pitched today and not 10 years ago, then it wouldn’t have been made. Then again if it had never been made in the first place I doubt there would be many gay people in soaps today.

It’s not all doom and gloom though, just recently it was announced that comedian Sue Perkins will be staring in a comedy series for BBC2 called Heading Out, which will see Perkins play a vet who is afraid to come out to her parents.

So maybe we are about to turn a corner and see more LGBT focused programmes again where gay people play the leads, but whether something like Queer As Folk will come along again is a different matter all together.

Watch the first episode of Queer As Folk below (probably only available in the UK).

Crush Of The Day: Harry & Luke Treadaway

August 27, 2012 By Tim Isaac 2 Comments

Devon-born twin brothers Harry & Luke Treadaway started to make their mark before they even left drama school, starring in the conjoined twin movie Brothers Of The Head. Since then they’ve worked both together and apart, and been very handsome while doing it (they’ve also worked as models, perhaps unsurprisingly).

Harry’s been seen in Control, City Of Ember, Fish Tank and has a role in the upcoming big-budget Lone Ranger movie. Luke meanwhile has popped up in Dogging: A Love Story, Clash Of The Titans, The Whistleblower, Killing Bono and was the best thing in Attack The Block.

Both brothers have movies hitting cinemas in the next two weeks, with Harry starring in Cockney Vs. Zombies, which is out August 31st, while Luke pops up in St. George’s Day on September 7th. So therefore it’s a great time for a pictorial look at the sexy duo, who aren’t averse to showing off a bit of skin, with the sexiest pics below coming from Harry & Luke’s stage production of Mark Ravenhill’s Over There, which seems to involve them stuffing their hands down their pants a lot!

Click on the images below for larger versions (and sorry to Harry & Luke if we’ve confused either of them in the captions). [Read more…]

Crush Of The Day: Taylor Kitsch

August 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s been both a good and bad year for Taylor Kitsch. He’s starred in major movies such as John Carter, Battleship and Savages, but all of them have underperformed, which is likely to have studios wondering whether it’s worth betting major bucks on him in the future. However he’s very pretty, with looks partway between full-on jock and boy-next-door.

With Battleship reaching DVD and Blu-ray in the UK yesterday, we thought it was a good time for a photo tribute to the former Friday Night Lights star, who thankfully isn’t averse to showing off some skin. We’ve previously paid homage to his abs in John Carter, so here are some more pics of him to drool over. [Read more…]

Is Shia LaBeouf Going To Be Having Real Sex In His New Film?

August 18, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

shia-labeouf-indiana-jones3It appears that Shia LeBeouf fans have something to get very excited about. Recently it was rumoured he was in talks to join Lars Von Trier’s nymphomaniac, a film we knew was going to feature some hardcore scenes (there’ll be both hardcore and softcore versions created). However what we didn’t know is whether the on-screen sex was going to involve LaBeouf, and is his character is involved, whether there would be a body double.

Well, while LaBeouf was slightly elliptical in a new interview with MTV, he does seem to suggest he will indeed be getting it on for real in the movie. He says, “There’s a disclaimer at the top of the script that basically says we’re doing it for real. Everything that is illegal, we’ll shoot in blurred images. Other than that, everything is happening.”

It seems LaBeouf was interested in working with a ‘dangerous’ director like Melancholia and Antichrist’s Lars Von Trier, as well as pushing himself beyond the edge of what he’d normally be comfortable with. If you live in the US, you can see the MTV interview with Shia here. LaBeouf has said recently he’s no longer that interested in making big, shiny Hollywood movies and will instead be looking to work in smaller, more challenging projects with ‘visionary’ directors. Nymphomaniac seems to fit with that, even if he does admit to being rather scared of Von Trier.

Just a few years ago having real sex in a film would have been career suicide for someone of LaBeouf’s stature, but many are likely to see this as a brave choice for Shia, especially if the movie is good and not just of prurient interest. The film centres on the erotic adventures of a woman from her youth to the age of fifty. It is told through the eyes of her husband Joe (Stellan Skarsgård). Shia LaBeouf’s exact role in the film has not been revealed. Charlotte Gainsbourg also star.

This won’t be LaBeouf’s first brush with nudity, as he recently appeared nude in an experimental music video from Sigur Ros. The image above is from that short film, and you can watch the whole thing here.

Apropos Of Nothing: David Beckham In His Underwear (Again)

August 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

I think it’s safe to safe that David Beckham is not ashamed of his body, to the point where you wonder whether with half his photoshoots, the photographer actually wanted him wearing a three-piece suit, but he refused to put on anything more than a pair of underpants.

His new range of underwear hits H&M in the US this week, which many of you will be pleased to hear means some new shots of his posing in very little clothing have been released via his Facebook page. And does it make me weird that I actually think he look sexiest wearing longjohns? Well, enjoy (click on the pics below for a larger version)! [Read more…]

Second Season Of Gay Web Series Husbands Hits The Web, Including A Joss Whedon Cameo!

August 16, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The first episode of the second season of the fun web-series Husbands has hit the internet – and best of all, it features a cameo from Avengers director Joss Whedon! There are also appearances from Dollhouse’s Dichen Lachman, Battlestar Galactica’s Tricia Helfer and Buffy’s Emma Caulfield, so it’s certainly far more star-studded than most web series can muster. But then, as Husbands was co-created by former Buffy and Dollhouse producer Jane Espenson, she has a great range of actors she can call upon, with the likes of Buffy’s Amber Benson set to appear in upcoming episodes.

Husbands is set in a fictional America where gay marriage is legal everywhere, and two celebrities – one an openly gay actor and the other a newly out baseball player – drunkenly get hitched in Las Vegas. Despite the fact it’s all happened a bit quick, their worry about scandal and disgracing the hard won right of gays getting married means they decide to keep their secret and try to make the relationship work. In season 2 they’re still dealing with the difficulties of gay life and the even more unusual challenges of gay celebrities, where they have to negotiate what America expects of their homos.

The series is directed by Jeff Greenstein, who produced episodes of Friends and Will & Grace, and stars Brad Bell as Cheeks and Sean Hemeon as Brady. The next episode will be released on August 29th. The can find out more at the show’s website. [Read more…]

Crush Of The Day: Luke Kirby

August 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Luke Kirby is quite the hottie! He stars as the other man in Take This Waltz, which sees Michelle Williams as a married woman with a sweet but unexciting husband (Seth Rogen), who begins to stray when she meets the charming and sexy Daniel (Kirby). The movie hits UK cinemas on August 17th, 2012, and so we thought it was the perfect time to pay homage to the prettiness that is Luke.

Canadian born Kirby has previously appeared in films such as Halloween: Resurrection, Mambo Italiano and Shattered Glass, as well as popping up in TV shows like Flashpoint, Law & Order and Republic Of Doyle. Hopefully we’ll see a lot more of his (and as you can see below, we’ve already seen quite a lot).
