Win A Midnight’s Children Novel & Film Poster

December 19, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

midnights-children-quad-largeFor many years Salman Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children was deemed unfilmable, but now Deepa Mehta has taken on the task – working from Rushdie’s own script – and has been getting good notices for the end result. The movie reaches UK cinema screens on December 26th, and to celebrate, we’ve got a copy of the novel and a film poster to give away to one lucky person.

Spanning decades and generations, celebrated Canadian filmmaker Deepa Mehta’s highly anticipated adaptation of Salman Rushdie’s Booker Prize®-winning novel is an engrossing allegorical fantasy in which children born on the cusp of India’s independence from Britain are endowed with strange, magical abilities.

Midnight’s Children follows the destinies of a pair of children born at the stroke of midnight on August 15, 1947, the very moment that India claimed its independence from Great Britain – a coincidence of profound consequence for both. “Handcuffed to history,” and switched at birth by a nurse in a Bombay hospital, Saleem Sinai (Satya Bhabha), the son of a poor single mother, and Shiva (Siddharth), scion of a wealthy family, are condemned to live out the fate intended for the other. Imbued with mysterious telepathic powers, their lives become strangely intertwined and inextricably linked to their country’s careening journey through the tumultuous twentieth century.

If you’d like to try and win one of the Midnight’s Children novel and poster that we’ve got to give away, answer the question below and fill in your details, then press submit! The competition closes on January 1st, so get answering and good luck! [Read more…]

Win The Excellent Yossi On DVD!

December 7, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In 2002, director Eytan Fox gained a lot of fans for his gay-themed Israeli drama Yossi & Jagger. 10 years on he’s letting us catch up with one of the main character with the new film, Yossi, which is out on DVD December 10th, and can be purchased from Amazon here. However we’ve got two copies to give away in this competition!

Returning to the role that won him TFF’s Best Actor award, Ohad Knoller gives another extraordinary performance as Yossi, a gay man living a solitary existence in Tel Aviv. A perennially sad, workaholic doctor, Yossi has his quiet world shaken when a blast from his past returns and jolts his world. Their brief but emotionally charged reunion unnerves Yossi enough to make him spontaneously leave Tel Aviv.

It is only then, on the desolate roads of southern Israel, that a chance encounter with a group of lively soldiers ignites Yossi’s desire to awaken from his emotional slumber. Heart-warming and sensual, YOSSI is an ode to love lost and love found, in situations where we least expect to find them so.

If you’d like to try and win one of the two Yossi DVDs that we’ve got to give away, answer the question below and fill in your details, then press submit! The competition closes on December 20th, so get answering and good luck! [Read more…]

December 5, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

To celebrate the release of The Oranges, in cinemas December 7 (cert 15) we have teamed up with Paramount Pictures UK to offer you the chance to win one of five posters of the film.

David and Paige Walling (Hugh Laurie, Catherine Keener) and Terry and Cathy Ostroff (Oliver Platt, Allison Janney) are best friends and neighbors living on Orange Drive in suburban New Jersey.  Their comfortable existence goes awry when prodigal daughter Nina Ostroff (Leighton Meester), newly broken up with her fiancé Ethan (Sam Rosen), returns home for Thanksgiving after a five-year absence.  Rather than developing an interest in the successful son of her neighbors, Toby Walling (Adam Brody), which would please both families, it’s her parents’ best friend David who captures Nina’s attention.

When the connection between Nina and David becomes undeniable, everyone’s lives are thrown into upheaval, particularly Vanessa Walling’s (Alia Shawkat), Nina’s childhood best friend.  It’s not long before the ramifications of the affair begin to work on all of the family members in unexpected and hilarious ways, leading everyone to reawaken to their lives, reassess what it means to be happy, and realize that sometimes what looks like a disaster turns out to be the thing we need.
