Tough Love S3 Ep2 – Steven goes on a date with a cute guy while Blaire turns hypochondriac

April 6, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tough-love-s3-ep2-slideIn the two-part first episode of Tough Love Season 3, Steven’s date with a super-hot, muscled model didn’t go too well as it brought up all his insecurities. However, there’s a possibility things are looking up for him in Episode 2. However Blaire is being as anxious as ever.

Ep 2 finds Blaire in a panic over the Ebola virus. In her words, “How do we know Ebola is over? It’s only over until the next person gets it!” Meanwhile, Steven goes on his first OkCupid date with the adorable Tyler, played by actor Logan Sutherland, and things get cute. But will they get to kiss?

Creator/star Steven Bell comments, “This episode was a blast to make. We get to dive deep into Blaire’s mind and see how her anxiety works. We shot a full Ebola Zombie sequence on a NYC subway and it’s every public transit passenger’s worst nightmare. We also get to see Steven go on his first successful date with a cute boy named Tyler. Tyler is handsome, smart, but also awkward in his own way. The chemistry between the two characters is really cute. Maybe too cute.”

Gay Short Film Showcase: Ruben – A bullied gay teen hopes he’s found love & an escape

April 4, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ruben-slideThe trials and tribulations of gay teenagers is a perennial subject for gay filmmakers, and that’s certainly true here. Ruben & Mike follows Ruben, who’s constantly bullied for being gay at school, but hopes he’s finally found a real connection when he goes on a date with Mike.

However, he discovers that life isn’t always that easy, especially when other homophobic teenagers are involved. It’s a sweet and sometimes rather sad short film (actually at times it’s a little melodramatic), but well worth a watch and it makes a powerful stand against bullying, of whatever form it takes.

Dorian Gray Web Series Trailer – Oscar Wilde’s tale continues, gets a little less white & a bit more gay

March 31, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

dorian-gray-webseriesIt’s 126 years since Oscar Wilde’s The Picture Of Dorian Gray was first published, but the tale of a man who stays endlessly young as a picture of him ages and withers still holds a powerful place in popular culture. Now a new gay-themed web series is coming that continues on the story into the modern day.

It’s also keen to show that with criticism of depictions of gay culture being overwhelmingly white and straight, it isn’t difficult to tell interesting tales led by people of different cultures and ethnicities. The show follows Heath, ‘An intrepid young art history researcher digs into the mystery of his elusive boss, and discovers that the man is actually the ageless and immortal Dorian Gray, surrounded by an entire intriguing – and dangerous – world of the supernatural.’

Unfortunately it looks like we may have to wait a little while for the show itself, which is being funded thanks to a grant from a Canadian film development group. Keep and eye out for it and enjoy the trailer below. [Read more…]

Gay Short Film Showcase: Le Parcours – Looking at the obstacle course run by young LGBT people

March 30, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

le-parcoursTBWA Paris and Inter-LGBT France have teamed up to create the very short but very effective film, Le Parcours (The Course). As the title suggests, it’s about an obstacle course, but this is a metaphorical one looking at the difficulties faced by many LGBT people around the world.

Ben Briand of Moonwalk Films directed the short, which is filmed completely in the first person, mixing the real and the imaginary to give a very good feel for the struggles with school, friends, family and identity that many young LGBT people have to deal with. Inter-LGBT says they wanted to show, the ‘energy, patience and courage it takes to get up every morning and keep moving despite prejudice and violence’, for many LGBT people.

Take a look at Le Parcours below. If you know a short film we ought to be posting, tell us by getting in touch via our contact page. And check out more gay short films and web series here. [Read more…]

Tough Love: Season 3, Episode 1, Part 2 – Steven still isn’t sure what to do with his hot gay date

March 29, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In just a week, Part 1 of the first episode of Season 3 of Tough Love has had over 10k views on Vimeo, which means there’s plenty of people out there waiting to find out what happens next. When we left them, Blaire was in the midst of discovering the ex-girlfriend she wants back has found someone new.

Meanwhile, Steven’s insecurities surfaced when he discovered his blind date was a drop dead gorgeous model – and even worse, the hunk actually seemed to like him! In Part 2, Steven has to deal with what happens next, and as you can see from the gif above, that may involve getting into bed and confronting the fact he’s not quite as toned as the other guy (and to be honest, it’s not something he deals with particularly well).

It seems creator Steven Bell was also rather smitten with his co-star, commenting, “The actor who plays Marco (Constantin Tripes) is like a real life God. He’s 6’4” and not an ounce of fat on his body. In comparison, I’m barely 5’11” and I’m not sure if I actually have abs. I’ve never seen them so how can I be sure? In this week’s episode Marco takes Steven back to his apartment for “dessert” and things get steamy. I had to straddle Constantin in bed and it made me sweat a little, I think that my real life nervousness really made the scene work. Luckily Constantin was such a pro and had a great sense of humor during the entire shoot.”

Gay Short Film Showcase: American Obsession: Sailor Moon – Rediscovering the LGBT side of the classic anime

March 29, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

sailor-moonVice Media has released a great little documentary called American Obsession: Sailor Moon, which focuses on the LGBT-side of the beloved Japanese anime series.

Despite only being 11 minutes long, it covers a lot of ground, such as how when it was first dubbed for American audiences in the 1990s, two of the female characters, who were lovers in the original Japanese version, were turned into lovers who were just friends. However, even then many English-speaking viewers realised that there was something amiss.

The doc also looks at LGBT people and others who found inspiration in Sailor Moon, including a man who grew up friendless and affected by homophobic abuse from friends and family, who found solace in Sailor Moons, as well as learning about overcoming adversity and how people should treat one another. It’s well worth watching, so take a look below.

Tough Love: Season 3, Episode 1 – Steven doesn’t know what to do when a hot gay guy wants him

March 23, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tough-love-s3-ep1A couple of days ago we posted the trailer for Season 3 of Tough Love. Now the first episode has arrived, which takes us back into the dysfunctional world of the gay Steven and the sexually fluid Blaire. The third season is here thanks to a successful crowdfunding campaign, which ensures there’ll be seven more episodes coming over the next few weeks. Beware though, Tough Love can be oddly addictive.

Gay Short Film Showcase: Walk! – Looking into the world of the New York ball scene

March 23, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

walk-slideThe 1990 documentary Paris Is Burning, about the New York ball scene is legendary in certain circles, but it’s not without its controversy, particularly over whether it exploited the participants. Now there’s a new look into that same world, giving a fresh taste of a vibrant world of Voguing in the LGBT community – Walk!.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Voguing is a form of dance that was created on the streets and drag balls of Harlem by a subculture of young mostly poor, gay, trans, black and/or Latino’s in the 1980s. The Ballroom scene in which Voguing exists in is an art form that’s closely linked with ideas of fashion, luxury, and social and economic mobility.

‘In the past few years the Voguing and Ballroom scene has seen a resurgence in its popularity spreading across the globe. No longer limited to members of American urban black and Latino gay communities it can be found as far away as Russia now. Historically the Ballroom scene included society’s most marginalized: minorities within minorities within minorities. In a world where they have been rejected, ballroom not only accepted these people for who they were, it celebrated them!

‘While this resurgence in popularity is celebrated by many there is concern by some that with Voguing’s success in crossing over into the mainstream to communities of the “non marginalized” that there is a risk the dance may slowly be losing its connections to its roots.

‘Featuring archival footage from legendary Balls from the late 1980’s to 2016. The House of Pendavis, House of Chanel, House of Fields, Love Ball, House of Latex, and the House of Xtravaganza.’

Take a look at the documentary below. [Read more…]
