Gay-Themed Film He Is Gone Plans Summer 2014 New England Shoot

November 26, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

missing-book-coverWe always like to hear from filmmakers who are planning new gay-themed movies, so it was great to get a message from Gregory G. Allen, co-producer and screenwriter of the upcoming movie He Is Gone. The movie, which is an adaptation of Drake Braxton’s book Missing, plans to shoot during Summer 2014 in New England.

And if you’d be interested in getting involved, there are various funding options for ‘those interested in films that champion the spirit of independence and more importantly, want to see more LGBT stories being told through the brilliance of film’.

Lois Munoz-Merka will direct, with ASD Media & Entertainment backing the movie. Munoz-Merka is a former resident of Boston and Providence and could not wait to return to that part of the US after reading a copy of the 2012 New England Book Festival – Best Gay Fiction prize-winning book and knowing it was to be her first feature film. With a varied background in music, film, and television, she knew the story of a gay couple from the Boston area that returns to the Deep South for a reunion and one ends up missing needed to be told in a truthful way.

“The story hits on so many topics that are true to both the gay community and the straight world,” the filmmaker comments. “As a straight woman, I was moved by the plight of this man because love is love. It is a powerful story that will translate beautifully into film.

He Is Gone is described as ‘a journey of self discovery when one is tested in the most extreme of circumstances. As momentum for marriage equality continues to build, the film illustrates the divide that is a constant reminder of how far we still need to go. It’s about friendship and love and what people will do for each other to aid in desperate times; and when that aid can become enabling of bad habits. It’s about the families we build and those we sometimes attempt to forget.’

“He Is Gone is a psychological drama that twists and turns like a winding staircase,” says Gregory G. Allen. “The main character is on a trek to reach the top as he unravels the mystery of the disappearance of his husband.”

Kill Your Darlings Helmer John Krokidas Takes On Standard Happiness Package

November 26, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

john-krokidas-slide
After the indie success off Kill Your Darlings, director John Krokidas is planning his next move as he has signed on to direct Fox Searchlight’s Standard Happiness Package, according to Deadline.

The indie sci-fi is based on a short story by Charles Yu and follows a college graduate who takes an entry-level position at a tech company. His rather unusual job is that he has to experience painful events from other people’s lives. He falls desperate in love with his boss and tries to build a relationship, but this proves incredible difficult in a world that is slowly becoming entirely virtual and where he ends up becoming a human pain cushion.

The story was originally published as part of Yu’s ‘Sorry Please Thank You’ collection. The gay Krokidas will helm from a script by Keith Bunin. It’s not clear when it will shoot.

Want To Help Get More Episodes Of The Great Gay-Themed Web Series The Three Bits Made?

November 25, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Earlier this year we posted several episodes of the great gay-themed web series, The Three Bits, which focusses on a trio of the Bits family – the gay Henry, lesbian Roman and mommy blogger Madison – who get three episodes apiece in the debut outing. Now the Brooklyn-based creators of the show, Max Freeman and Margaret Singer, have taken to Kickstarter to look for funding for the next set of episodes.

They’ve promised that future episode ‘include a visit from the Westboro Baptist Church, spilled blood, bathroom cruising gone wrong, and cameos from some of our favorite porn stars!’ The hope is to raise $50,000 to fund another nine episodes, and if they get more than that, there’s the possibility of even more instalments.

It’s an entertaining New York set show, which is a well-written and well played. You can watch Henry’s episodes, where he tries to organise an orgy here – Episode 1, Episode 2, Episode 3. If you like it, you can head over the Kickstarter to help make the next episodes. [Read more…]

Longer Trailer For HBO’s Gay Series Looking Debuts, Plus A View Behind The Scenes With Jonathan Groff & Co.

November 25, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There’s growing anticipation for the debut of HBO’s gay-themed series Looking, which debuts in the US on January 19th, 2014, and should spread to other parts of the globe soon afterwards. There have already been a couple of short trailers, but now a longer one has debuted, giving us our best look at the show yet. Along with that comes a behind-the-scene ‘Invitation To The Set’.

Here’s the official synopsis: ‘Looking’ offers up the unfiltered experiences of three close friends living — and loving — in modern-day San Francisco. Friendship may bind them, but each is at a markedly different point in his journey: Patrick (Jonathan Groff) is the 29-year-old video game designer getting back into the dating world in the wake of his ex’s engagement; aspiring artist Agustín (Frankie J. Alvarez), 31, is questioning the idea of monogamy amid a move to domesticate with his boyfriend; and the group’s oldest member — longtime waiter Dom (Murray Bartlett), 39 — is facing middle age with romantic and professional dreams still unfulfilled.

‘The trio’s stories intertwine and unspool dramatically as they search for happiness and intimacy in an age of unparalleled choices — and rights — for gay men. Also important to the ‘Looking’ mix is the progressive, unpredictable, sexually open culture of the Bay Area, with real San Francisco locations serving as a backdrop for the group’s lives. Rounding out the ‘Looking’ world are a bevy of dynamic gay men including Kevin (Russell Tovey), Lynn (Scott Bakula), and Richie (Raul Castillo), as well as a wide-range of supporting characters like Dom’s roommate Doris (Lauren Weedman), Agustín’s boyfriend Frank (O.T. Fagbenle), and Patrick’s co-worker Owen (Andrew Law).’

The Gay-Themed Naz + Maalik, Which Explores Stereotypes About Muslims, Seeks Funding

November 22, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There are all sorts of gay-themed films released but very few of them concentrate on queer Muslims. However the upcoming indie Naz + Maalik take that on, while exploring stereotypes and the pressures put on young Muslim men. The film has already been shot, but it’s now looking for funding on Kickstarter to get it completed and into film festivals.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A decade into the War on Terror, two first-generation Muslim teens – friends, classmates, business partners, lovers – spend their Friday hustling the streets of Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. While deciding whether to tell their community about their homosexuality, Naz and Maalik’s ambiguous and secretive relationship unknowingly sets an FBI agent on their trail. As the agent grows convinced that the boys are engaged in “violent radicalism,” her pursuit becomes increasingly menacing and the stakes surrounding the boys’ hapless hustling and lies grow. What began as a struggle to protect their sexual identities evolves into a crisis much larger – a fight to stay alive.’

The film was inspired by interviews director Jay Dockendorf’s conducted after being appalled by FBI and police tactics following 9/11. He did indeed find that one couple’s secret relationship was enough to get the authorities investigating them.

The director commented to HuffPo, “The film considers Islamophobia through the lens of homophobia and homophobia through the lens of racism. I know they’re very separate issues, but for some people, real people on whom these characters are based, they’re completely linked and the balance is delicate. ”

If you’d like to help out, head over to Kickstarter. [Read more…]

Celluloid Trailer – Take a look at the new gay-themed flick from the director of Dream On

November 22, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

This year on BGPS we’ve reviewed gay-themed feature films from the US, Israel, Italy, Australia, Poland, France, Argetina and various others, but despite the fact the site is based in the UK, there are not that many British films that take LGBT subjects as one of their major themes that have come out.

However on January 27th a new one is coming, Celluloid. It’s from the director of one of 2013’s few gay-themed UK movie releases, Dream On, Lloyd Eyre-Morgan, and was inspired by his own life experiences. It stars Shameless actor Jody Latham and rather impressively, was made for just £3,000.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Vulnerable and unable to articulate their worries and struggling with coming to terms with sexuality, teenagers Josh & Nicola struggle with their Mum’ Dawn’s more recent bout of outbursts and her increasing instability as she begins to remember abuse from her past. Josh escapes into a world of gay social media and blogging, while Nicola resorts to darker methods of escape on the local estate. Are Dawn’s recollections true or have they been encouraged? Is the family strong enough to get through it?’

The film premièred at Cinema Diverse Palm Springs gay and lesbian Film festival earlier this year, and will be available on DVD in the UK from January 27th, 2014. You can see the trailer above and take a look at a few pics from the movie below. [Read more…]

November 20, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We enjoyed G.B.F. when we caught it at the Iris Prize Festival (you can read our review here), but it hasn’t gone on general release yet. Now a new clip has debuted, alongside the news that in the US the comedy will be available exclusively on DIRECTV from November 22nd through December 19th, before it debuts in cinema this January!

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In G.B.F., social warfare erupts when three high school clique queens battle for supremacy: drama diva Caprice (Xosha Roquemore), Mormon princess ‘Shley (Andrea Bowen) and blonde fashionista Fawcett (Sasha Pieterse). When unassuming Tanner (Michael J. Willet) is outted, he finds himself cast as the hottest new teen-girl accessory: The Gay Best Friend. Sherlock Star Andrew Scott Opens Up About The Fact He’s Gay

November 19, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

andrew-scottLast month Andrew Scott took part in the special 50th Anniversary National Theatre Live, in which he played a scene with Dominic Cooper as a gay couple in Angels In America. It’s not the first time he’s played gay, but generally he’s kept his own sexuality private.

However he’s now opened up, slipping into an interview with The Independent the fact that he’s gay, as well as how it affects him and his art. The interview was about Legacy, a BBC2 drama about spying between the UK and USSR during the Cold War years.

When asked about how the Irish actor perfected his Russian accent, “There isn’t a huge amount of footage of Russians speaking English as a second language, so I started looking at Vladimir Putin videos on YouTube. But then Putin introduced anti-gay legislation this summer – so, being a gay person, I switched to Rudolf Nureyev videos instead. It was another Nureyev defection of sorts!”

He adds about his sexuality, “Mercifully, these days people don’t see being gay as a character flaw. But nor is it a virtue, like kindness. Or a talent, like playing the banjo. It’s just a fact. Of course, it’s part of my make-up, but I don’t want to trade on it. I am a private person; I think that’s important if you’re an actor. But there’s a difference between privacy and secrecy, and I’m not a secretive person. Really I just want to get on with my job, which is to pretend to be lots of different people. Simple as that.”

Scott is best known for playing Moriarty in the BBC’s Sherlock. He’ll be seen next year in Pride alongside Bill Nighy, Paddy Considine & Dominic West, which is about a group of LGBT activists trying to give money to striking British miners in 1984.

Gay Surfer Documentary Out In The Line-up Seeks Funding

November 17, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

While gay people are seen in more and more walks of life, there are some where they are still pretty much invisible. This includes surfing.

However the documentary Out In The Lineup wants to challenge that perception, and it’s launched a Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign that it hope will help ensure the movie gets finished and can be submitted to film festivals around the globe.

The movie hopes to challenge stereotypes, connect people and raise awareness.

The movie is, ‘is a feature documentary about two gay surfers, David and Thomas, who set off on a global journey to uncover the taboo of homosexuality in surfing. They travel from Australia to Hawaii, California, Mexico and the Galapagos Islands to speak with people from all corners of the surfing community, from former world champions through to everyday surfers. Stories of fear, isolation and self-doubt emerge alongside ones of hope, self-empowerment and transformation. As their journey unfolds, Thomas and David  are inspired to promote change within the existing culture by looking to surfing’s grassroots values of freedom of spirit, open-mindedness and love for the ocean.’

Take a look at the campaign video above, and if you’d like to help, head over to Kickstarter.
