Daniel Radcliffe & Dane DeHaan Take Centre Stage In A New Kill Your Darlings Poster

August 27, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

kill-your-darlings-poster

After much hype surrounding Kill Your Darlings’ Sundance premiere (and Daniel Radcliffe’s gay sex scenes in the movies), the movie is finally heading towards its US release on October 18th (with a November 8th UK date set).

Ahead of that a new poster has been released, featuring Radcliffe and co-star Dane DeHaan, who are both looking extremely yellow.

Based on a true story, Kill Your Darlings charts how a murder helped shape the lives of a group of young men who went on to become the beat generation. Chronicle star DeHaan plays Lucien Carr, the man who introduced Howl writer Allen Ginsberg (Radcliffe) to the likes of William S. Burroughs (Ben Foster) and Jack Kerouac (Jack Huston).

During these early, hedonistic days, a man called David Kammerer (Michael C. Hall) fell for Carr, with his infatuation becoming increasingly obsessive and unhinged – the gay Ginsberg once discovered Kammerer trying to murder Jack Kerouac’s cat. It eventually resulted in Carr stabbing Kammerer to death him and going to prison for his murder. The violent event is said to have indelibly changed all the people involved and etched its way into the published works of the Beat writers.

Dallas Buyers Club Trailer – Matthew McConaughey fights back against AIDS in the mid-80s

August 27, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It looks like Matthew McConaughey may be going for an Oscar run with The Dallas Buyers Club, losing huge amounts of weight to play Ron Woodroof, who fought back against government inaction over the introduction of HIV medication in the 1980s. Now the first trailer for the movie has arrived.

Woodroof was an ordinary man who found himself in a life-or-death battle with the medical establishment and pharmaceutical companies. In 1986, Ron was blindsided by being diagnosed as HIV-positive and given 30 days to live.

With the US still internally divided over how to combat the virus and restricting medications, Ron grabbed hold of non-toxic alternative treatments from all over the world by means both legal and illegal. Seeking to avoid government sanctions against selling non-approved medicines and supplements, he established a “buyers club,” which fellow HIV-positive people could join for access to his supplies.

Jennifer Garner, Jared Leto (as a gay transvestite, no less), Dennis Hare, Steve Zahn, Dallas Roberts and Griffin Dunne also star. Focus Features will release the movie in the US in December, while it’ll reach the UK on February 7th. [Read more…]

Russian Screenwriter Of Tchaikovsky Biopic Says Only ‘Philistines’ Think The Composer Is Gay, Despite Evidence Otherwise

August 24, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

TchaikovskyConsidering the increasingly anti-gay Russian laws that are causing a firestorm of international controversy, it’s little surprise that a planned biopic of famed composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky is planning to whitewash his sexuality. While most people agree that Tchaikovsky was gay – or at least as gay you could be in 19th Century Russia – screenwriter Yuri Arabov is having none of it.

As the New York Times reports, via a Russian interview, Arabov says, “It is far from a fact that Tchaikovsky was a homosexual. Only philistines think this. What philistines believe should not be shown in films.”

This is despite plenty of evidence of Tchaikovsky’s attraction to men, including a biography by his brother, as well as letters by the composer himself where he talks openly about his nature.

Arabov seems to think his biopic will set the record straight on a man who “is marked by rumors and suffers greatly from this.” Even if those ‘rumors’ appear to be the truth.

The writer also offers the slightly odd statement that he would, “Not sign my name to a film that advertises homosexuality. Not because I don’t have a gay friend, but because this is outside the sphere of art.”

However, he doesn’t say why homosexuality is outside art. It may be outside the law though, as most of the recent controversy in Russia has surrounded the introduction of laws that ban the ‘promotion’ of ‘non-traditional relationships’ to people under 18. It is possible that the film, simply titled Tchaikovsky, could be considered to break that law if it said one of Russia’s greatest historical figures was gay.

Indeed, Stephen Fry said just that in a letter to British Prime Minister David Cameron and the International Olympic Committee about the controversy surrounding the upcoming Sochi Olympics, that “Any statement, for example, that Tchaikovsky was gay and that his art and life reflects this sexuality and are an inspiration to other gay artists would be punishable by imprisonment.”

So it seems we’re getting a straight Tchaikovsky in the upcoming 2015 movie, no matter how far from the truth that is. Perhaps now those outside Russia need to make their own biopic of the composer to set the record straight (or rather, gay).

Jason Isaacs Thinks The Idea Gay Actors Can’t Play Straight Roles Is So ‘Absurd I Can’t Believe It Still Exists’

August 24, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jason-IsaacsAlthough more and more actors are feeling confident enough to come out (instead of either waiting until they were dead or coming out when they need to hawk an autobiography after their fame has waned), there are still a lot who are staying firmly in the closet. Just look at Wentworth Miller, who came out a couple of days ago but in 2006 adamantly stated in an interview “I’m not gay”.

In a recent interview with The Telegraph, Harry Potter star Jason Isaacs has touched on the current situation for gay actors, saying that, “I have a lot of gay friends who don’t come out… If you are a romantic lead, there is a perception – I don’t know if it is true or not – that you will no longer be cast as straight people.”

However in this day and age he thinks that idea is ridiculous. “The notion that a gay actor can’t seem like they are in love with a woman on screen is so patently absurd I can’t believe it still exists,” he says.

The Lucius Malfoy actor added, “It is not for me to push my gay friends to come out. I certainly don’t think that anyone should sacrifice their careers, if that’s what they think it would be, to make a political statement. But my friends who have done that feel immensely relieved and walk taller in their shoes. I would never judge anyone.”

The actor touches on a tough catch 22 that gay actors, particularly in the US, face if they want major mainstream lead roles. Irrespective of whether its true of the audience or not, there’s a perception amongst many casting directors and studio executives that an actor’s sexuality both limits who will watch them (i.e., anti-gay people will avoid films starring them), and that people won’t accept them playing straight roles.

As a result of this, many actors feel pressure to stay in the closet, as the general feeling is they could lose out on good roles (and it’s certainly not unheard of for an actor to be struck off the shortlist for a major role after they’ve said they won’t either go into or stay in the closet). There is definitely more room for gay actors to play diverse roles than there used to be, but fears over how its going to limit your career – some real, some not – remain.

Matthew Bomer Says He’s ‘Really Proud’ Of Wentworth Miller For The Way He Came Out

August 24, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

matt-bomer-white-collarThere’s been plenty of reaction to Wentworth Miller coming out while making a statement against Russia anti-gay laws, and one of those who’s decided to congratulate him is White Collar and Magic Mike star Matthew Bomer.

Bomer chatted with E! at New York’s Heineken U.S. Open kickoff, who said of Wentworth, “Wow, I think its really bold and incredibly classy how he came out and did it. I am really proud of him. Its very reflective of his amazing character.”

Rather than concentrating on Russia, Bomer took the opportunity reflect on the progress being made on gay rights in the US, with new laws being passed giving gay people more equality in various parts of the US. He says, “I hope all these laws continue to pass but we still have a long way to go.”

Prison Break’s Wentworth Miller Officially Comes Out In Protest At Russia’s Anti-Gay Laws

August 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

wentworth-millerFor years there has been speculation around the sexuality of Prison Break star Wentworth Miller. Now he’s decided to put those rumours to rest by coming out as gay and doing so as part of a statement about Russia’s anti-gay laws.

The actor, who recently turned screenwriter with the movie Stoker, had been invited to the St. Petersburg International Film Festival, however he felt the need to decline the invitation, sending a letter to the organisers telling them why.

It reads: Thank you for your kind invitation. As someone who has enjoyed visiting Russia in the past and can also claim a degree of Russian ancestry, it would make me happy to say yes.

However, as a gay man, I must decline.

I am deeply troubled by the current attitude toward and treatment of gay men and women by the Russian government. The situation is in no way acceptable, and I cannot in good conscience participate in a celebratory occasion hosted by a country where people like myself are being systematically denied their basic right to live and love openly.

Perhaps, when and if circumstances improve, I’ll be free to make a different choice.

St. Petersburg is the perhaps the centre of the increasingly homophobic laws in Russia, as it was one of the first cities to clamp down on so-called ‘gay propaganda’, which has since been taken up and copied in national laws.

GLAAD spokesman Wilson Cruz noted in a statement, “Wentworth’s bold show of support sends a powerful message to LGBT Russians, who are facing extreme violence and persecution: you are not alone. As people from across the globe continue to speak out against Russia’s horrific law, more celebrities and corporations should follow his courageous lead in openly condemning Russia’s anti-LGBT law.”

Miller’s sexuality has been an open secret in Hollywood for several years and he has been active with several pro-gay organisations, although he has generally side-stepped the question in interviews (and back in 2006 issued flat-out denials) – until now, that is. He will next be seen in the film The Loft, and also has several scripts in development, including one based on Vlad The Impaler, who was immortalised as Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Let’s hope we see much more of him soon.

GLAAD Debuts Responsibility Index Of Gay Representation In Hollywood

August 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

glaad-studio-responsibility-index2For several years GLAAD has compiled a report on gay characters and storylines on US network television in an attempt to hold the stations to account. However it’s only now they’ve gotten around to doing the same for Hollywood. They’ve released a ‘Studio Responsibility Report’, looking at the releases by the big six studios (20th Century Fox, Paramount Pictures, Sony Columbia, Universal Pictures, The Walt Disney Studios and Warner Brothers) in 2012.

Of the 101 movies released, just 14 had  characters identified as lesbian, gay or bisexual. Shockingly there were absolutely no transgender characters at all. Of the 14 movies with lesbian, gay or bisexual characters, just four of those could be considered major characters.

The majority of these characters showed up in comedies, with nine out of 23 movie being inclusive. And while the majority of 2012 movies were genre flicks (action, fantasy, sci-fi, horror), only three of them had LGBT characters – and one of those was a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it appearance by a gay news anchor in The Avengers. Perhaps surprisingly, while drama is often considered the preserve of the gay character, only one of the 21 dramas released by Hollywood was inclusive.

GLAAD rated Disney and Fox as failing, while the other studios were adequate. Even that was generous considering how few LGBT major characters there were in 2012 movies, and how mixed even those inclusive movies were to their LGBT character. Almost impressively, Fox managed to include absolutely no gay, bisexual or transgender characters in the films it released at all.

GLLAD also used the report to introduce the ‘Vito Russo Test’, based on the ‘Bechdel Test’, which looks at how films depict women. The new test sets three criteria which GLAAD hopes will become a benchmark by which Hollywood can create more multidimensional LGBT character, rather than just token appearance.

The criteria are:
1. The film contains a character that is identifiably lesbian, gay, bisexual, and/or transgender.
2. That character must not be solely or predominantly defined by their sexual orientation or gender identity. I.E. they are made up of the same sort of unique character traits commonly used to differentiate straight characters from one another.
3. The LGBT character must be tied into the plot in such a way that their removal would have a significant effect. Meaning they are not there to simply provide colorful commentary, paint urban authenticity, or (perhaps most commonly) set up a punchline. The character should matter.

GLAAD jusged that six 2012 films passed this test. Many would say they took a fairly loose interpretation of their own standard, as GLAAD was critical of even most of the movies it says passed.

The index certainly shows there’s massive room for improvement, with most gay characters either being there purely to provide humour (either through camp or as the butt of jokes), or to be representative (such as being there so a main character can show themselves being modern and tolerant because they don’t mind gay people).

It’s well worth reading through the whole report, as well as taking a look at the infographic below. GLAAD is also hoping people will write to Hollywood to ask them to improve their depiction of LGBT people. On the evidence GLAAD uncovered, mainstream film certainly needs to do a lot better.

Blue Is the Warmest Colour Trailer – Take a look at the lesbian-themed Cannes Palm d’Or winner

August 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Two of the films that caused the most buzz at this year’s Cannes featured graphic gay sex, but it was the lesbian-themed Blue If The Warmest Colour walked off with the Palm d’Or. The film has just been given an NC-17 rating in the US, which suggests that while director Abdellatif Kechiche though he might have to cut the movie for a US release, it’s actually going to be released uncut when it hits cinemas on October 25th.

You can taker a look at the trailer above.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘At 15, Adele doesn’t question it: a girl goes out with boys. Her life is turned upside down the night she meets Emma, a young woman with blue hair, who will allow her to discover desire, to assert herself as a woman and as an adult. In front of others, Adele grows, seeks herself, loses herself, finds herself…’ Lea Seydoux and Adele Exarchopolis star in the movie, and it was a lengthy sex scene between the two that got people talking at Cannes. Lucas Cruikshank, Better Known As Nickelodeon’s Fred, Comes Out As Gay

August 20, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Lucas-CruikshankThis probably won’t come as too much of a shock to anyone who’s watched Lucas Cruikshank’s journey from Youtube star as his alter-ego Fred Figglehorn, through that character getting a series of movies and a Nickelodeon TV show, that he is gay.

Now the 19-year-old has officially come out, suitably enough in a Youtube video, where he sits on a bed with friend (and Disney star) Jennifer Veal, where they answer questions from fans. One of those questions is, “Are you gay?” Veal says “He’s gay!”, before Cruikshank laughs, throws up his hands and agrees, “I’m gay!”

He adds, “I’m gay. It feels so weird to say it. My family and friends have known this for like three years I just haven’t felt any need to announce it on the internet. I feel awkward!”

Take a look below.
