Margarita Trailer – Take a look at the lesbian-themed festival flick

July 31, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After screening at the likes of the London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival and Outfest, Wolfe Video has set an autumn US release for Margarita, and they’ve also released a trailer, which you can see above.

Here’s the synopsis: Margarita the nanny is muse to all: she’s a whipsmart bookkeeper, can fix everything from a hot tub to a smoothie, and could put Martha Stewart to shame with her effortless domestic engineering. Not to mention she’s sexy as a jaguar, sweet as dulce de leche, and regularly piques everyone’s interest…in more ways than one. She’s everything power couple Gail and Ben and their teenage daughter Mali could ask for in a gorgeous young live-in from Mexico.

But when finances shrink and they can no longer afford her, Margarita’s livelihood and the household stability are suddenly on muy shaky ground. Is this a crisis that Jane the saucy law school girlfriend or Carlos the hot Brazilian handyman can solve? Family, friends, and lovers must come together to keep her in town and the “proposals” start flying.

Filmed in a quaint snowy Toronto suburb against a steamy Latin soundtrack, this Canuck dramedy features Nicola Correia Damude (Degrassi: The Next Generation) as scrumptious stalwart Margarita, Canadian television star Patrick McKenna as pothead doctor Ben, Claire Lautier (Elf, Law and Order) as bi-curious mom Gail, and Maya Ritter who also starred in filmmaking duo Dominique Cardona and Laurie Colbert’s first feature Finn’s Girl (Frameline31) as tomboy teen Mali. Coming Out Trailer – Take a look at the new gay Canadian 12-part series

July 31, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Produced by gay movie luminary Charlie David (Mulligans, Judas Kiss), Coming Out is a 12-part French-Canadian series, set in Montreal. The gay-themed series is coming to DVD in the US, so take a look at whether it’ll be worth getting hold of a copy above.

Here’s the synopsis: The explosive lives, loves and losses of an intermingled group of Montréalers are explored as they confront the subject of difference. Managing a modern relationship can be a mess. Single? Attached? Married? Divorced? Open? Closed? The most common answer is ‘It’s complicated.’

Get ready to come out with these characters as they negotiate acceptance, prejudice and just how much they’re willing to risk in the pursuit of love and happiness.

Mat (Mathieu Blanchard) is a gay fashion photographer with nothing out of his reach until his ex, Ian (Marc-André Poliquin) resurfaces. Meanwhile, Hugo (Patrick Martin) pursues a secret relationship with Olivier (Sébastien Beaulac), a married father who keeps the closet door firmly shut. And finally, Téo (Dhanaé Audet-Beaulieu), is a young man who turns to drugs and prostitution after a messy coming out to his parents. Unaware of how close to home his struggles may come, Caroline (Mélanie Pilon) tries to help Téo get his life back together. [Read more…]

See The Pics Of Benedict Cumberbatch Officiating At A Gay Wedding

July 25, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

benedict-cumberbatch-gay-wedding1
Last week we reported that Benedict Cumberbatch wasn’t going to Comic-Con as he’d agreed to officiate at the same-sex wedding of a friend in Ibiza. Now some images from the event have emerged, showing Cumberbatch doing his marriage duties for Seth Cummings and Rob Rinder, as well as enjoying himself with his shirt off afterwards.

Before he headed to Ibiza, he told Vulture, “Of course, I’m going to make a joke after it, ‘I do weddings. Next will be children’s parties and bat mitzvahs,’ if it goes well. It’s a mainly Jewish and gay audience, so hopefully they will be lenient towards me.”

The pics below were shared by entrepreneur and Conservative grandee Ivan Massow, who was also at the wedding.

Andrew Garfield Elaborates On Why He Thinks Spider-man Stands For Equality

July 24, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Andrew Garfield in The Amazing Spider-manA couple of weeks ago, Andrew Garfield made waves when he joked that he thought it could turn out Spider-man is gay, and that MJ turns out to be a guy, preferably played by Michael B. Jordan.

Now he’s been talking more about his ideas about the character and why he thinks Spider-man is all about equality.

He told Vulture, “My beliefs about living and about life and about the world and humankind have nothing to do with Spider-Man, but what I do believe is that Spider-Man stands for equality. Spider-Man will protect whoever needs protecting: gay, straight, black, lesbian, bisexual, transgender. He’s not gonna go help the middle-class white dude before he helps the homosexual black dude! He is an Everyman, and he is covered head to toe in costume, which is different than any other superhero I’m aware of, and I think that’s why he’s so universally relatable. And he is color-blind and he is blind to any sexual orientation, so it was more just a philosophical question of “Why not?” And I stick to it. I long for the time when we don’t see skin color, where sexual orientation is treated as a small thread in the fabric of a person as opposed to defining them.”

The Happy Sad Clip – New York relationships get complex in the LGBT-themed film

July 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Modern relationship are complicated, I think most people agree with that, and so does filmmaker Rodney Evans, whose latest movie, The Happy Sad, opens in select US cinemas in August 16th. Now a new clip, initially provided to Towleroad, gives us a look at the movie.

The film follows ‘Two young couples in New York – one black and gay, one white and heterosexual – find their lives intertwined as they create new relationship norms, explore sexual identity, and redefine monogamy.’

The film previously screened at San Francisco’s Frameline37 and LA’s Outfest, where it got a good response. Take a look at the clip above and the trailer below.

Sacha Baron Cohen Out Of Freddie Mercury Biopic

July 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

sacha-baron-cohen-brunoFor quite a long time now, Sacha Baron Cohen has been attached to play Freddie Mercury in a biopic of the Queen lead singer. However now Deadline reports that Cohen has exited the movie, due to creative differences with the remaining members of the legendary British band.

Cohen seemingly felt the band members were trying to water down the story, as they preferred a PG rated movie about Queen, while Cohen wanted a ‘gritty R-rated tell-all centered around the gifted gay singer’. There were also crew issues, as Cohen apparently tried to bring in top names such as screenwriter Peter Morgan (The Queen), as well as talking to directors like David Fincher and Tom Hooper. However none were approved by the band, who have both script and director approval .

Hooper, the Oscar-winning helmer of The King Speech and Les Miserables, was apparently ready to sign up, but due to the creative differences, no formal offer could be made.

Considering the life Mercury lived, you can understand why Cohen stood his ground, as a sanitised version isn’t any good to anyone – indeed it’s sometimes a shame that the remaining members of Queen can’t remember who they used to be, instead of the rather dull middle-aged men they are today (especially as they still sometimes seem uncomfortable fully acknowledging Mercury’s sexuality). However, given the resemblance between Sacha and Freddie, it’s difficult to imagine anyone else taking on the role.

Modern Family’s Jesse Tyler Ferguson Marries Justin Mikita

July 22, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jesse-tyler-ferguson-justin-mikitaOver the weekend, Modern Family star Jesse Tyler Ferguson married his beau, Justin Mikita, in a ceremony in New York attended by over 200 people. The couple, who’d been dating for over two years, announced their engagement last September and have now officially tied the knot.

Pulitzer Prize winning writer Tony Kushner (Angels in America, Lincoln) officiated, with the likes of Modern Family co-stars Julie Bowen, Ty Burell and Eric Stonestreet attending. Also at the ceremony were celebs such as Jerry O’ Connell, Rebecca Romijn, Zachary Quinto and Cat Deely.

Back in March Feguson explained why they were planning the wedding in New York, saying “We wanted to get married in New York, because that’s where it’s legal, so we want to support the state that’s in support of us.”

While we have to admit we’d have preferred it if Ferguson had married Eric Stonestreet – as we don’t think Mitchell should be with anyone but Cam – we’re slowly coming to terms with the fact Stonestreet is actually straight in real life. So good luck to Jesse and Justin, we wish them well!

Intriguing Gay-Themed Short Film Cold Call Seeks Funding

July 20, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

More and more gay-themed films are looking to the potential audience to put up the money to actually make the movie. The latest of those is Cold Call, which recently launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise the $40,000 they’re looking for to make the short film a reality.

The film is based on a short story written by Indian-American author Rahul Mehta that was published in the New York Times in the fall of 2011 (you can read it here). It’s certainly got an intriguing premise.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Naveen is in his first year at an American College. As a son of Indian immigrants, he struggles with the Indian values that were instilled in him by his parents and the western culture he was born and raised in.

‘Furthermore, Naveen is gay and his strict Indian parents have no inkling of it. He’s finally out of the house, emancipated from his parents rule and in college where he can fully explore his own ideas and his sexuality…But not in that order. He’s about to get a phone call with an offer, he can’t refuse!’

That call is from a complete stranger who promises an illicit encounter, which until that point had only dwelled in Naveen’s fantasies. Filled with curiosity Naveen agrees to meet the caller and they arrange a clandestine meeting in the school library.

Director Sohnia Can Der Puye states, “Upon reading this short story, I immediately wanted to adapt it into a short film. I could see the story unfold visually. This story has so many elements and dynamics that I believe will resonate with a diverse audience. Most importantly this film highlights the complexities of the gay children of immigrants who grow up in progressive western countries but are imprisoned by their parents deep-rooted cultural beliefs.”

The hope is that if they can raise the funds needed, the short will shoot later this year and be completed by early 2014.

You can find out more over at Kickstarter (and of course there are plenty of incentives offered if you do want to pledge money), or at the film’s official website.

And here’s the first page of the script…

Benedict Cumberbatch To Officiate At A Gay Wedding In Ibiza This Weekend

July 19, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Benedict-cumberbatchIt’s quite a big few days for Benedict Cumberbatch. He got an Emmy Nomination for Parade’s End yesterday, today is his 37th birthday and tomorrow he’s going to officiate at a friend’s same-sex wedding in Ibiza (gay marriage has been legal in Spain since 2005).

Talking to Vulture he says, “Of course, I’m going to make a joke after it, ‘I do weddings. Next will be children’s parties and bat mitzvahs,’ if it goes well. It’s a mainly Jewish and gay audience, so hopefully they will be lenient towards me.”

Perhaps this could be a lucrative sideline for Cumberbatch, especially considering his huge following in the gay community. Indeed, when the first British gay marriages start happening next summer, perhaps Benedict should do all of them! We’d imagine he’ll be too busy making Sherlock, or starring in Hollywood movies, or some other such nonsense though – he’s likely to miss his calling.
