Lesbian Drama Blue Is the Warmest Colour Wins The Cannes Palm d’Or

May 27, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Blue-Is-the-Warmest-Colour-posterWhile some described the race for the Cannes Palm d’Or as one of the most open fields for years, there been no doubt that for the past few days, Blue Is The Warmest (aka La Vie d’Adele – Chaptire 1 & 2) had emerged as the favourite. The only question was whether the jury would shy away from giving the award to a movie with graphic, unsimulated lesbian sex.

It turns out the likes of Steven Spielberg, Lynn Ramsay, Nicole Kidman, Ang Lee and Christoph Waltz, who were among those choosing the winner, weren’t put off by that (and looking at how LGBT friendly those names have been, it’s not too much of a surprise).

Blue Is The Warmest Colours is about, ‘At 15, Adele doesn’t question it: a girl goes out with boys. Her life is turned upside down the night she meets Emma, a young woman with blue hair, who will allow her to discover desire, to assert herself as a woman and as an adult. In front of others, Adele grows, seeks herself, loses herself, finds herself…’

Lea Seydoux and Adele Exarchopolis star in the movie. Jury Chairman Spielberg commented, “The film is a great love story… We were absolutely spellbound by the two brilliant young actresses, and the way the director observed his young players.”

France wasn’t just about Cannes this weekend, as hundreds of thousands took to the streets to march against gay marriage. However Spielberg added on the debate, “Many brave [US] states are resolving in way that those of us in favour of gay marriage are happy about.”

Lynn Ramsay, the British director of We Need to Talk About Kevin, said: “Everyone on the jury saw behind the gay relationship, it was just a love story, and it didn’t matter if it was gay or straight.”

Spielberg also had great praise for the leads, saying “It was an obvious conclusion that without Léa and Adèle, the synergy could not have happened. If the casting had been even slightly different, if anything had been a little left of centre, it wouldn’t have worked. It was the perfect choice from a sensitive film-maker.”

There have been some suggesting that despite its Cannes success, Blue Is the Warmest Colour may have difficulty finding distribution unless Abdellatif Kechiche agrees to cuts, due to the ‘shocking’ (a word that’s been used quite a lot, unfortunately) lesbian sexuality in the movie, including one particularly graphic, unsimulated scene (the fact it’s three hours long may also limit its commercial appeal).

Kechiche does appear to be amenable to cuts if it’s a deal-breaker, saying “We wouldn’t want the film not to be screened because of one scene. But of course that wouldn’t apply if it were the whole thing.”

What no one seems to be in doubt about is that it’s a very involving and emotional movie.

Other awards included the Coen brothers’ Inside Llewyn Davis getting the Grand Prix, while Berenice Bejo (The Artist) nabbed Best Actress for Asghar Farhadi’s The Past, and Bruce Dern picked up Best Actor for Alexander Payne’s Nebraska.

Queer Photo Doc South Of The Border Hopes To Explore Being LGBT In The US South

May 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

For many people, when they think on the US South, images of rednecks and rampant homophobia spring to mind. But what’s it like to be queer and live in the South?

The ‘queer photo documentary’ South Of The Border, from filmmaker Christian Hendricks, hopes to explore this, and is seeking $5,000 on Kickstarter to helm. Hendricks hopes to spend several weeks this summer on the road, travelling the American South and going to LGBT events, bars, and community groups, and documenting life there through the medium of photography.

He says, “Though my hometown of Cincinnati is in every sense a midwestern city, it serves as the gateway to the American South, sitting just across from the Ohio River, where the South (and my journey) begins.

“I’m drawn to the South’s distinctive culture: a region that is famous for being both hospitable and intolerant. What is it like to be queer in a region with such conservative religious and political convictions? Are these just fading stereotypes from the past? I hope to answer these questions and more as I set out to meet people, immerse myself in communities, and develop a new, personal understanding that I can share through photography.”

It sounds like it could be an interesting, so head over to Kickstarter to find out more. [Read more…]

Feature Version Of Aussie LGBT Short Film Drowning Looks For Funding

May 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Fans of the Boys On Film series of DVDs, which feature a selection of the best LGBT shorts from around the world, may remember Drowning from Boys On Film 6: Pacific Rim. The Aussie slick, Now director Craig Boreham is hoping to turn Drowning into a feature film, and is seeking $67,000 on the crowd-funding site Pozible to help him, with the hope of eventually raising $200,000 to complete the film.

The campaign is near its target, but only has a few hours left until it May 25th deadline.

The movie version of Drowning will be called Teenage Kicks. Here’s the synopsis: In the final moments of his 17th year, Miklós Varga’s world has come crashing down. His plans to run away and escape his claustrophobic migrant family have been brutally undone by the unexpected death of his older brother, Tomi. Only Mik knows the events that led to this tragedy and as far as he can see there is only one person to blame. Himself. He is suddenly torn between his desire to head north and start a new life with his best friend Dan, and his familial obligation to fix his broken family: torn between the life that he wants to have and the life that he feels he’s expected to have. Can he fill the aching void left by his adored sibling or is he toxic and destined to bring ruin upon everyone he loves? Teenage kicks is a journey through the minefield of adolescence, as Mik searches for a way to navigate through his guilt and explosive sexuality to become the man that he wants to become.’

Miles Szanto will play Mik, Bojana Novakovic is set to be Annuska and Luke Arnold will be Tomi. It certainly expands on the ideas of Drowning, including its main character’s fluid sexuality.

L’Inconnu du lac (Stranger by the Lake) Teaser – Take a look at the gay art-porn noir that’s shaking up Cannes

May 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

linconnu-du-lac-trailer-slide
One of the films that’s been stirring up a fair amount of interest at Cannes is L’Inconnu du lac (Stranger by the Lake). Screening in the ‘Un Certain Regard’ segment of the festival, Alain Guiraudie’s film is a mix of very explicit sex, nihilistic thriller and arthouse drama. Reports suggest it got an extremely positive reaction at screenings, even though many have admitted its hardcore scenes will make it difficult to distribute.

The short synopsis from the Cannes website simply says, ‘Summertime. A cruising spot for men, tucked away on the shores of a lake. Franck falls in love with Michel. An attractive, potent and lethally dangerous man. Franck knows this, but wants to live out his passion anyway.’ That hints at the plot, which involves Franck witnessing Michel killing someone but telling nobody. He continues to pursue Michel, who holds him at arms length.

Take a look at a teaser for the film above (which you won’t be surprised to hear doesn’t feature any hardcore sexy, although it is a bit sexy). Hopefully its Cannes success will ensure this ‘porn noir’ gets better distribution than it might otherwise have had. [Read more…]

Jonathan Groff & Denis O’Hare Starrer C.O.G. To Open Outfest

May 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

cog-outfest
The opening night film of this year’s LA Outfest has been announced, with C.O.G. getting the honour when the world’s leading LGBT film festival kicks off on July 11.

The movie stars out actors Jonathan Groff and Denis O’Hare, alongside Corey Stoll, Dean Stockwell, Casey Wilson and Troian Bellisario. Directed by 29-year-old Kyle Patrick Alvarez and based on the writings of David Sedaris, C.O.G. (which stand for Children Of God) follows recent college graduate David (Groff), who decides to get close to nature, and the working class, by spending a summer picking apples in Oregon with his friend Jennifer.

Even after she blows him off, he charges ahead on a picaresque journey that takes him from orchard to processing plant to an arts and crafts workshop, guided along the way by an increasingly eccentric and motley bunch of mentors. Whether trying to interpret the possible flirtations of co-worker Curly (Stoll) or resisting the religious hard-sell from Bible-thumping Jon (O’Hare), David finds himself on the most complicated path of all — figuring out who he is and what he wants.

Outfest has also revealed it’s going to hand its 17th annual Achievement Award to writer/director Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don’t Cry, Stop-Loss, Carrie). The Achievement Award is Outfest’s highest honour and is presented in recognition of a body of work that has made a significant contribution to LGBT film and media.

It will be given to Pierce at the Outfest Opening Night Gala at The Orpheum, Los Angeles. The rest of the Outfest programme will be revealed in June.

Love Or Whatever Teaser Trailer – Getting over an ex isn’t easy whether you’re gay or straight

May 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Love Or Whatever is busy doing the film festival rounds at the moment, and will be released on DVD by TLA in the US later this year. But you can take a look at the teaser for the movie above.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Corey is a good-hearted therapist who loves helping his sweet, eccentric clients find happiness. After two years in a relationship with carefree jock Jon, Corey decides it’s time to pop the question. Obsessed with planning the “perfect moment”, though, Corey lets chance after chance slip by, until his feisty sister Kelsey gives him an ultimatum: ask him tonight or I’ll do it for you! Corey agrees to take the leap. But when the proposal night arrives, Jon prematurely discovers the rings. Suddenly face-to-face with a big commitment, Jon is overwhelmed by fear and doubt, and rushes out to the bar to drown his worries with friends.

‘There he meets Melissa, an attractive, recently-divorced older woman looking to make a new start of her own. Drawn together by electric attraction and mutual need, they share a night of passion that leads to something more. When Jon confesses his infidelity to Corey, their split sends Corey into a tailspin. And Corey’s in for a bigger shock when he discovers that Jon’s new girlfriend Melissa is one of Corey’s biggest clients! Corey struggles to come to terms with the breakup and understand Jon’s actions, and though he knows better, Corey just can’t resist getting the dirt on his ex’s new relationship through his counseling sessions with Melissa.

‘Finally, guided (and gently pushed) by Kelsey, Corey puts himself back out there, navigating the wild world of web dating with hilariously disastrous results. But when Corey discovers the mobile social networking app Grindr, he finds the potential man of his dreams has been there all along—Pete, a poet, scholar, neighborhood pizza guy, and all around hunk. Corey had no idea Pete was gay, and better yet, single! Their friendship sparks a ‘bromance’ that soon blossoms into a romance. As their relationship grows, Corey struggles with his unresolved feelings for Jon—who, despite his relationship with Melissa, never seems too far from Corey’s door.

‘As Pete struggles with a family illness and Kelsey fights to save her beloved neighborhood coffee bar, Corey neglects them and starts to yearn for what he’s lost. Unexpectedly alone and vulnerable on the night of his 30th birthday, Corey finds bad-boy Jon at his doorstep looking for a second chance, and their unfinished business takes a passionate turn. But moments later, the different pieces of Corey’s life collide with explosive results, as Pete, Melissa and Kelsey discover the truth about Corey and Jon—and Corey must face the truth about himself. Alone for the first time in his life, with his boyfriend gone, his sister’s livelihood in peril and his career hanging by a thread, Corey has to make a choice: to rekindle the past with Jon or to start over and fight for Kelsey, his career, and a last chance at love with Pete. Can Corey face the fear, overcome his obsession with planning and perfection and embrace the crazy, scary, unpredictable, adventurous future as it comes? In Love Or Whatever, it all comes down to a wild finish—and a choice that will change Corey’s life forever.’ [Read more…]

Zachary Quinto Says Equal Marriage Is An ‘Unstoppable Wave’ In The US

May 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Zachary QuintoZachary Quinto must he very tired. He’s been circling the globe to support the release of Star Trek Into Darkness, and one of his final stops was a Washington DC screening of the movie. He spoke to Huffington Post on the red carpet, and had a few things to say about the gay rights gains being made in American at the moment (in the last two weeks, three more states have legalised gay marriage).

“You can see now we have 13 states in the union that have adopted marriage equality,” he said, “And that’s an unstoppable wave as far as I’m concerned. Whether it comes from the federal government or all 50 states just find their way to it, I feel like it’s only a matter of time at this point.”

He also notes the importance of President Obama’s support, saying, “Being the first sitting president in the history of the United States to acknowledge his support for marriage equality is a huge step and is not to be underestimated. I think we have a lot more work to do, but I think everybody’s unified behind the cause.”

Quinto also reiterates how happy he is to have come out, saying, “I feel incredibly proud of the position that I’m in — I arrived here on my own time and on my own terms and made some very personal decisions along the way,’ he said. ‘I don’t feel limited in any way by acknowledging who I am. I feel like I can live an authentic life and do more authentic work now as a result of now.”

Daniel Radcliffe Got ‘Step-By-Step’ Gay Sex Instructions For Kill Your Darlings

May 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

kill-your-darlings-daniel-radcliffe-dane-dehaan
Poor Daniel Radcliffe, it appears gay sex doesn’t come naturally to him, but at least he’s had some instruction! The former boy wizard plays gay poet Allan Ginsberg in the upcoming movie Kill Your Darlings, which involved shooting some hot and steamy man-on-man action.

Now the actor has been talking to Graham Norton on his chat show, saying he needed a few pointers on his gay sex skills. “I was doing a gay sex scene,” says Radcliffe, “And the director was giving step-by-step instructions. And the favourite note I have ever had was when we were kissing and the director shouted, ‘Not like that. Crazy sex kissing!’”

Kill Your Darlings follows the likes Ginsberg, William Burroughs and Jack Kerouac, who first met as young men in the 1940s, before they went on to shake up the literary world. The film revolves around a real murder that’s said to have shaped these young men and their outlook on the world.

The film also stars the likes of Dane Dehaan, Jack Huston, Ben Foster and Michael C. Hall.
