Community’s Joel McHale Doesn’t Mind If You Say He’s Gay

April 19, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Joel-Mchale-shirtlessJoel McHale has gained a lot of gay fans around the globe thanks to Community, and as with pretty much every good-looking male celeb who looks after their body (and boy does he look after his body), he’s had rumours about his sexuality floating around for years. Now he’s been talking to The Advocate about it, and has revealed he really doesn’t care.

”I always find it really weird when guys flip out over someone thinking they might be gay,” he says. “If a guy gets offended by that, there’s something wrong with him. I take it as a compliment.”

He adds, “As long as the comments about my body are positive, I don’t mind.”

McHale’s very happy about all the support his comedy show has had from gay fans, saying “Community needs all the help it can get, so thank God for our gay fans. Our young gay fans especially are the loudest and most Internet-savvy. That also speaks to the quality of our show, which I think is highly intelligent.”

As well as Community, McHale presented the TV series The Soup, and has popped up in movies such as Spider-man 2, Ted, and What’s Your Number?.

The actor also tells a story about a situation where he ended up in a gay bar as a young man, waiting for a friend, when he realised that the men around him were starting to come onto him. So what’s his advice for a straight man to deal with this situation? “Just a very quick, courteous blowjob.”

Firefly’s Sean Maher & Actress Traci Lords Join Eastsiders LGBT Web Series

April 19, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A couple of weeks ago we reported that the US LGBT-focussed TV network, Logo, had picked up the web series Eastsiders, premièring the first three of the nine episodes of the first season on Tuesday, April 23rd at 4pm ET on LogoTV.com. The first episode actually showed up on Youtube before Christmas (it’s since been removed), which led to a successful Kickstarter campaign and the Logo pick-up.

Now a couple of new guest stars have been announced. Gay Icon Traci Lords (Zack and Miri Make a Porno) will pop up in Episode 4 as Cal’s outspoken mother Val, while sexy out gay actor Sean Maher (Firefly, The Playboy Club) has a recurring role as Paul, a handsome gallery owner.

The series follows Cal (Kit Williamson), who finds out Thom (soap star Van Hansis) has been cheating on him with Jeremy (Matthew McKelligon), which turns their relationship upside down. Cal’s best friend Kathy (Constance Wu) is always there for him with a bottle of whiskey in her purse, but she has her own problems with her nice guy boyfriend Ian (John Halbach), even if they’re all in her head. Will the lies tear them apart or are they just stubborn enough to stay together forever?  Drunken outbursts and double standards abound in this dark comedy about the sad and funny messes we make out of our lives.

Other guest stars include Brea Grant (Heroes, Dexter), Stephen Guarino (Logo’s The Big Gay Sketch Show) and David Blue (Stargate Universe, Ugly Betty). As well as playing Cal, Kit Williamson also writes and directs Eastsiders.

Jackie Chan & Other Celebs Come Out For Equality In Brett Ratner Directed PSAs

April 19, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Brett Ratner has to step down from producing the Oscars after using the word ‘fag’ during a Q&A. Since then he’s been busy ‘rehabilitating’ himself, which has included teaming up with GLAAD to create a series of PSAs that feature various celebrities coming out of the closet as allies for equality.

Videos featuring the likes of Jackie Chan, Jason Alexander, NCIS’ Pauley Perrette, Hart Of Dixie’s Jaime King, and 3rd Rock’s Kristen Johnson, have been released, featuring the celebs in and around a literal closet.

You can take a look at some of the vids above and below.

GLAAD has revealed that, “Comcast and NBCUniversal will serve as a leading media partner for the PSA campaign, contributing $1.5 million in national airtime on its Xfinity TV cable systems and bringing this important message to more than 20 million homes over the next year.”

Dustin Lance Black Handed UCLA Screenwriting Award

April 19, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

dustin-lance-blackOpenly gay Milk writer, Dustin Lance Black, has been announced as the recipient of the un-snappily titled Lew and Pamela Hunter/Jonathan and Janice Zakin chair holder in screenwriting Award, which is given by top film school UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television.

The writer and activist will receive the honour on April 30th at UCLA’s James Bridges Theater. It required him to have taught a 10-week course in screenwriting, which he completed at the school last autumn.

Black won an Oscar for writing Milk, and is also behind the screenplays for J. Edgar and the upcoming remake of Earthquake. He won a WGA Award for his work on the TV series Big Love (his Mormon background obviously helped him with the TV series). He’s also been very active in the fight for marriage equality, including writing the play 8, about the fight against a measure that sought the ban same sex marriage in California, which got a star-studded reading last year and may become a movie.

It’s a bit of a homecoming for the writer, as he attended UCLA and graduated from the School of Theater, Film and Television in 1996. (Source: Variety)

Sequel To Gay Mormon Movie The Falls Seeks Funding

April 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

One of the better LGBT-themed films of the last couple of years was The Falls, about two young Mormon missionaries who have a major crisis of faith when they start to fall for one another, something they know could result in them being thrown out of their religion.

Now a sequel is in the works, called The Falls: A Testament of Love, which is currently looking for funding on Kickstarter. The movie is hoping for at least $10,000, which should allow them to get the movie shot (the first one was filmed for around 7k), with filming due to kick off on May 15th.

Director Jon Garcia says on the Kickstarter, ‘When The Falls was picked up for distribution and then released in December 2012,  I began to speak with members of Affirmation and other LGBT organizations to discover the coming out stories of many who have had experiences like RJ and Chris in The Falls. Eventually the story for The Falls: A Testament Of Love, was formed from the hearts and minds of those who experienced it.  The challenges our lead characters face resonate some unified truths about the experiences of individuals who have felt opposition from their community and faith because of who they are.’

The sequel is set five years after RJ Smith (Nick Ferruci) and Chris Merrill’s (Benjamin Farmer) mission in Clackamas Falls, Oregon. When an unexpected event occurs, the two young men find themselves once again thrust into one another’s lives. As old feelings begin to surface they once again face difficult choices. While fulfilling their desire to be together, RJ and Chris risk hurting the ones they care about as they embark on a spiritual journey to discover love, freedom and most of all, happiness.

Head over to Kickstarter to find out more, and you can read our review of the first movie, The Falls, here. [Read more…]

Official Cannes Line-up Revealed, With A Bit Of Gay Interest

April 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Cannes-2013-PosterThe official line-up for the 2013 Cannes Film Festival has been revealed, with an interesting set of movies screening from May 15th to 26th. We already knew the festival would open with Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby and that Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring would kick off the Un Certain Regard segment, but now the other movies have been announced.

The main competition includes the Coen Brothers’ Inside Llewyn Davis, Takashi Miike’s Shield Of Straw, Alexander Payne’s Nebraska, and Nicolas Winding Refn’s Only God Forgives.

Interestingly Steven Soberbergh’s very gay Liberace biopic Behind The Candelabra, starring Michael Douglas and Matt Damon, has been chosen. While Soderbergh is a Cannes veteran, having won the Palme d’Or for Sex, Lies & Videotapes, Behind The Candelabra was made to be shown on American TV, rather than getting a cinema release (although it will be coming to cinemas in other parts of the world), which you might have expected to cause Cannes to ignore it.

Movies from Roman Polanksi, James Gray and gay director Francois Ozon are also in competition, while out of competition there’s J.C. Chandor’s All Is Lost, starring Robert Redford, and Blood Ties by Guillaume Canet.

Atomic Age (L’âge atomique) Trailer – Clubbing and sexuality for young Parisians

April 17, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The trailer for Atomic Age above doesn’t exactly tell us a huge amount about the film, other than there’ll be some nightclubbing and one of the guys wants to be a sailor. Actually that’s not quite fair, as there’s plenty of info in there, but it only really works if you know what the film is about.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A rare exploration of the underlying sexual tension between two close male friends, Atomic Age charts the evolution of burgeoning youthful sexuality over the course of one night in Paris.

‘Victor and Rainer are typical young French hipsters on their way to Paris, swigging Red Bull, bantering about the Stone Roses, and musing about what awaits them. Checking into a club, Victor hits on the girls, while Rainer spikily rebuffs the advances of a male admirer. Testosterone surges, bravado leads to a face-off…just another night on the town. Until it’s not. This stunningly shot character study perfectly captures what it’s like to be young men, fumbling their way through a sexual awakening, whilst negotiating the delicate bonds of friendship.’

The film hits DVD in both the UK and US this May.

The Visitor (Cibrâil) Trailer – Gay desire erupts when a house guest arrives

April 17, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Falling for a house guest is a recipe for major trouble, but that’s what happens in The Visitor, which is due on DVD in the UK in May.

Cibrâil, a young policeman, lives happily with his art-dealer girlfriend in Berlin. Everything seems fine, money is not a problem, and Cibrâil is well integrated into German society, despite his Turkish origins. What is the reason for his sleepless nights? A gay cousin of his girlfriend who lives permanently in Rome, comes to visit them but that does not seem to disturb their relationship, or at least on the surface.

The guest is friendly, free and enjoys being on his own. He wanders around in town and takes pictures. He has also has some love affairs. Cibrâil gets close to him, almost unwittingly: they jog, go for a stroll and confide their secrets to each other. But sometimes attraction can be fatal.

Gay Producers Craig Zadan & Neil Meron Rehired For The Oscars

April 17, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

craig-zadan-neil-meronThere may have been a bit of controversy over the Oscars, with some saying host Seth MacFarlane was sexist, mean, or in bad taste, but the Academy obviously didn’t mind too much, as they’ve rehired the men behind the telecast, openly gay producers Craig Zadan & Neil Meron, to come up with the next one.

It was their idea to hire MacFarlane, and while some may not have liked him, the viewing figures show he was a good choice. 40.3 million people watched in the US, which is the best total in three years. The show also showed an an 11% gain in the advertiser beloved 18-49 demographic compared with 2012. For several years the Academy has been trying to boost the Oscars’ attraction to younger viewers, but has had decidedly mixed success. However the 2013 show worked on that score, and it would appear this is one of the things that’s made them decide to go back to Meron and Zadan.

The producers have always seemed a good choice for the Oscars job, as they have experience in film, having produced movies like Hairspray and Chicago, as well as putting on Broadway shows such as the successful restaging of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. It’s a mix of behind-the-scenes stage and screen experience that not many people have.

Apparently in response to the slight controversy over this year’s ceremony, Academy president Hawk Koch issued a statement saying, “Craig and Neil have the overwhelming support of the Academy’s Governors to produce the Oscars again in 2014. In order to establish continuity with this year’s enormously successful show, we felt it was important to give these consummate professionals the green light now to begin creating another great evening.”

Meron and Zadan commented, “We are very honored to have been asked to return as Oscar producers for a second year. We look forward to creating a distinctive and entertaining show.”

It’s unlikely MacFarlane will be back though, as he ruled himself out shortly after this year’s telecast. However Ricky Gervais said the same thing after his first Golden Globes gig, but he came back. The 2014 ceremony will take place on March 2nd, slightly later than this year, so that it doesn’t clash with the Winter Olympics.
