Jobriath A.D. Trailer – A gay rock ‘n’ roll star before his time

September 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

I have to admit I’d never heard of Jobriath, but perhaps that’s not that surprising. He was a flash in the pan before my birth, but as the new documentary Jobriath A.D. attempts to show, he was a very important and groundbreaking flash in terms of LGBT history.

Jobriath, born Bruce Wayne Campbell, was the first openly gay artist ever signed to a major record label, which almost amazingly happened back in 1972, when David Geffen (who is himself gay) signed him for the then astronomical $500,000. While he was given huge publicity and his debut album garnered generally positive reviews, the public wasn’t ready for a flamboyant star who actually admitted he was gay. The disc bombed amidst a hard backlash.

As many have commented, he was not the first camp, flamboyant, glam, seemingly ‘gay’ artist – it was, after all, a time when Bowie and Queen rode high in the charts – but actually saying the word publicly made a big difference at the time. Not long afterwards Jobriath’s music career was over, although he left a lasting legacy for acts that came after him, such as Soft Cell, Morrissey and Culture Club.

Tragically he became one of first celebrities to die of AIDS in 1983. Take a look at the trailer for what seems like it’ll be a fascinating documentary above, and find out more at the film’s website.

The Philippines Picks Gay-Themed Movie Bwakaw As Its Oscar Choice

September 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While many Asian nations have a patchy record on gay rights, there have been great strides in recent years in The Philippines. Although gay people still face persecution in that nation, things have certainly been moving in the right direction, to the point where the gay-themed film Bwakaw has been picked as The Philippines official entry for the Best Foreign Language Oscar.

It’s particularly good news, as historically there’s been a pattern of countries ignoring LGBT themed movie as their nomination, in favour of potentially less forward-thinking movie. In case you were wondering, the Best Foreign Language Oscar isn’t culled from all non-English movies released that year. Instead a committee in each nation is allowed to put forward a single movie that will be considered for the award.

Bwakaw stars popular Filipino actor Eddie Garcia as Rene, an ill-tempered, lonely 75-year-old gay man with a sensitive side, who only came out when he was 60. He spends much of his solitary existence talking to his dog, Bwakaw, and then decides to visit a former female flame at a nursing home, as well as hanging out with a gay couple who run a hair salon.

Filmmaker Jun Robles Lana, 40, spoke to the Wall Street Journal, telling them the film had the odds stacked against it, as ‘Gay stories don’t sell in the Philippines. And it’s a movie about growing old.’ Despite that, it’s found success on the festival circuit and healthy box office in its home country, partly because it uses humour to ‘break the silences’, says Lana, as he ‘didn’t want the film to be bleak’.

It’s still got a long way to go until it wins the Oscar, but it’s great that Bwakaw is in the race.

George Clooney Auctioning Off A Date For LGBT Youth Charity

September 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

George Clooney has never been afraid to speak out and support causes he believes in, even if that hasn’t always made him popular with right wing fanatics, or indeed homophobes. He’s often spoken out for gay causes and has been a huge supporter of initiatives to get equal marriage recognised in the US.

Now he’s stepped forward once again, auctioning off a date (well, a lunch, anyway) to raise funds for the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN). That’s right, you can take you and a friend for a meal at LA’s Soho House restaurant, with Clooney and entertainment journalist Dave Karger, and support and excellent LGBT cause at the same time. However you’ll need plenty of cash, as the lunch is valued at $20,000, and already has bids up to $6,500. However if you have massive wads of cash burning holes in your pockets, the CharityBuzz auction remains open until October 11th, so there’s plenty of time to bid.

There are plenty of other lots to bid on, such as an audition for a role on the TV show American Horror Story, tickets to movie premieres (along with meet and greets with the stars), visits to the sets of Modern Family or NCIS: LA, and a walk-on role in True Blood.

If you’d like to know more about GLSEN, here’s their mission statement: ‘The Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network strives to assure that each member of every school community is valued and respected regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression.

‘We believe that such an atmosphere engenders a positive sense of self, which is the basis of educational achievement and personal growth. Since homophobia and heterosexism undermine a healthy school climate, we work to educate teachers, students and the public at large about the damaging effects these forces have on youth and adults alike. We recognize that forces such as racism and sexism have similarly adverse impacts on communities and we support schools in seeking to redress all such inequities.

‘GLSEN seeks to develop school climates where difference is valued for the positive contribution it makes in creating a more vibrant and diverse community. We welcome any and all individuals as members, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity/expression or occupation, who are committed to seeing this philosophy realized in K-12 schools.’

The auction is open until October 11th, so get bidding.

The First LGBT-Themed 3D Film Gets A Festival Screening

September 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While 3D has taken over the world of blockbusters, animation and horror movies, LGBT-themed film has yet to take advantage of the third dimension, largely because of a lack of distribution outlets to take advantage of it and the cost. However, the short film Leviticus 20:13 has decided to go 3D anyway, and The Advocate reports it will screen this Saturday as part of the inaugural Out in 3D film program, part of the 3D Film Festival, at LA’s Regal Cinemas.

We can’t find too much info on what the short, by Christopher Cresitelli, is about, but according to the 3DFF website,’The film carries a powerful message about tolerance and deals with extremely sensitive subject matter’. The title refers to the infamous biblical passage, ‘If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.’

The festival is now running, and so if you’re in LA, it may well be worth heading over to the Regal Cinemas for the 7pm Out In 3D program this Saturday.

Rupert Everett Defends Gay Parenting Comments

September 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Rupert Everett caused a minor upset a few days ago over comments he made about families with two fathers. The gay celeb told the Sunday Times, “[My mother] still wishes I had a wife and kids. She thinks children need a father and a mother and I agree with her. I can’t think of anything worse than being brought up by two gay dads. Some people might not agree with that. Fine! That’s just my opinion. I’m not speaking on behalf of the gay community. In fact, I don’t feel like I’m part of any ‘community.’ The only community I belong to is humanity and we’ve got too many children on the planet, so it’s good not to have more.”

Now he’s been defending those comments. When asked about them during an appearance on This Morning, he said, “The good news on this is I’m not applying for any sort of public office. I don’t want to be a (Member of Parliament), I don’t want to be in a council, I don’t want to be the head of (actors’ union) Equity. I’m just an individual with my own life and the things I want to do myself.

“I’m not against anybody doing anything… I’m not one of those people who wants to say, ‘Oh no, you can’t do that, you have got to pull the clocks back.’ Just I, personally, feel like that… I have loads of friends, gay friends, with children… I am not big into marriage, straight or gay, to be honest. I am very out of kilter with the rest of the world, I realise.”

Everett has long had a history of saying what he thinks, which has sometimes gotten him into trouble. Indeed, while he’s said before he feels that coming out stymied his Hollywood career, the fact he’s a bit of a livewire is just as likely to be the reason tinsel town has always been a little wary of him.

Clint Eastwood Says US Republicans Should Stop ‘Worrying What Gay Marriage Is About’

September 19, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Clint Eastwood’s appearance the the Republican Convention caused a lot of comment, mainly due to the fact he kept haranguing an empty chair as if President Obama was sat in it. However while he may not be impressed with the President’s economic performance, he’s socially far more liberal than many other Republicans and does believe in marriage equality.

While out promoting his new film, Trouble With the Curve, he stopped by Ellen’s talk show and touched on how he is a Republican but identifies with libertarian values. He says, “You’re socially liberal, leave everybody alone, but you believe in fiscal responsibility and you believe in government staying out of your life. With the condition of society right now, with the high unemployment rates and the tremendous debt we’re increasing and the government spending, you think there’d be a lot to think about, except worrying what gay marriage is about.”

He also mentioned the whole thing with the chair, saying “The Democrats who were watching said they thought I was going senile, and the Republicans knew I was.”

You can see what Eastwood had to say below.

Keep The Lights On UK Trailer – Take a fresh look at the much admired gay drama

September 19, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Keep The Lights On is undoubtedly the most buzzed about LGBT-interest title of the year (we’ve seen it and will be letting you know what we think soon), and will begins its UK roll-out soon with screenings at the London Film Festival, ahead of release on November 2nd. Now the film’s distributors, Peccadillo Pictures, have released a brand new UK trailer for the movie, so you can get a feel for the film.

Homeboy Trailer – Being gay inside a Latino gang

September 18, 2012 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Some of the most interesting LGBT documentaries are about being queer in worlds that most of us know little about, whether that’s in a distant country with a very different culture, or still in the Western world, but in a subculture many people won’t have come into contact with. The latter certainly fits Dino Dinco’s Homeboy, a documentary about being gay and part of the LA gang world.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Homeboy examines the lives of several gay Latino men living in and around the Los Angeles area who are either former gang members or who are currently active in gangs. These men range in age from their early-20’s to their mid-40’s, most of whom entered gangs while in their early teenage years. This is a story of their individual journeys. Through a series of interviews, Homeboy aims to provide a voice for a unique intersection of cultures until now previously unheard: contemporary Latino culture, gay culture and the world of gangs. These personal accounts weave together, illuminating both parallels and differences amongst the subjects’ experiences. We explore the transformation that these men have undergone, from membership within a gang – a world that is hyper-masculine and outwardly heterosexual – to the acceptance of being gay and how their lives have evolved.’

It’s not clear when the movie might get a release, but the trailer certainly makes it look intriguing.

See Daniel Radcliffe Talk About Teen Suicide For The Trevor Project

September 18, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

On Friday we reported that Daniel Radcliffe was going to help host an online talk on behalf of The Trevor Project’s Talk To Me campaign. Now that chat has happened and it’s online, so we can see what Radcliffe and others have to say about the subject and the charity that Dan has been involved with for several years.

The Trevor Project is the leading US organisation providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning youth. The chat was timed to coincide with National Suicide Prevention Month, with Radcliffe using the chat to help look at ways of trying to prevent suicide and make life better for LGBT people, particularly young people in crisis. The Talk To Me campaign according to its website, ‘is The Trevor Project’s campaign for conversation. With 3 simple words – talk to me – you let a friend know that you CARE about them and are willing to listen without judgment. During National Suicide Prevention Month in September we encourage you to take the Talk to Me pledge and let the ones you love know you’re always available to talk.’

You can watch the chat above.
