Steam Room Stories – Is it better to be smooth or hairy in the latest episode?

July 4, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

steam-room-stories-hairy-or-smoothWe don’t post as many episodes of Steam Room Stories as perhaps we ought to. It is, after all, one of the longest running gay-themed web series out there, so certainly has a place of this site.

However we felt compelled to post this one as it takes on the greatest question facing gay men today – is it better to be smooth and shaved or hairy and furry? Okay, that’s not the greatest question, but in the past couple of years we’ve certainly seen a shift in gay culture from expectations of almost total hairlessness (especially in porn), to a far greater variety of facial and body hair.

But which is better? Well, two guys in the Steam Room are keen to find out, and recruit another guy to rate them. Take a look at the new episode below. [Read more…]

Gay Short Film Showcase: The Beginning – A young man comes out to his father before prom

July 4, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

the-beginningQuite often the short films we post highlight the negative aspects of LGBT life. While that is vitally important, it’s also nice to sometimes have one that’s just rather sweet. That’s certainly true of The Beginning.

In the film, a father is sorting a boutonniere for his ‘ladykiller’ son, Davis, to wear to prom. However, Davis is pretty nervous because he’s got something to tell his dad – his prom date isn’t a woman, it’s a guy. How does the Dad react? Well, the fact this was made for Hallmark should give you a clue.

The short was written by Steven Tagle and directed by Melanie McGraw to help promote Feeln, Hallmark’s feelgood streaming service (available in the US). If you know a short film we ought to be posting, tell us by getting in touch via our contact page. Brexit Causes Lesbian Web Series Different For Girls To Be Put On Hold

July 3, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Different-for-girls-book-coverEver since Britain voted to leave the EU, there’s been a lot of talk about the possible effects, not least for the entertainment industry and investment in film, TV and web projects in the UK. Now it seems one of its first casualties is the lesbian-themed web series, Different For Girls.

Pink News reports that plans to make the series – based on Jacquie Lawrence’s novel – have been put on hold. The reason is that due to the uncertainty surrounding the UK economy following Brexit, much of the funding for the series has been pulled.

While the show had done a successful crowdfunding campaign, that was only due to cover 25% of the costs, with the rest coming from more traditional routes. However, the money has now been pulled, leaving Different For Girls in limbo, and forced to abandon its plans to shoot next month.

The show was due to follow a group of lesbian and bisexual women in West London, with Sophie Ward (Heartbeat), Rachel Shelley (The L Word), and Heather Peace (Lip Service, Waterloo Road) set to star. It hoped to be an antidote to TV’s tendency to ignore realistic lesbian stories, and also to kill off LGBT characters, particularly as numerous lesbian characters have met their maker in 2016.

Hopefully the series will find new funding, but for now Brexit means we will have to wait.

Gay Short Film Showcase: Por Un Beso – Powerful Spanish short looks at the violence of homophobia

July 3, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

por-un-besoIn the last few years many countries have enacted new rights for LGBT people, but it’s certainly not a battle we’ve won, especially in terms preventing fringes of society from hating anyone who isn’t straight. Many people in same sex couples will know the trepidation that can accompany public displays of affection, not knowing if you’re going to get harassed or beaten up.

The Spanish short Por Un Beso takes a powerful look at this, following two men in Madrid who meet and fall in love. However, the openness with which they share their happiness ultimately has tragic consequences.

It pack a lot into only a few minutes, making its point with great power. If you know a short film we ought to be posting, tell us by getting in touch via our contact page. And check out more gay short films and web series here. [Read more…]

Wonderkid Trailer – Take a look at the short film tackling homophobia in soccer

June 30, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

wonderkid-slideWonderkid got a big boost during its crowdfunding campaign last October when Ian McKellen stepped up to support the film, helping ensure it reached its targets. Now the trailer for the short film has arrived, which you can take a look at below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘WONDERKID a film by Rhys Chapman, which tackles one of football’s biggest issues – homophobia. Starring Chris Mason, the film depicts the inner turmoil of a gay professional footballer. The film is part of a nationwide campaign to raise awareness about the lack of openly gay professionals in the sport.’

Chapman comments, “With everything going on in the world currently this is a really important time for sexuality and gender issues. We have created an inspiring character who knows he is gay, accepts he is gay and wants to come out, but it is his profession that is holding him back.

“If enough people see this film, it can make a huge difference in football. Anyone that watches this film will understand that everyone deserves to live their life free from fear. They will see that it is a simple solution and all that is required to make footballers feel safe enough to come out is the acceptance of the general public and it is down to us to send the message.”

Wonderkid will premiere at the Leicester Square Odeon in August before getting an online release later this year. [Read more…]
